Best Digital Nomad Jobs in Tech

1. Programmer

Description: Programmers write computing code for various things, the most popular being software, websites and apps. They speak one or more of the many computer languages needed to communicate with a digital interface.

Job Requirements:

  • Knowledge of programming software and applications
  • Proficiency in computer languages (like HTML, CSS and JavaScript)
  • Knowledge of data management and system design
  • Usually requires a Bachelor’s degree in computer programming (or something similar)

In my experience, most of the digital nomads I encounter are programmers.

A huge perk is that the job can be performed independently and offline. This means the programmer can still perform their work without a stable internet connection.

And trust me, if you travel to certain parts of Asia and Africa, you’ll face an unstable internet connection!

2. Website Developer

Description: Web developers build, maintain and fix websites. They either work with computer code or through a more intuitive content management system like WordPress.

Job Requirements:

  • Basic to advanced knowledge of coding language
  • Portfolio of web design and development projects
  • Skill in artistic design
  • Sometimes requires a Bachelor’s degree in computer programming (or something similar)

Website developers can be specific types of programmers. Or digital artists who only need to know the basics of a coding language.

They create and build the style, layout, look and various functions of a website. They also take care of any bugs that make a site slow, unstable or unusable in some way.

3. App Developer

Description: App developers build the layout, functions and features of an application. They test it, analyze its flaws and fix any bugs that could hamper its usability.

Job Requirements:

  • Knowledge of programming languages like ORACLE and JavaScript
  • Knowledge of software development and design
  • Basic programming knowledge
  • Sometimes requires a Bachelor’s degree in computer programming (or something similar)

The work of an app developer is similar to that of a website developer. But because the coding styles and languages are different, the skill sets needed are also different.

Maybe you’ll become inspired by your travels and create an innovative app for fellow nomads!

4. SEO Specialist

Description: SEO Specialists help a website stand out in a highly competitive search engine, such as Google. They highlight certain areas where the website fails to attract a search engine’s attention and guide brands on improving it.

Job Requirements:

  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of SEO techniques
  • Understanding of search engine algorithms (like Google)
  • Storng digital marketing skills

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization.

It’s relatively easy to learn but difficult to master. As more and more people understand the importance of SEO, getting a website to rank highly in a search engine’s results is becoming harder with only basic SEO knowledge.

That’s why truly skilled SEO experts are highly valuable in today’s digital environment.

5. Social Media Marketer

Description: A social media marketer helps create and maintain a brand’s public face. They schedule social media posts, run contests on social platforms and respond to comments, concerns and queries on a brand’s social networks.

Job Requirements:

  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of social media platforms’ algorithms (i.e., Instagram, Facebook, etc.)
  • Strong digital marketing skills
  • Creativity and innovation
  • Content management skills
  • Familiarity with tools like Canva, content scheduler apps, etc.

6. Affiliate Marketer

Description: Affiliate marketers refer customers to a product or a service and earn a commission every time a sale is made. They’re usually bloggers, social media influencers, YouTubers, etc.

Job Requirements:

  • Some type of online platform or presence (i.e., a blog, social media account, YouTube channel, etc.)
  • Consistently-published content
  • Some knowledge of digital marketing

7. Digital Entrepreneur

Description: Business owners who create and sell products online, including physical products, digital products, courses, etc. They also might sell products on sites like Amazon and eBay.

Job Requirements:

  • Decent knowledge of managing a website
  • A product or service to sell
  • Knowledge of digital marketing as an e-commerce brand
  • Ability to analyze a product’s profitability, profit margins, sales performance, etc.

Other than programmers, most digital nomads I meet are digital entrepreneurs.

Often, digital entrepreneurs build and develop an online business just to the point where they can sell it. Then they do the same thing with another online business.

In this way, they make money by selling their creations the same way an artist would sell a piece of artwork.

Best Digital Nomad Jobs in Support

8. Customer Support Representative

Description: A customer support representative answers phone calls from a company’s customers to answer their questions and solve their problems regarding their purchases.

Job Requirements:

  • Excellent communication skills
  • Good with making and answering phone calls
  • Familiarity with software services like CRM (Customer Relationship Management) technology

9. Technical Support Representative

Description: A tech support rep offers specific and detailed troubleshooting advice when problems arise. They’re often hired directly by a company that needs to manage and support their internal IT systems.

Job Requirements:

  • Customer service and interpersonal skills
  • Good with making and answering phone calls
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Familiarity with computer systems, software and hardware

Because these technicians have such specialized knowledge, they don’t deal with people as often as customer support representatives.

This makes them a bit like programmers, but they exist in a support role instead of a creation role.

Technical support reps can serve a lot of different functions. They might offer general IT-based support for a company or maintain a large communication network across various locations within a multinational corporation.

Best Digital Nomad Jobs in Education

  • Ability to motivate and encourage students
  • Fluency in the teaching language

There are many sites you can use to start teaching a language online, such as:

11. Various Skills Teacher

Description: Someone who teaches any other subject online through live lessons, an online course, book, etc.

Job Requirements:

  • Thorough knowledge in the subject you’re going to teach
  • Understanding of how to self-publish and/or self-promote your teaching service or course/material
  • Ability to interact with students/customers and answer questions

If you have a unique set of skills, you can create your own online class and sell it to people. Your course can contain an e-book, curriculum or videos of you explaining the subject.

This is a great way to earn money, because you usually only have to create the content once. Then collect residuals when people buy the course.

12. Writer

Description: A digital writer creates written content like blog posts, e-books, sales copy, social media copy and more. Usually, they know SEO and are hired to improve the conversion rates and performance of websites or landing pages.

Job Requirements:

  • Strong writing and grammar skills
  • Ability to persuade and engage an online audience through written content
  • Knowledge of SEO
  • Ability to work under deadlines

One great thing about traveling while writing is that much of the job can be performed offline. For instance, most of this post was written in a cafe with no internet. I only needed the internet when I was ready to submit it to the editor.

I’ve written many pieces on trains, in cars, while sitting on park benches and while relaxing on the beach.

13. Designer

Description: Digital designers create designs that represent a brand’s identity, like logos, social media ads, infographics, blog post graphics and more. But they can also create non-branded content like T-shirts and phone accessories.

Job Requirements:

  • Skilled in graphic design
  • Solid understanding of design programs like Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Canva, etc.
  • Ability to be creative under deadlines

Many print-on-demand companies let you upload your designs. When a customer buys a product with the design you created, you earn a commission on that sale.

One great thing about this field is that you don’t need any special qualifications to be a designer.

If you know how to use the basic functions of design software, you don’t need any other technical knowledge or degree to be hireable.

14. Video Creators

Description: People who create content on video-sharing platforms like YouTube and TikTok, or create videos for other social media platforms, like Facebook and Instagram reels. They can do this for their own brand or a company’s brand.

Job Requirements:

  • Entertaining and engaging personality
  • Familiarity with social media and video-sharing sites’ algorithms, like YouTube and TikTok
  • Basic knowledge of digital marketing
  • Ability to maintain a consistent publishing schedule

Video is dominating the online world, and the creators are raking in some seriously big bucks.

In 2023, the average viewer watches 17 hours of video content per week. On top of that, 91.8% of people on the internet watch videos weekly.

In fact, “YouTube millionaire” is one of the most sought-after tech jobs.

But video exists beyond YouTube. Many people turn to Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok and other media to market their video content and build their online brands.

15. Blogger

Description: Bloggers write content around a topic they’re passionate or knowledgeable about. They commonly make money with affiliate marketing, direct advertisements and sponsored posts. They also sell content like e-books, courses and seminars.

Job Requirements:

  • Strong writing and grammar skills
  • Ability to engage, entertain and educate an online audience through the content you create
  • Knowledge in SEO or similar form of digital marketing
  • Ability to maintain a consistent publishing schedule
  • Decent knowledge in website hosting sites like WordPress

While anyone can get a website and start putting content on it, it takes a truly talented, patient and persistent blogger to make it all come together.

That said, if you have an infectious passion for your niche and are a consistent content creator, you can turn a blog into a million dollar enterprise.

Who knows? Maybe you can even create a blog about your world travels!

Where to Find Digital Nomad Jobs

If you’re looking for work as a digital nomad, there are a few routes you can take.

First, you can ask your current employer if you can work remotely. If you recognize that your job exists solely on a computer, your job is likely capable of being done anywhere.

You can also send out a letter of inquiry along with your resume to a potential employer asking if they have location-independent positions available. I’ve personally acquired many jobs with this approach.

Finally, you can search job portals. For more stable, steady and contracted labor jobs, check out these job-hunting sites:

And if you want to work as a freelancer, here are some good sites to check out:
