6. Spanish Obsessed

Written in: English

Their posts explore many aspects of the language from basic, intermediate and advanced vocabulary and phrases to insightful articles about its structure and how best to go about learning the language.

Rob’s posts cover topics such as getting to grips with the subjunctive, memory tricks to help you learn, and a guide to ser and estar (Spanish language learners will know how tricky it is to master the two forms of the verb “to be”).

Liz’s posts are on anything and everything, such as vacations and following the peace process in Colombia.

Why Read Blogs in Spanish?

They give you access to structured and straightforward Spanish

Blog posts are purposely written in straightforward language, adhere to an organized structure and use simpler vocabulary.

So no matter your level, you can read posts without getting as lost as you might in a newspaper article.

To ease into it, you can start with blogs about learning Spanish since these usually feature a mix of Spanish and English.

You can pick up different varieties of Spanish

With blogs, you get access to many writers from different countries—and you can, little by little, start picking out the linguistic nuances specific to certain places.

Whether it’s slang, other vocabulary or sentence structure, you can learn a lot by seeing region-specific Spanish used consistently throughout a blogger’s posts.

This point won’t be as obvious or beneficial for beginners, but for advanced learners, this is a great opportunity for you to refine your Spanish further.

You can join a community of online Spanish speakers

Blog discussion boards and comments sections are teeming with opinions, information and (hopefully) peaceful back-and-forths.

If you’re a beginner, this is an excellent opportunity to read short tidbits of Spanish writing (just be aware that there may be incorrect grammar and spelling, of course).

And if you’re a more advanced learner, why not join the conversation? This will get you into regular, accessible Spanish interaction, which helps your vocabulary and writing skills immensely.

You can meet native speakers

Joining a Spanish-speaking blog community is a great opportunity to connect with native Spanish speakers.

In addition, blog authors are often avid travelers and organize meetups and get-togethers with their readers worldwide.

Some blogs even get so popular that local groups are created so readers can get together for social activities. This could be your way into a Spanish-speaking club based around your interests!

You can get consistent reading practice

To succeed in language learning, it’s important to keep your learning consistent.

Most good blogs publish at least one article weekly, so if you subscribe to the email list, you’ll have a new post in your inbox every week.

This reminds you that you need to read, and if you pick a blog on a topic that interests you, you’ll want to read!

You can learn vocabulary that’s relevant to you

If you love fashion, get into a fashion blog and you’ll quickly notice how quickly you begin picking up words from posts and the website itself.

This is great because you can then finally begin talking about things that really matter to you in Spanish.

If you like learning Spanish through blogs, you can also branch out to other Spanish media like online videos, TED talks and movies.

You could also try a language learning program, like the FluentU Spanish program, which features Spanish videos with learning tools.

How to Turn Blog Reading into Active Spanish Learning

  • Take notes. Pull out your pen and paper and start building vocabulary lists. This doesn’t need to be excessive—jot down two to three new words each time you read a post. At first, two to three words don’t sound like much, but if you’re reading daily, you’ll have 60-90 new words compiled monthly.
  • Read and participate in discussions. Under blog posts, there’s often a comments section where readers engage in active discussion, sharing their opinions on and reactions to the information presented. Read previous messages and participate yourself.
  • Write summaries of posts. For every post you read, try to write a three to five sentence summary, in Spanish, of what you’ve read. Stick to the post’s topic and mention a few things you learned, liked or that stuck out for you about the post.

There you have it, nine excellent blogs… and many more to be discovered.

To find more, simply go onto Google, type in words in Spanish that relate to your interests alongside the word “blog,” and see all the options that pop up!

Remember that many blogs, like the ones mentioned above, host guest bloggers’ posts from time to time, so take a look around and take advantage.

Who knows, you might get so inspired that you start your own business or begin traveling the world…all thanks to immersing yourself more in Spanish blogs and media.

¡Hasta la próxima, amigos (until next time friends)!
