You could say the soldiers were 镇定自若(zhèn dìng zì ruò).
镇定自若 (zhèn dìng zì ruò) means to remain calm, even in emergency circumstances. 镇定自若(zhèn dìng zì ruò) is actually composed of two words, both of which mean to be calm and composed:
镇定 (zhèn dìng): calm and composed
自若 (zì ruò): calm and at ease
Here are examples of how 镇定自若 (zhèn dìng zì ruò) is used by real live Chinese people.
Usage 1) 镇定自若+地+Verb.
Example 1 A)
“wǒ zhèn dìng zì ruò de biǎo shì wǒ kě wàng jìn rù wēi ruǎn yíng jiē tiǎo zhàn”
“I calmly expressed that I am eager to enter Microsoft and welcome challenges”
Example 1 B)
“… zài miàn shì chǎng shàng bì néng zhèn dìng zì ruò de biǎo dá zì jǐ de xiǎng fǎ hé guān diǎn “
“… during interviews, you need to be able to calmly express your thoughts and point of view”
Usage 2) 镇定自若+的+Noun.
Example 2 A)
“dì zhèn fā shēng shí, zhì guān zhòng yào de shì yào yǒu qīng xǐng de tóu nǎo, zhèn dìng zì ruò de tài dù”
“During earthquakes, it’s vital to keep a cool head and a calm attitude”
Usage 3) Verb+得+镇定自若.
Example 3 A)
“zuò wéi 1989 nián chū shēng de xiǎo jiàng, lǐ wén zài chǎng shàng tī de zhèn dìng zì ruò “
“For a young talent born in 1989, Li Wen plays very calmly on the field”

“páng rén zhì yí tā de nián líng, wáng tiě liàn dá de zhèn dìng zì ruò“
“Other people questioned her age, and one after another Wang Tie replied calmly“
