Business Chinese Vocabulary List: Foreign Companies in Chinese

Ever wonder if you’d still be able to ask where the closest “Starbucks” is or “Nike” store in China?

How about ordering a hamburger once you found the closest “McDonald’s”?

Knowing how to say these worldwide company names can be extremely useful since sometimes, it doesn’t really sound the same in Mandarin Chinese.

Luckily, some companies like McDonalds sounds like “McDonalds” in Chinese. Other foreign companies like Apple Inc. literally translates the meaning into Mandarin Chinese. Essentially the fruit, apple, means Apple Inc.

And then, there are some companies that do a combination of a direct translation and a phonetic one like Starbucks. They literally translate the “star” of Starbucks and make the “bucks” sound the same in Chinese.

Here’s a vocabulary list of the names of some major multinational brands and companies! I would have found this very useful when I was looking for a new phone but couldn’t say any of the brand names like “Samsung” or “Nokia.”
