For example:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>Ich habe meiner Mutter den Computer gegeben.<br \/>\n<\/em>I gave the computer to my mom.<\/p>\n<p>The noun in the dative case here would be <em>meiner Mutter<\/em> (to my mother) since it&#8217;s the indirect object &#8220;receiving&#8221; the direct object.<\/p>\n<p>The dative case can also be triggered by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/german\/german-prepositions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">certain prepositions<\/a> or certain verbs.<\/p>\n<p>But you may be asking how the dative actually changes things.<\/p>\n<p>For<strong> nouns, we change the article before it if it&#8217;s in the dative case.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For example, <em>der Hund<\/em> (the dog) becomes <em>dem Hund<\/em><i>\u00a0<\/i>in the dative case.<\/p>\n<p><strong>German pronouns also have to be changed to their dative equivalent.<\/strong>\u00a0In the earlier sentence, if we want to replace <em>meiner Mutter<\/em> with a German pronoun, we have\u00a0to use the dative equivalent of &#8220;she&#8221;:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>Ich habe ihr den Computer gegeben.<br \/>\n<\/em>I gave the computer to her.<\/p>\n<h2>What Are Dative Pronouns in German?<\/h2>\n<p>There are two types of pronouns that are used in the dative case in German:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Personal pronouns<\/li>\n<li>Inanimate object pronouns<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Personal Pronouns in the Dative Case<\/h3>\n<p>The first type is personal pronouns. This comes from <em>Sie<\/em> with a capital S, which is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/german\/you-in-german\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the formal pronoun for &#8220;you&#8221;<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>Er hilft <strong>Ihnen.<\/strong><\/em> (second person, formal)<em><br \/>\n<\/em>He helps<strong> you.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><i>Ihnen <\/i>is also used in this way in the common sentence <em>Wie geht es Ihnen?<\/em><i>\u00a0<\/i>(How are you?)<\/p>\n<h3>Inanimate Object Pronouns in the Dative Case<\/h3>\n<p>In English, we refer to humans as either &#8220;he,&#8221; &#8220;she,&#8221; or &#8220;they,&#8221; and then all non-human entities are just &#8220;it.&#8221; However, in German, all things have a grammatical gender that you need to use when referring to it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So, you wouldn&#8217;t use the pronoun <em>es\u00a0<\/em>(it) when referring to a table, because a table is\u00a0<em>der Tisch<\/em> (the table), so you&#8217;d need to use the masculine pronoun <em>er <\/em>(he\/it).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><i>Wie gro\u00df ist der Tisch?
