Plural Nouns<\/h3>\n<p>Plural nouns are often the first places that German learners encounter the umlaut. Present Tense Modal Verbs<\/h3>\n<p>Modal verbs are auxiliary (or &#8220;helping&#8221;) verbs that are used alongside the main verb for a specific purpose\u2014such as indicating permission, desire or ability to do something.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the most important <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/german\/german-modal-verbs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">German modal verbs<\/a> include <em>k\u00f6nnen <\/em> (can), <em>sollen <\/em> (should), <em>m\u00fcssen <\/em> (must), <em>d\u00fcrfen <\/em> (may) and <em>wollen <\/em> (to want).<\/p>\n<p>The modal verbs that contain umlauts can be quite tricky to handle, because <strong>you&#8217;ll only see the umlaut in certain forms of the verb<\/strong>. Verbs in the Subjunctive<\/h3>\n<p>Specifically, you&#8217;ll often find umlauts in the <em>konjunktiv II pr\u00e4teritum<\/em> (past subjunctive) form of German verbs.<\/p>\n<p>This is notable because it <strong>makes it really easy to put these verbs into the past subjunctive<\/strong>. All you have to do is make small changes to the past tense form of the verb to make it a past subjunctive form.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s take a look at the verb <em>haben <\/em> (to have) in the past
