Was hast du\/haben Sie gestern getan?\u00a0<\/em>(How are you? What did you do yesterday?)<\/p>\n<h2>3.\u00a0<em>Guten Appetit! \u2014 <\/em>Enjoy your meal!<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Let\u2019s practice:\u00a0<\/strong>You\u2019re sitting at the table. The repast is stretched before you. Magnificent smells are wafting up and your mouth is starting to water.<\/p>\n<p>You look to the left and to the right, but everybody is sitting still and expectant\u2014shouldn\u2019t your guests be digging in?<\/p>\n<p><em>Nein!<\/em> (No!)\u00a0They\u2019re waiting for the signal, and you, the host, are the one to give it!<\/p>\n<p><strong>You say: <\/strong><em>Guten Appetit\/Ich w<\/em><em>\u00fcnsche alle einen guten Appetit!\u00a0<\/em>(Enjoy your food\/I wish you all a good meal!)<\/p>\n<h2>4. <em>Prost!\/Zum Wohl! \u2014 <\/em>Cheers!\/To your health!<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Let\u2019s practice:\u00a0<\/strong>You\u2019re relaxed and you\u2019ve been eyeing the wine that your host has put out. But nobody has touched their glass and you\u2019re a little confused.<\/p>\n<p>Suddenly, your host stands up, looks everyone in the eyes and calls <em>&#8220;Prost.&#8221;<\/em> There&#8217;s much clinking of glasses and drinking and you decide that you want to get in on this!<\/p>\n<p><strong>You say (while looking at the person you\u2019re toasting): <\/strong><em>Prost\/zum Wohl!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Note:\u00a0<\/strong><em>Prost<\/em> is a little more informal than<em>\u00a0zum Wohl.\u00a0<\/em>If you\u2019re uncertain then follow the lead of your hosts or other guests.<\/p>\n<h2>5. <em>F\u00fchlen Sie\/f\u00fchl dich wie zu Hause! \u2014 <\/em>Feel at home here!<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Let\u2019s practice:\u00a0<\/strong>You sigh heavily. There\u2019s one guest who seems to be holding himself rather stiffly, as if he\u2019s afraid he\u2019s going to make a mess. There&#8217;s a time and a place for everything. And there are rules to go along with it.<\/p>\n<p><em>Schulordnung<\/em> (school rules).\u00a0<em>Arbeitsordnung<\/em> (work rules).\u00a0<em>\u00d6ffentliche Ordnung<\/em>\u00a0(public order).\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bussgeld-info.de\/stvo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Stra\u00dfenverkehrsordnung\u00a0<\/em>(traffic rules)<\/a><em>.\u00a0<\/em>And the list goes on.<\/p>\n<p>Although predictably there are also\u00a0<em>Hausordnung\u00a0<\/em>(house rules), home is one of the places where Germans can really kick back, relax and be their most laid-back selves. As such, typically only very close friends or family are invited into the home. They just don\u2019t\u00a0<em>do <\/em>&#8220;fashionably late.&#8221; Demonstrating\u00a0<em>P\u00fcnktlichkeit\u00a0<\/em>(punctuality) will warm the cockles of their hearts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Take your shoes off at the door.<\/strong> Obey the\u00a0<em>Hausordnung!\u00a0<\/em>Germans like to keep things neat and tidy, and will often offer you a pair of\u00a0<em>Hausschuhe<\/em>\u00a0(slippers) so that your feet don\u2019t get cold.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Bring a small gift.<\/strong> Chocolates and wine are always acceptable and if you want to try your hand at some home baking, go for it! Flowers are also a good bet\u2014but avoid roses (they\u2019re for romance!) or carnations (funerals).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Keep the conversation away from business.<\/strong> Keep it bright and cheerful!
