Even if you don&#8217;t include any or all of those elements, you can still be sure that the words are placed in the correct order.<\/p>\n<p>As you read through the examples below, notice the different word order from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/german\/similarities-between-german-and-english\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">German to English<\/a>. Not all expressions translate well. However, you might consider what the sentences would lose if you removed the adverb.<\/p>\n<h2>Adverbs of Time<\/h2>\n<p>Use adverbs of time to specify when or how frequently an action occurs. Pay attention to word order with time-sensitive adverbs. Most often, as you can see from the bolded text, these adverbs <strong>come at the beginning of the sentence<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>immer<\/em><\/strong> \u2014always<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>oft <\/em><\/strong><em>\u2014<\/em><strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>often<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>manchmal<\/em><\/strong> \u2014 sometimes<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>nie \/ nimmer<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 never<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em><strong>Nie<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0is often used to show never having done something.\u00a0<em><strong>Nimmer<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0usually holds the connotation of having done something, but never wanting to do it\u00a0<em>again.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>gestern<\/em> <\/strong>\u2014<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>yesterday<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>heute<\/em><\/strong> \u2014 today<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>morgen<\/em><\/strong> \u2014 tomorrow<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>morgens<\/em><\/strong> \u2014 mornings<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>nachmittag<\/em><\/strong> \u2014 in the afternoon<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>nachts \/ abends<\/em><\/strong> \u2014 evening\/at night<\/p>\n<p><strong>Examples of Adverbs of Time:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em><b>Nie<\/b>\u00a0habe ich Deutschland besucht, doch\u00a0<b>nimmer<\/b>\u00a0werde ich Russia besuchen. <\/em>(Never have I visited Germany, but never again will I visit Russia.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>Wir gehen <b>oft<\/b> ins Kino. <\/em>(We go to the movies often.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em><b>Oft <\/b>backe\u00a0ich kleine Torten f\u00fcr mein Freund. <\/em>(Often I bake small tortes for my boyfriend.)<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Oft<\/em><\/strong>, as you can see, can either come first in the sentence or in third position. Emphasis is the determining factor here. When I say &#8220;We go to the movies often,&#8221; I can also say, &#8220;<strong><em>Oft<\/em><\/strong><em> gehen wir ins Kino,<\/em>&#8221; meaning &#8220;Often we go to the movies.&#8221; Depending on the context, conversation might lead you to use <strong><em>oft<\/em><\/strong> at the beginning of the sentence, or in the third position.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the following examples work the same way:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em><b><em>Manchmal<\/em><\/b> trage ich meine Sonnenbrille, aber <b>nimmer<\/b> vergesse ich sie. <\/em>(Sometimes I wear my sunglasses, but I never forget them.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em><b><em>Gestern<\/em><\/b> bin ich in den Supermarkt gegangen. <b>Morgen <\/b>muss ich den Arzt besuchen. <\/em>(Yesterday I went to the supermarket. Tomorrow I must visit my doctor.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>Meine Mutter kommt <b>heute<\/b>, aber ich bin nicht bereit!<\/em> (My mother comes today, but I&#8217;m not ready!)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em><b>Nachmittags<\/b> gehe ich in die Bibliothek, aber <b>abends<\/b> muss ich arbeiten.<\/em> (In the afternoon I go to the library, but in the evening I have to work.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em><b>Morgens<\/b> gehe ich mit Fluffy spazieren, dann gehen wir beide zusammen zur Schule.<\/em> (In the morning I walk Fluffy, then we both go to school together.)<\/p>\n<h2>Adverbs of Manner<\/h2>\n<p>Adverbs of manner show emotion or condition, basically how an action was completed. Whether you eat <em>furiously<\/em> or run <em>lazily<\/em>, these adverbs will help you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/german\/feelings-emotions-in-german\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">express those feelings<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>allein \/ alleine<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 alone<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>zusammen<\/em><\/strong> \u2014 together<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>nat\u00fcrlich <\/em><\/strong><em>\u2014<\/em><strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>naturally<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>freiwillig <\/em><\/strong><em>\u2014<\/em><strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>voluntarily<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>langsam<\/em><\/strong> \u2014 slowly<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>sicherlich<\/em><\/strong> \u2014 certainly<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>z\u00f6gerlich<\/em><\/strong> \u2014 reluctantly<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>w\u00fctend <\/strong><\/em><em>\u2014<\/em><em><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>angrily<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>gern \/ gerne <\/em><\/strong><em>\u2014<\/em><strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>gladly<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>widerwillig<\/em><\/strong> \u2014 stubbornly<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>leichtsinnig<\/em><\/strong> \u2014 recklessly<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>vielleicht<\/em><\/strong> \u2014 maybe<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>lieber<\/em><\/strong> \u2014 rather<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>hoffentlich<\/em><\/strong> \u2014 hopefully<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>eventuell<\/em><\/strong> \u2014 possibly<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>zuf\u00e4llig<\/em><\/strong> \u2014 per chance<\/p>\n<p><strong>Examples of Adverbs of Manner:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em><em>Wir fliegen <b>nat\u00fcrlich<\/b> <b>zusammen<\/b> nach <\/em>Las Vegas. <\/em>(Naturally, we fly together to Las Vegas.)<\/p>\n<p>In this case, the phrase &#8220;Of course&#8221; might better express the intent of the German adverb &#8220;naturally.&#8221; Just as &#8220;of course&#8221; symbolizes an action would usually not occur any other way (i.e., &#8220;Of course we have to check in before we can enter.&#8221;), <em>nat\u00fcrlich<\/em> exhibits the same properties.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em><b>Langsam<\/b> gehe ich spazieren. <\/em>(I walk slowly.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em><b>Sicherlich<\/b> habe ich heute den Abfall weggeworfen. <\/em>(I&#8217;m certain I threw away the trash today.)<\/p>\n<p>In this sentence, you could also replace &#8220;I&#8217;m certain&#8221; with &#8220;Surely,&#8221; as in &#8220;Surely, I threw the trash away today.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>Er macht <b>gern<\/b> seine Aufgabe, aber Kristin sitzt <b>w\u00fctend<\/b><\/em>. You might be pointing to a map and say <em><strong>da<\/strong><\/em>, meaning there.
