You know, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/german\/blog\/how-to-order-food-in-german\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to order food for you <em>and\u00a0<\/em>your friend<\/a>\u00a0or for when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/german\/learn-german-tv-shows\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">you want to watch two movies in one night<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To get you there, this post will guide you through five ways to build German plurals, with plenty of examples to help.<\/p>\n<p>[fluentu-toc]<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h2>How to Form German Plurals<\/h2>\n<p>In English, we have it easy. We usually only need to add an &#8220;s&#8221; on to the end of nouns to create plurals: &#8220;dog&#8221; becomes &#8220;dogs&#8221; and &#8220;tree&#8221; becomes &#8220;trees.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In German, things are a little more complex. There are five different ways to create a plural noun.<\/p>\n<p>There is one golden rule to remember when building your plurals, however: Plural nouns always use\u00a0<strong><em>die<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0as their definite article. Add an <em>-e<\/em> ending<\/h3>\n<p>This is the most common way to form a plural\u2014simply add an -e to the end of the word, much like how we add an \u201cs\u201d in English! 89% of masculine nouns and 75% of feminine nouns take this form.<\/p>\n<p><strong>All <span class=\"glossary\" data-term=\"601\">masculine<\/span>\u00a0nouns with the endings\u00a0<em class=\"nowrap\">-eur, -ich, -ier, -ig, -ling, -\u00f6r <\/em>take this -e plural ending.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>der K\u00e4fig \u2192 die K\u00e4fig<i>e<\/i><\/em> (the cage \u2192the cages)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Many single-syllable <span class=\"glossary\" data-term=\"547\">feminine<\/span> nouns also take this ending.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>die Hand \u2192die Hande<\/em> (the hand \u2192 the hands)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Feminine nouns and most masculine plural nouns need an umlaut.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>der Koch \u2192 die K\u00f6che<\/em> (the chef \u2192 the chefs)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>der Hund \u2192 die Hunde<\/em> (the dog \u2192 the dogs) [This masculine noun doesn&#8217;t need the umlaut]<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>die Gans \u2192 die G\u00e4nse<\/em> (the goose \u2192 the geese)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Neuter plural nouns hardly ever add an umlaut.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>das Pferd \u2192 die Pferde\u00a0<\/em>(the horse \u2192 the horses)<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left\">2. Add an <em>-er<\/em> ending<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Many\u00a0single-syllable <span class=\"glossary\" data-term=\"611\">neuter<\/span> nouns take this ending.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>das Haus \u2192 die H\u00e4user<\/em> (the house<em> \u2192 <\/em>the houses)<\/p>\n<p><strong>It also occurs in masculine nouns, but very rarely.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>der Mund \u2192 die M\u00fcnder <\/em>(the mouth\u00a0 \u2192 the mouths)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Don&#8217;t forget to add an umlaut to the stem word\u2014this almost always occurs.<\/li>\n<li>Keep in mind that feminine nouns never take this ending.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left\">3. Add an <em>-n\/en<\/em> ending<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Add this ending to <span class=\"glossary\" data-term=\"601\">masculine<\/span>\u00a0nouns with the endings\u00a0<em class=\"nowrap\">-e<\/em>,\u00a0<em class=\"nowrap\">-ent<\/em>,\u00a0<em>and<\/em>,\u00a0<em class=\"nowrap\">-ant<\/em>,\u00a0<em class=\"nowrap\">-ist, -or.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>der Student \u2192 die Studenten<\/em> (the student \u2192 the students)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>das Auge \u2192 die Augen<\/em> (the eye<em> \u2192 <\/em>the eyes)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>der Name \u2192 die Namen<\/em> (the name<em> \u2192 <\/em>the names)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>die Lehre \u2192 die Lehren<\/em> (the teacher<em> \u2192 <\/em>the teachers)<\/p>\n<p><strong><span class=\"glossary\" data-term=\"547\">Add<em> -en<\/em> to feminine<\/span>\u00a0nouns with the endings\u00a0<em class=\"nowrap\">-e, -in, -ion, -ik, -heit, -keit, -schaft, -t\u00e4t, -ung<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>die Nation \u2192 die Nationen<\/em> (the nation\u00a0\u2192 the nations)<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left\">4. Add an <em>-s<\/em> ending<\/h3>\n<p>This plural ending applies to:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Words borrowed from English, Dutch or French<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>das Radio \u2192 die Radios<\/em> (the radio<em> \u2192 <\/em>the radios)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Abbreviations<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>die CD \u2192 die CDs<\/em> (the CD<em> \u2192 <\/em>the CDs)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Peoples&#8217; names<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>der Julia \u2192 die Julias<\/em> (Julia<em> \u2192 <\/em>the\u00a0Julias)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Words that end in an unstressed vowel<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>das Kino \u2192 die Kinos<\/em> (the cinema<em> \u2192 <\/em>the cinemas)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note that you never need to add an extra umlaut to any of these plurals.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left\">5. No change<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Some nouns do not change when creating a plural.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>der Onkel \u2192 die Onkel<\/em> (uncle \u2192\u00a0uncles)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>das M\u00e4dchen \u2192 die M\u00e4dchen\u00a0<\/em>(the girl \u2192 the girls)<\/p>\n<h2>How to Learn German Plurals<\/h2>\n<p>You could just sit down at your desk one day and try to learn German plurals drill style\u2013that is, constantly repeating words until they just stick in your head\u2014but that wouldn&#8217;t be very effective, and it would no doubt bore you to tears. Most of these can be played online, but there are also some that you can download or print off. Why not invite your friends to play these games together? You can help each other out trying to nail the German plural!<\/p>\n<p><strong>You can also cover your room in plurals. <\/strong>Are you ready for your room to be redecorated? I know a way that&#8217;s cheap and will help your German. Write a noun and its plural down on large pieces of paper. Color them really brightly if you want. Then, stick a few of these sheets of paper on your walls\u2014in fact, stick them anywhere you can. Maybe even in your bathroom! You&#8217;ll be seeing these all day as you go around your usual daily business. After they&#8217;ve been up for a week, test yourself to see if you can remember the noun&#8217;s plural. You&#8217;ll be surprised by how much unknowingly sinks in when you aren&#8217;t taking too much notice!
