Whether it&#8217;s people, animals, or objects, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/korean\/korean-counters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">each requires its own counter<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To actually use these counters, you must use this formula:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>\u00a0<\/em><strong>Object (What) + Korean Number (How Many) + Counter<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Some of these counters are:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><strong>\uac1c<\/strong> <em>(gae)<\/em> is used for counting objects.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px\">For example: \uc0ac\uacfc \uc5ec\uc12f \uac1c\u00a0(six apples)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><strong>\uba85<\/strong> <em>(myeong)<\/em> \/ <strong>\uc0ac\ub78c<\/strong>\u00a0<em>(saram)<\/em> is used for counting people.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px\">For example: \uc5f4 \uba85\u00a0(10 people)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><strong>\ub9c8\ub9ac<\/strong> <em>(mari)<\/em> is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/korean\/animals-in-korean\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">used for counting animals<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px\">For example: \uace0\uc591\uc774 \uc5ec\ub35f \ub9c8\ub9ac\u00a0(eight cats)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><strong>\uc7a5<\/strong> <em>(jang)<\/em> is used for counting flat objects (eg. sheets of paper).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px\">For example: \uc885\uc774 \uc77c\uacf1 \uc7a5\u00a0(seven sheets of paper)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Special Numbers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1, 2, 3, 4 and 20 are special because they <strong>drop their last letter when they&#8217;re paired with a counter<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>For example, \ud558\ub098, when paired with a counter \uba85 isn&#8217;t \ud558\ub098 \uba85 <em>(hana myeong), <\/em>but rather \ud55c \uba85 <em>(han myeong)<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the rest of the transformations. Yup, Sino-Korean numbers are used to count larger numbers.
