Numbers are in everything: addresses, restaurant menus, money, plane tickets, even episodes of your favorite Korean drama<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In this post, I’ll cover both number systems used in Korea\u2014native numbers and Sino-Korean numbers<\/strong>, so you’ll know how and when to use them.<\/p>\n

Native Korean Numbers<\/h2>\n

Native Korean numbers are used when counting, talking about age<\/a> or telling time. Read this post about how to tell time in Korean<\/a> to perfect that skill.<\/p>\n

Native Korean numbers go only as high as 99.<\/strong> Once you need to use a higher number, you will switch to the other Sino-Korean system.<\/p>\n

1-10<\/h3>\n

11-19<\/h3>\n

Going beyond 10 is really easy. You just use the formula:<\/p>\n

10 + X<\/strong><\/p>\n

So for 11, we have 10 + 1 which is \uc5f4\ud558\ub098 (yulhana). <\/em>The numbers 11-19 are known as the yul<\/em> series because they all start with yul<\/em> and are suffixed with the numbers from one to nine.<\/p>\n

20-90<\/h3>\n

For building the numbers in between, the method is the same. For example, for the 20 series, you use this formula:<\/p>\n

20 + X<\/strong><\/p>\n

So for 21, you take 20, \uc2a4\ubb3c, and one, \ud558\ub098, and you combine them into \uc2a4\ubb3c\ud558\ub098 (seumulhana).<\/em><\/p>\n

More About Native Korean Numbers<\/h3>\n

Korean Counters<\/strong><\/p>\n

Counting in Korean requires tags that allow us to identify what types or class of things we’re counting. Whether it’s people, animals, or objects, each requires its own counter<\/a>.<\/p>\n

To actually use these counters, you must use this formula:<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/em>Object (What) + Korean Number (How Many) + Counter<\/strong><\/p>\n

Some of these counters are:<\/p>\n

\uac1c<\/strong> (gae)<\/em> is used for counting objects.<\/p>\n

For example: \uc0ac\uacfc \uc5ec\uc12f \uac1c\u00a0(six apples)<\/p>\n

\uba85<\/strong> (myeong)<\/em> \/ \uc0ac\ub78c<\/strong>\u00a0(saram)<\/em> is used for counting people.<\/p>\n

For example: \uc5f4 \uba85\u00a0(10 people)<\/p>\n

\ub9c8\ub9ac<\/strong> (mari)<\/em> is used for counting animals<\/a>.<\/p>\n

For example: \uace0\uc591\uc774 \uc5ec\ub35f \ub9c8\ub9ac\u00a0(eight cats)<\/p>\n

\uc7a5<\/strong> (jang)<\/em> is used for counting flat objects (eg. sheets of paper).<\/p>\n

For example: \uc885\uc774 \uc77c\uacf1 \uc7a5\u00a0(seven sheets of paper)<\/p>\n

Special Numbers<\/strong><\/p>\n

1, 2, 3, 4 and 20 are special because they drop their last letter when they’re paired with a counter<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

For example, \ud558\ub098, when paired with a counter \uba85 isn’t \ud558\ub098 \uba85 (hana myeong), <\/em>but rather \ud55c \uba85 (han myeong)<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Here are the rest of the transformations. Notice how they drop the last letter:<\/p>\n

Sino-Korean Numbers<\/h2>\n

Did you know that there’s a second number system in Korean? Yup, Sino-Korean numbers are used to count larger numbers. (More about why this is at the end of the post.)<\/p>\n

You can also see Sino-Korean used a lot for dates, times, currency, phone numbers, measurements, addresses and more!<\/p>\n

As you may have already noticed, the formula for numbers 11-19 is still:<\/p>\n

10 + X<\/strong><\/p>\n

So \uc2ed, which is the Sino-Korean number for 10, comes first and is then suffixed by the ones digit (X).<\/p>\n

That\u2019s why 17 in the Sino-Korean nomenclature is \uc2ed\uce60 (shipchil)<\/em> following the 10 + X formula.<\/p>\n

20-90<\/h3>\n

You\u2019ll see next that the situation reverses when you deal with 20s, 30s, 40s and so on:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\t\n\n\t\n\t\n\t\n\t\n\t\n\t\n\t\n\t

This time, when you\u2019re dealing with the tens (20-90), the formula is reversed. It becomes:<\/p>\n

X + 10<\/strong><\/p>\n

The number 80, for example, becomes \ud314\uc2ed (palship),<\/em> where \ud314 is the Sino-Korean number for eight and is suffixed by \uc2ed, which is 10.<\/p>\n

Now that we know how counting by tens works, we can easily work out how the numbers between them like 25, 38 or 49 are written.<\/p>\n

You simply add the ones digit at the end.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Let\u2019s designate the ones digit as \u201cY\u201d this time. So the formula becomes:<\/p>\n

X + 10 + Y<\/strong><\/p>\n

You\u2019ll notice that the hundreds follow the same form as the ones.<\/p>\n

Since three is \uc0bc, 300 is \uc0bc\ubc31 (sam-baek)<\/em> and since seven is \uce60, 700 is \uce60\ubc31 (chil-baek).<\/em><\/p>\n

For non-round numbers like 367, you just tack on 67 to the tail of 300. So it becomes \uc0bc\ubc31\uc721\uc2ed\uce60 (sambaek-yukship-chil).<\/em><\/p>\n

For non-rounded numbers like 1,367, you just tack on 67 to the tail of 300. So it becomes \ucc9c\uc0bc\ubc31\uc721\uc2ed\uce60 (cheon-sambaek-yukship-chil).<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\n

10,000+<\/h3>\n

The number 10,000, \ub9cc<\/strong> (man), <\/em>is an inflection point in this number system because Koreans count in increments of 10,000.<\/p>\n

This is unlike most of the Western world which counts in multiples of 1,000.<\/p>\n

For a Westerner\u2014100,000 is 100 multiples of 1,000.<\/strong><\/p>\n

For Koreans\u2014100,000 is 10 multiples of 10,000.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In this number system, 10 million is \ucc9c\ub9cc<\/strong> (cheonman)<\/em> because 10 million is 1,000 multiples of 10,000.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Just remember to drop the last four digits of the big number <\/strong>then compose whatever’s left and suffix that number with \ub9cc (man).<\/em><\/p>\n

Then bring back the four digits that you dropped and compose it as you normally would.<\/p>\n

For example, in 127,563 we first drop the last four digits, so only the 12 remains (like 12 multiples of 10,000). So 127,563 is \uc2ed\uc774\ub9cc \uce60\ucc9c\uc624\ubc31\uc721\uc2ed\uc0bc.<\/p>\n

\ubc31\ub9cc<\/strong>\u00a0(Baek-man)<\/em> \u2014 1 million because it\u2019s 100 x 10,000<\/p>\n

\ucc9c\ub9cc<\/strong> (Cheon-man)<\/em> \u2014 10 million because it\u2019s 1,000 x 10,000<\/p>\n

\uc5b5<\/strong> (Eok) <\/em>\u2014 100 million<\/p>\n

\uc870<\/strong> (Jo)<\/em> \u2014 1 trillion<\/p>\n

How to Say the Date in Korean<\/h3>\n

In Korea, the date is formatted \u201cYear-Month-Day,” as in 2022 \ub144<\/strong> 4 \uc6d4<\/strong> 16 \uc77c<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\ub144<\/strong> (Nyeon) <\/em>\u2014 year<\/p>\n

\uc6d4<\/strong> (Wol)<\/em> \u2014 month<\/p>\n

\uc77c<\/strong> (Il)<\/em> \u2014 day<\/p>\n

The date above, 2022 \ub144 4 \uc6d4 16 \uc77c, is read as \uc774\ucc9c\uc774\uc2ed\uc774 \ub144 \uc0ac \uc6d4 \uc2ed\uc721 \uc77c.<\/em><\/p>\n

How to Say Phone Numbers in Korean<\/h3>\n

When saying a phone number, Koreans will say each individual number.<\/p>\n

Koreans also use \uc5d0 (e)<\/em> to signify a \u201cdash\u201d between the group of numbers.<\/p>\n

The numbers 1, \uc77c (il),\u00a0<\/em> and 2, \uc774 (i),<\/em> sound very similar so sometimes \uc77c (il)<\/em> is replaced with the native Korean 1\ud558\ub098 (hana)<\/em> to avoid confusion.<\/p>\n

For telephone numbers, \uacf5 (gong)<\/em> is used for zeroes.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s look at a couple of examples:<\/p>\n

Other Uses of the Sino-Korean System<\/h3>\n

The Sino-Korean number system is used to express any number larger than 100.<\/p>\n

This system is also used for currency<\/a>, addresses, measurements and more.<\/p>\n

Korean has two number systems<\/a> due to the influence of China.<\/p>\n

Since China and Korea share a border, they share a lot of cultural and linguistic characteristics. In fact, it’s even said that 60% of the Korean language has Chinese origins<\/a>.<\/p>\n

So there are two number systems: one that is native and one that has Chinese elements.<\/p>\n
