Immediate family members include parents, siblings, spouses and children. Some of the phrases used to refer to these family members include parenti stretti<\/em> (lit. “tight relatives”), parenti prossimi<\/em> (lit. “close relatives”) and parenti di primo grado<\/em> (lit. “first-degree relatives”)<\/p>\n

Italian Words for “Father”<\/h3>\n

There are many ways to refer to your father in Italian. For example,\u00a0babbo<\/em> is mostly used in Tuscany and other central regions of Italy, such as Umbria. Quick pronunciation note:<\/strong> The g<\/em> here is silent. When you have gli<\/em> in Italian, you pronounce it as a double\u00a0l<\/em> or ll.<\/em> So figlio<\/em>\u00a0is pronounced \u201cfee-llyo,\u201d and figlia<\/em>\u00a0is pronounced \u201cfee-llya\u201d\u2014with the letter g<\/em>\u00a0nowhere to be heard.<\/p>\n

Sons and daughters are coddled in childhood, with the family unit (and its extension) specifically geared to raising them properly. In return, the kids are expected to show respect to elders.<\/p>\n

There are many different words you can use to say \u201cbaby\u201d in Italian, depending on different factors such as the region of Italy and the age of the child.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Beb\u00e8<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0neonato<\/em>\u00a0 are often used to say \u201cbaby\u201d or \u201cnewborn\u201d in Italian.\u00a0Bimbo<\/em> (baby boy\/little boy) and\u00a0bimba<\/em> (baby girl\/little girl) are often used for infants up until the age of around 3 years old, although this may vary depending on the region of Italy.<\/p>\n

It used to be that\u00a0fidanzato<\/em> and\u00a0fidanzata<\/em> only referred to people who were set to be married. But over time, their use has extended to simple boyfriend-girlfriend relationships.<\/p>\n

As well as\u00a0fidanzato <\/em>and fidanzata<\/em>, you may also hear the terms\u00a0ragazzo<\/em> (boy) and\u00a0ragazza<\/em> (girl) which can also be used to convey boyfriend-girlfriend relationships. You say:<\/p>\n

It\u2019s worth, however, noting that ragazzo\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0ragazza<\/em> are mostly used in Italian by teenagers and young adults in a relationship. It\u2019s more common to hear adults in long-term relationships use fidanzato <\/em>and\u00a0fidanzata<\/em>.<\/p>\n

You may also hear adults say\u00a0compagno<\/em> and\u00a0compagna<\/em>, which are used in Italian to say \u201cpartner,\u201d for example, when you’re an adult and you’re not legally married to your other half.<\/p>\n
