In Italy, foreigners are often pulled into conversations, invited to parties and\u2014in many cases\u2014made to feel like family. Relationships are important to Italians, so knowing how to introduce yourself in Italian may involve more than just a handshake and a smile.<\/p>\n

In this post, I’ll walk you through the phrases to use, some cultural notes to keep in mind regarding Italian introductions and where you can learn more about these introductions. Let\u2019s learn how to make friends in Bel Paese<\/em> (the Beautiful Country).<\/p>\n

1. Ciao<\/em> (Hello \/ Goodbye)<\/h2>\n

A smile and ciao<\/em> are usually enough to break the ice in Italy.<\/p>\n

Ciao<\/em> is one of those flexible greetings<\/a> that can mean both “hello” and “goodbye.” In other words, you can use it to start or end a conversation.<\/p>\n

After you\u2019ve gotten to know someone a bit, they might greet or leave you with a ciao-ciao<\/em>. It\u2019s a less formal version of the standard ciao,<\/em> kind of like the American “bye-bye.” Once you feel comfortable with someone, use this friendlier version, and you might get a smile in return!<\/p>\n

2. Salve<\/em> (Hello)<\/h2>\n

If you\u2019re meeting someone in a formal setting, salve<\/em> is a great choice for saying hello. It\u2019s a bit more formal than ciao<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Not sure which version of “hello” to use? Remember that you really can\u2019t go wrong with salve<\/em>. If it feels a bit reserved, that\u2019s fine. Better to be cautious than appear disrespectful!<\/p>\n

3. Buongiorno<\/em> (Good day)<\/h2>\n

Italians are wonderfully welcoming! Not only do they say hello, but they also like to wish people a good day. It\u2019s acceptable to opt for buongiorno<\/em> instead of ciao<\/em> or salve<\/em>.<\/p>\n

You may hear buongiorno<\/em> at any time of the day, but be aware that you may also hear\u00a0buon pomeriggio<\/em> (good afternoon<\/a>) or buonasera<\/em> (good evening<\/a>), depending on the speaker\u2019s preference and the time of day.<\/p>\n

4. Mi chiamo \u2026<\/em> (My name is \u2026)<\/h2>\n

When you meet someone for the first time, the first thing you should share is your name. Introduce yourself by saying Mi chiamo <\/em>[your name].<\/p>\n

5. Sono di \u2026<\/em> (I\u2019m from \u2026)<\/h2>\n

Letting someone know you\u2019re a visitor or that you relocated from somewhere else is a good ice breaker as well.<\/p>\n

There’s no need to get fancy with this. Just say where you’re from in English to get the conversation moving. For example, “Sono di California”<\/em> (“I’m from California”) works just fine!<\/p>\n

6. Sono …<\/em> (I am …)<\/h2>\n

Speaking of which, “I am” opens a lot of conversational doors. It’s one of those amazing phrases that reveals a lot even though it’s so simple.<\/p>\n

7. Sono un \u2026<\/em> (I\u2019m a \u2026)<\/h2>\n

Sharing what you do for a living is a fantastic way to connect with a stranger. Maybe you have professional interests in common!<\/p>\n

Some common professions are listed below, with their “male \/ female” forms:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\t\n\n\t\n\t\n\t\n\t\n\t\n\t

Don’t forget to choose the form of the word appropriate to your gender<\/a>!<\/p>\n

8. Piacere di conoscerti!<\/em> (Nice to meet you!)<\/h2>\n

If Piacere di conoscerti<\/em> feels a bit too formal, it\u2019s perfectly acceptable to just say Piacere!<\/em> (Pleasure!) The abbreviated version may feel a bit awkward, but you’ll often hear it in Italy.<\/p>\n

9. Sto restando \u2026<\/em> (I am staying \u2026)<\/h2>\n

You can also politely inquire about your new acquaintance’s health and well-being. This is usually not meant literally, and you should be prepared for someone to ask you this question in return.<\/p>\n

Depending on how you feel, you can respond with either Sto bene<\/em> (I\u2019m fine) or Non molto bene.<\/em>\u00a0(Not very well.)<\/p>\n

11. Come va?<\/em> (How\u2019s it going?)<\/h2>\n

This is more informal than come stai<\/em> but the response is an easy one\u2014bene, grazie.<\/em> (Well, thanks.)<\/p>\n

12. Bel tempo!<\/em> (Nice weather!)<\/h2>\n

Chatting about the weather<\/a> is a super effective way to cozy up to someone and keep a conversation going beyond introductions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\t\n\n\t\n\t\n\t

Taking the conversation in this direction gives the person you’re asking the opportunity to point out places that they feel personally connected to. Who knows? It may even get you a friendly dinner date at a cozy restaurant<\/a>!<\/p>\n
