Thankfully, it&#8217;s not as complicated as it sounds.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s go over the three Russian noun genders and how to distinguish between them, which words change according to the gender of the noun, how Russian genders work in practice and the few gender exceptions Russian does have.<\/p>\n<p>[fluentu-toc]<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h2>What Are the Russian Noun Genders?<\/h2>\n<p>There are three noun genders in Russian: masculine, feminine and neuter. Generally, masculine nouns end in consonants (<strong>\u0431<\/strong>, <strong>\u0432<\/strong>, <strong>\u0433<\/strong>, <strong>\u0434<\/strong>, <strong>\u0436<\/strong>, <strong>\u0437<\/strong>, <strong>\u0439<\/strong>, <strong>\u043a<\/strong>, <strong>\u043b<\/strong>, <strong>\u043c<\/strong>, <strong>\u043d<\/strong>, <strong>\u043f<\/strong>, <strong>\u0440<\/strong>, <strong>\u0441<\/strong>, <strong>\u0442<\/strong>, <strong>\u0444<\/strong>, <strong>\u0445<\/strong>, <strong>\u0446<\/strong>, <strong>\u0447<\/strong>, <strong>\u0448<\/strong> or <strong>\u0449<\/strong>), feminine nouns end in <strong>\u0430<\/strong> or <strong>\u044f<\/strong> and neuter nouns end in <strong>o<\/strong> or <strong>e<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>(By the way, if you need a refresher on the Russian alphabet, here&#8217;s a guide to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/russian\/learn-russian-alphabet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Cyrillic letters<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>There are exceptions to the general rules above, of course, but we&#8217;ll get into those later. If a word is in the nominative case, then the ending of the word reveals everything.<\/p>\n<h2>Which Types of Words Change Genders in Russian?<\/h2>\n<p>You might be wondering what&#8217;s the point of learning Russian noun genders in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>Well, that&#8217;s because the following words change according to the gender of the noun they&#8217;re associated with:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/russian\/russian-adjectives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Adjectives<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/russian\/russian-verb-conjugation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Verbs (in the past tense)<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As an example, I&#8217;m a guy, and I might say:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">\u042f \u0441\u043a\u0430\u0437\u0430\u043b<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\u0442\u0435\u0431\u0435 \u0432\u0447\u0435\u0440\u0430. (I told you yesterday.)<\/p>\n<p>But someone who identifies as female would say (or write):<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">\u042f\u00a0\u0441\u043a\u0430\u0437\u0430\u043b<strong>\u0430\u00a0<\/strong>\u0442\u0435\u0431\u0435 \u0432\u0447\u0435\u0440\u0430. (I told you yesterday.)<\/p>\n<p>See the difference? The same thing works for nouns. So if you want to say that your car broke down, you need to know the gender of your car.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">\u041c\u043e\u044f <strong>\u043c\u0430\u0448\u0438\u043d\u0430<\/strong> \u0441\u043b\u043e\u043c\u0430\u043b\u0430\u0441\u044c. You still change the endings as usual\u2014\u043c\u0430\u043b\u0435\u043d\u044c\u043a\u0430\u044f is feminine and <a href=\"https:\/\/forvo.com\/word\/%D0%BC%D0%B0%D0%BB%D0%B5%D0%BD%D1%8C%D0%BA%D0%BE%D0%B5\/#ru\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u043c\u0430\u043b\u0435\u043d\u044c\u043a\u043e\u0435<\/a> is neuter.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Some adjectives also have &#8220;\u0435\u0435&#8221; for neuter nouns, and some masculine ones have &#8220;\u044b\u0439.&#8221;<\/strong> Don&#8217;t worry about this for now, though. The sounds are pretty similar and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/russian\/learn-russian-pronunciation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Russian pronunciation<\/a> often swallows the endings, so this isn&#8217;t too high of a priority.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The genders change their endings according to the case they&#8217;re in.<\/strong> Russian cases are literally an entire topic all on their own, so let me direct you to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/russian\/russian-cases\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this post<\/a> if you want to learn more about them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Exceptions to the General Russian Gender Rules<\/h2>\n<p>As I&#8217;ve mentioned earlier, there are exceptions to the general Russian gender patterns I&#8217;ve described above. Luckily, they fall into only two major categories.<\/p>\n<h3>Words ending with a soft sign (\u044c)<\/h3>\n<p>This is probably the trickiest exception because words that end in \u044c can be either masculine or feminine.<\/p>\n<p>Some common examples of words ending in a soft sign are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u0436\u0438\u0437\u043d\u044c (life)<\/li>\n<li>\u0434\u0435\u043d\u044c* (day)<\/li>\n<li>\u0434\u0432\u0435\u0440\u044c (door)<\/li>\n<li>\u043d\u043e\u0447\u044c (night)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/forvo.com\/word\/%D0%BC%D0%B0%D1%82%D1%8C\/#ru\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u043c\u0430\u0442\u044c<\/a> (mother)<\/li>\n<li>\u0447\u0430\u0441\u0442\u044c (part)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/forvo.com\/word\/%D0%BF%D1%83%D1%82%D1%8C\/#ru\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u043f\u0443\u0442\u044c<\/a>* (road)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Of the above, only the words with asterisks (\u0434\u0435\u043d\u044c and \u043f\u0443\u0442\u044c) are masculine. All of the others are feminine nouns. In fact, it&#8217;s safe to say that four times out of five, a noun ending in a soft sign is feminine.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to learn exactly which of the words ending in a soft sign are masculine and feminine, I recommend you check out this list of the <a href=\"http:\/\/masterrussian.com\/vocabulary\/common_nouns.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">500 most common nouns<\/a> in Russian. Just press &#8220;Ctrl + F&#8221; and search for &#8220;\u044c.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>Words you just have to remember<\/h3>\n<p>Unfortunately, some words are just a little different\u2014i.e., they don&#8217;t follow any specific gender patterns at all.
