I&#8217;ve gotten good feedback from my students about most of them, and I&#8217;ve personally enjoyed using them.<\/p>\n<p>Use activities that let them speak more and learn the language naturally through experimentation. The following ideas for activities are versatile, can be modified according to what you think would work best for your class and can all be done in groups or pairs.<\/p>\n<h3>1. Make it strange or different<\/h3>\n<p>Conditional chains are a great warm-up exercise, and you can also expand them if you want. Think of weird\u00a0scenarios to catch your students&#8217; interest from the get-go. Have one student say a condition and a result. Then have the next student take the result from the previous student&#8217;s sentence and make a new condition from it, along with a new result.<\/p>\n<p>For example:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Teacher: &#8220;If pigs could fly&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Student A: &#8220;If pigs could fly, they would make nests in trees.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Student B: &#8220;If pigs made nests in trees, the birds would get angry.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Student A: &#8220;If the birds got angry&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>2. Make it mysterious<\/h3>\n<p>Give students 10 (or more) conditions and have them verbally complete the results for each (or vice-versa), but out of order so their partner doesn&#8217;t know the conditional that&#8217;s being completed. Again, making strange or funny scenarios helps keep their interest. Then, the students&#8217; partners have to guess which condition the others are completing.<\/p>\n<p>For example:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Student A: &#8220;If this happened, I would cry like a baby.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Student B: &#8220;Hmm, would you cry like a baby if your favorite team lost?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Student A: &#8220;No.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Student B: &#8220;Would you cry like a baby if you failed English?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Student A: &#8220;Yes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>3. Make or use a game<\/h3>\n<p>If you&#8217;re a do-it-yourselfer, then by all means, you can make your own games. But if you&#8217;re pressed for time, <a href=\"http:\/\/busyteacher.org\/classroom_activities-vocabulary\/crosswordsboardgamesvocabulary_games-worksheets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BusyTeacher.org<\/a> has literally hundreds of games, and many of them are specifically made for practicing conditionals, including <a href=\"http:\/\/busyteacher.org\/14080-what-if.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this one<\/a>\u00a0for first and second conditionals, and <a href=\"http:\/\/busyteacher.org\/6607-third-conditional-board-game.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this one<\/a> for third conditionals.<\/p>\n<h3>4. Make them use their imaginations<\/h3>\n<p>Think of more scenarios and ask questions in a &#8220;What would you do if&#8230;?&#8221; format. They can interview partners, or write answers on papers and guess who would do what.<\/p>\n<h3>5. Make a wish<\/h3>\n<p>Show pictures of people in different situations. Have students imagine what the people wish or hope. You can also expand this by having them make\u00a0full conditional sentences based on those wishes or hopes.<\/p>\n<h3>6. Make them choose<\/h3>\n<p>Ask them &#8220;Would you rather&#8230;?&#8221; questions, and then imagine the results if they chose either option. For question ideas, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rrrather.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">rrrather.com<\/a> has some scenarios with pictures. (Just be warned that some will not be appropriate for classes and a few may even make you question humanity in general.)<\/p>\n<h2>Using Videos and Movies to Teach Conditionals in ESL Classrooms<\/h2>\n<p>I&#8217;m dating myself here, but back when I was in school, the best days were the days when we\u00a0walked into a classroom and saw the cart with the TV and VCR on it. We can keep that spirit alive when teaching conditionals. The main question becomes whether you want to find sources that already have conditionals or make your own.<\/p>\n<h3>Finding sources that already have conditionals<\/h3>\n<p>This is sometimes a bit trickier, since you have to depend on material that you find &#8220;as is.&#8221; It may not always have exactly what you&#8217;re looking for. Still, here are two good general tips:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Use music videos.<\/strong> (I&#8217;ll include song suggestions in the section below.) There are a ton of options here, and you can incorporate conditionals into your ESL classes in a way that&#8217;s fun and interesting, especially if you use a\u00a0type of music that your students already like.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Use movies.<\/strong>\u00a0This might seem a bit daunting, at least if you think you need to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/educator-english\/esl-movie-lessons\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">show the whole movie<\/a>. But generally you can just highlight a part of a movie for a specific purpose. For example, there&#8217;s a sequence about five\u00a0minutes into <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0421715\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;The Curious Case of Benjamin Button&#8221;<\/a> in which Brad Pitt&#8217;s character uses the third conditional constantly. It&#8217;s basically the holy grail of movie clips for English teachers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Making your own conditionals<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Pause to add conditionals.<\/strong>\u00a0Pause\u00a0movies or videos to ask things like &#8220;What might happen next if she goes into the room?&#8221; or &#8220;What would you do if you were her?&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Watch news reports to predict the future.<\/strong> There are countless news clips online, ranging from international conflicts to weather reports to fluff pieces about cute puppies. Have your students predict what will or might happen in the future, or talk about how things would be different if something had happened differently before.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Great English Songs with Conditionals, and How to Use Them<\/h2>\n<p>You can&#8217;t please all the people all the time, especially when it comes to music. You&#8217;ll likely never find a song that every student in your\u00a0class loves, but most of\u00a0my students have at the very least tolerated all the songs below, and some students have even commented that they really liked some of them.<\/p>\n<p>You can combine these songs with any of the techniques or activities mentioned above, depending on your needs. I&#8217;ll divide the list into the type of conditional highlighted in each song. Then, after the list, I&#8217;ll include a few more activity ideas specifically for songs.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Zero conditional<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>(Note: Many ESL curricula don&#8217;t even include zero conditional, and supposedly it&#8217;s hard to find songs that use it. Nevertheless, here are a few that I like.)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=GOt6EFqUubk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;When the Angels Sing&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0by Social Distortion<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=CZVUzho-nok\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;If I Can&#8217;t Have You&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0by Yvonne Elliman<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=up0swWdzr24\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;If I Like It, I Do It&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0by Jamiroquai<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Between zero conditional and first conditional<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=B_VUxouvHZ8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;If I Fall You&#8217;re Going Down with Me&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0by Dixie Chicks<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Zzew738f5TA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;If You Want My Love&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0by Cheap Trick<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>First conditional<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6k8cpUkKK4c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;Count on Me&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0by Bruno Mars<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=VdQY7BusJNU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;Time After Time&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0by Cyndi Lauper<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Between first conditional and second conditional<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymotion.com\/video\/x5xl9vo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;If Tomorrow Never Comes&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0by Garth Brooks<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Second conditional<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=AWpsOqh8q0M\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;If I Were a Boy&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0by Beyonce<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=lD4sxxoJGkA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;Wouldn&#8217;t It Be Nice?&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0by The Beach Boys<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=dzeuvHencto\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;If I Had a Million Dollars&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0by Barenaked Ladies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Between second conditional and third conditional<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=zhDQeQ7OpzY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;It Wouldn&#8217;t Have Made Any Difference&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0by Todd Rundgren<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Third conditional<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=cpN11Df6fSg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;If It Hadn&#8217;t Been for Love&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0by Adele<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymotion.com\/video\/x2zljv3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;If I&#8217;d Been the One&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0by 38 Special<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Wishes<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=UO6R276hBeM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;I Wish I Had an Evil Twin&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0by Magnetic Fields<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=eIJgORcKz8k\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;Wishlist&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0by Pearl Jam<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Ideas to incorporate songs into class<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Put yourself in the singer&#8217;s shoes.<\/strong>\u00a0Have your students use conditionals to talk about what the singer was feeling, what he\/she might do or what might have happened to him\/her.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Put yourself in the listener&#8217;s shoes.<\/strong> Same as above, but have your students do it from the perspective of the person the singer is singing to.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Complete the conditions or results.<\/strong> After identifying the conditions or results in the song, have your students complete their own responses or conditions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>ESL Classroom Activities with Quotes Using Conditionals<\/h2>\n<p>I really like using quotes in my classes, and I&#8217;ve noticed that many contain\u00a0conditionals. Due to the nature of conditionals, the English level in such quotes tends to be higher.<\/p>\n<p>These kinds of activities can\u00a0be very rewarding, since they can lead the class in new directions, including discussions about the people who said the quotes, interpretations and debates about the quotes, viewpoints regarding philosophy and many other discussions\u00a0that lower-level topics aren&#8217;t conducive to.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some activities that I like to do to incorporate quotations with conditionals into my classes.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Matching<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Print a large number of quotations\u2014between 20 and 30 quotes seems to work best\u2014and cut them into two parts each, dividing the conditions and the results.<\/p>\n<p>You can also mix different conditional tenses to make it more or less challenging. Have students match the two halves of the quotes.<\/p>\n<p>You can also expand the activity by\u00a0having them find information about the person who said it, argue for or against the quote or do a different activity to increase participation. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brainyquote.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BrainyQuote.com<\/a> has hundreds of quotes that use conditionals, but here are a few I like to include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>(First half A): <em>Even if I knew that tomorrow the world would go to pieces, &#8230;<\/em><\/li>\n<li>(Second half A): <em>&#8230;I would still plant my apple tree.\u00a0<\/em>&#8211; Martin Luther<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>(First half B): <em>If you have no critics, &#8230;<\/em><\/li>\n<li>(Second half B): <em>&#8230;you&#8217;ll likely have no success.\u00a0<\/em>&#8211; Malcolm X<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>(First half C): <em>I have found the paradox, that if you love until it hurts, &#8230;<\/em><\/li>\n<li>(Second half C): <em>&#8230;there can be no more hurt, only more love.\u00a0<\/em>&#8211; Mother Teresa<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Scrambled quotes<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Print and cut a quote into pieces, and have students arrange it in the correct order. You can have\u00a0each word on a separate bit of paper, or have phrases of a few words on every piece. For lower levels, you can also cut it up like a puzzle.<\/p>\n<p>One of my favorite quotes is by Pablo Picasso and uses the first conditional in a way that&#8217;s clear and repetitive, which helps reinforce the structure:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>My mother said to me, &#8220;If you are a soldier, you will become a general. If you are a monk, you will become the Pope.&#8221; Instead, I was a painter, and became Picasso.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Dictations<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Have students work in pairs or groups of three. Give a quote to one student, who has to tell it to the second student. The second student then has to run across the room and tell the quote to the third student, who writes it down piece by piece.<\/p>\n<p>You can also have them do a dictation back-to-back or, if you&#8217;re daring and feel like riding a wave of barely-controlled chaos, have them say\/shout the quote across the room to their partners.<\/p>\n<p>A good example here is a quote by Sidonie Gabrielle Colette, which is partially fun just because her name is challenging to spell:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>What a wonderful life I&#8217;ve had! I only wish I&#8217;d realized it sooner.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Completing quotes<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Perhaps\u00a0you remember the game <a href=\"http:\/\/www.madlibs.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mad Libs<\/a>. In that game, you had a story with multiple blanks, and you only knew what part of speech was missing (e.g., you&#8217;d need to say an adverb, and the person taking notes would write the adverb you said into the story).<\/p>\n<p>The result was often bizarre or nearly incomprehensible, but every now and then, it was hilarious.<\/p>\n<p>How about an example? <a href=\"https:\/\/s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com\/236x\/d3\/93\/ee\/d393ee8bb5cb3a4c60103052ab8fd5cf.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Here<\/a> is a longer quote that you can convert for this game, but really any quote can work.
