But all those unique characteristics can be used to your advantage when it comes to learning the language.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s take a look at how we can practice tones and create questions with the Chinese <em>ma.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>[fluentu-toc]<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h2>Learning the Four Tones with <em>Ma<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>If you are learning Mandarin as a speaker of a non-tonal language, such as English, you first need to get familiar with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/chinese\/chinese-tones\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the four tones<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><lite-youtube videoid=\"qgL7NrduGJc\"><\/lite-youtube><\/p>\n<p><strong>Let&#8217;s get acquainted with these four tones using our base word<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong><em>ma.<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0You will notice that different tones yield different meanings of this word.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>First tone.<\/strong> This tone is pronounced with a high and flat pitch. Keep your voice steady; your pitch does not need to be unnaturally high, though it helps to exaggerate all of these tones when you are first learning.\n<ul>\n<li>Example: <strong>\u5988<\/strong>\u00a0<em>(m\u0101)<\/em> \u2014 mother<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Second tone.<\/strong> This is a rising tone. Start at a neutral pitch; your voice should rise until it matches the pitch of your first tone.\n<ul>\n<li>Example: <strong>\u9ebb<\/strong>\u00a0<em>(m\u00e1)<\/em> \u2014 hemp.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Third tone.<\/strong> This tone dips low before rising again.\n<ul>\n<li>Example: <strong>\u9a6c<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><em>(m\u01ce)<\/em> \u2014 horse.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fourth tone.<\/strong> This tone starts at the neutral tone or slightly higher, then falls sharply.\n<ul>\n<li>Example: <strong>\u9a82<\/strong>\u00a0<em>(m\u00e0)<\/em> \u2014 to scold.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fifth or neutral tone.<\/strong> Some words in Mandarin do not have a tone; they are toneless, or neutral.\n<ul>\n<li>Example: <strong>\u5417<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><em>(ma<\/em><em>) <\/em>\u2014 particle indicating a question.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Sometimes the tones are marked with numbers instead of the usual pinyin marks. They&#8217;re simple to learn:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>First tone: <em>m\u0101<\/em>, ma1<\/li>\n<li>Second tone: <em>m\u00e1<\/em>, ma2<\/li>\n<li>Third tone: <em>m\u01ce<\/em>, ma3<\/li>\n<li>Fourth tone: <em>m\u00e0<\/em>, ma4<\/li>\n<li>Neutral tone: <em>ma<\/em>, ma<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The neutral tone is frequently left unnumbered<\/strong> when it appears in\u00a0<em>pinyin<\/em>. However, you may occasionally see it written as <em>ma5<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>A strong command of these tone mark denotations will help your reading fluency and speaking accuracy. However, you do not need to force yourself to keep a monotonous pitch.<\/p>\n<p>If your vocal pitch naturally wants to rise a little as you ask a question (like it does in American English), feel free to allow the same to happen in Chinese.<\/p>\n<p>You will become more comfortable with this as you practice your Chinese listening and speaking!<\/p>\n<h2><em>Ma<\/em> Tongue Twisters for Practicing Tones and Questions<\/h2>\n<p>In addition to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/chinese\/2017\/07\/26\/learn-chinese-videos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">watching videos<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/chinese\/best-website-to-learn-chinese\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">finding an online Mandarin tutor<\/a>, you need a quick way to remember and practice your tones.<\/p>\n<p>Why not <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/chinese\/chinese-tongue-twisters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">try a <strong>\u7ed5\u53e3\u4ee4<\/strong>\u00a0<em>(r\u00e0o k\u01d2u l\u00ecng) <\/em>\u2014 tongue twister<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>The tongue twister that we saw at the start of this article, in particular, is popular amongst Chinese learners all around the world.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s how it goes:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>\u5988\u5988\u9a91\u9a6c\u3002\u9a6c\u6162\u3002\u5988\u5988\u9a82\u9a6c\u3002<br \/>\n<\/strong><em>(M\u0101 m\u0101 q\u00ed m\u01ce. M\u01ce m\u00e0n. M\u0101 m\u0101 m\u00e0 m\u01ce.)<br \/>\n<\/em>Mother rides a horse. The horse is slow. Mother scolds the horse.<\/p>\n<p>This tongue twister manages to fit three of the four <em>ma<\/em> words we learned earlier into two grammatically correct sentences. The second tone also makes an appearance through the word \u9a91 (<em>q\u00ed <\/em>\u2014 to ride).<\/p>\n<p>With a little practice, you will be well on your way to navigating smoothly between the four tones.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to this popular riddle, we can also make our own tongue twister by turning those sentences into questions!<\/p>\n<p>Each clause in the previous tongue twister can stand alone as its own sentence.
