Maybe you&#8217;re not sure how to approach it, or you figured it&#8217;s something they&#8217;ll pick up themselves?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ve come to the right place.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this article, we\u2019ll show you <strong>how to teach the schwa sound<\/strong> <strong>effectively<\/strong> and why its pronunciation should be a priority for all your students.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Why It\u2019s Important to Teach the Schwa Sound<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, why\u2019s it important to dedicate time to schwa pronunciation?<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s the most common vowel sound in English.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Awareness of the schwa will help develop good pronunciation habits.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>English is a stress-timed language<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and many learners often don\u2019t notice unstressed auxiliaries, which leads to mistakes like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cwhat you do?\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201che coming now!\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. You can help your students avoid that with adequate schwa practice.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Practicing the schwa sound may not lead to an immediate improvement in listening skills or pronunciation, but it helps build the vital foundation and eventually <\/span><b>contributes significantly to their fluency and listening skills.<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><strong>How to Teach the Schwa Sound<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A quick note: I&#8217;m a fan of the ESA method of teaching\u2014engage, study, activate\u2014so I&#8217;ve structured this post in that manner. The ESA method is just one of many and by no means the best, as each student and teacher is different.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h3><b>Engage: open with a warmer activity to engage students<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A class often only finishes as well as it started. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3044328\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studies have shown<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that an emotional response helps us to learn and remember more. So if your students aren&#8217;t engaged from the get-go, they&#8217;re not going to get as much out of the lesson as they could.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teaching the schwa sound is no exception to that.<\/span><b> In fact, a warmer activity could be seen as doubly important when introducing the schwa<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, since it&#8217;s a source of much confusion and frustration for some students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It would help to open the class by spiking your student&#8217;s interest by telling them that this pronunciation-focused class will have a massive impact on their overall fluency down the line.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Try to show an engaging phrase\u2014something silly, funny, or thought-provoking\u2014 containing several schwas (of different vowels) and read it aloud once or twice.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Give your students a moment to think about it, then cross out the &#8220;reduced&#8221; vowels and get them to read it out loud a few times.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Explain what they just did and introduce the schwa sound.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You could also try some of these other common warmers to get your students engaged:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Catch-up. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The simplest warmer! Just catch up with your students for five minutes and discuss what you&#8217;ve been up to since the last class.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Finish the thought<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Write the beginning of a sentence on the whiteboard and ask students to complete it.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Just a Minute.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Write a random topic that the students have to talk about for 60 seconds without stopping.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><b>Study: explaining the schwa sound<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>Let&#8217;s be more like the schwa. It&#8217;s never stressed!<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now&#8217;s the time to explain that the schwa is seen in two ways:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As an unstressed syllable of a multi-syllable word.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a reduced vowel sound in a function word.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Give examples of both by showing words and phrases with the schwa syllable underlined.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some to get you going:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Th<\/span><\/i><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b><i>e<\/i><\/b><\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> m<\/span><\/i><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b><i>a<\/i><\/b><\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">jor<\/span><\/i><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><em>i<\/em><\/strong><\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ty of peopl<\/span><\/i><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b><i>e<\/i><\/b><\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> I know want short<\/span><\/i><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b><i>e<\/i><\/b><\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">r working hours.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We&#8217;re going t<\/span><\/i><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b><i>o<\/i><\/b><\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> need <\/span><\/i><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b><i>a<\/i><\/b><\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> large quant<\/span><\/i><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b><i>i<\/i><\/b><\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ty <\/span><\/i><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b><i>o<\/i><\/b><\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">f food t<\/span><\/i><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b><i>o<\/i><\/b><\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> feed th<\/span><\/i><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b><i>i<\/i><\/b><\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s many peopl<\/span><\/i><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b><i>e<\/i><\/b><\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We&#8217;r<\/span><\/i><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b><i>e<\/i><\/b><\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> having s<\/span><\/i><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b><i>o<\/i><\/b><\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">me technic<\/span><\/i><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b><i>a<\/i><\/b><\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">l diffic<\/span><\/i><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b><i>u<\/i><\/b><\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lties. Please bear with <\/span><\/i><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b><i>u<\/i><\/b><\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s important to stress to your students that any vowel can become the schwa. It depends on whether that particular vowel is stressed or not <\/span><b>because the schwa is never the stressed syllable.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here you can show some words with different vowels as the schwa to help drill the importance of proper stress.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some words to use:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">woman, elephant, pencil, carrot, support.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here&#8217;s a phrase to get your students thinking:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She&#8217;s content with the content I&#8217;ve been producing lately.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here you can explain the importance of stress on opposite syllables to <\/span><b>differentiate two words that are spelled the same.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At this point, it&#8217;d be good to give the students a worksheet or activity that requires them to mark the schwa vowel in a list of words and phrases.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Drill with fast dictation<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the risk of boring your students, or information overload, it&#8217;s important to <\/span><b>start drilling the schwa sound<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during the study phase of the lesson.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dictate some phrases at regular speed and tell the students to write whatever they hear and that you won&#8217;t repeat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Needless to say, you should <\/span><b>tailor the phrases to the level of the students<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so pre-intermediate would be best with present simple phrases, and so on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allow the students a few minutes to compare in pairs, then correct them, making sure they pay attention to the corrections and remember them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Be sure to maintain natural sentence stress while drilling<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Although it&#8217;s done with good intention, there&#8217;s a risk of giving the schwa too much emphasis and confusing your students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some example phrases :<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I have <\/span><b>a<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> carr<\/span><b>o<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">t <\/span><b>a<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nd <\/span><b>a<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> banan<\/span><b>a<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I w<\/span><b>a<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s sitting <\/span><b>a<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lone on the sof<\/span><b>a<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when she <\/span><b>a<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rrived.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fath<\/span><b>e<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">r went <\/span><b>a<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">round the <\/span><b>a<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">partment.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><b>Ask some questions to raise awareness<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can use the last chunk of the study phase to test the students on what they&#8217;ve learned so far.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be mindful of tailoring the questions to the points you&#8217;ve actually taught so the students don&#8217;t feel like they&#8217;ve misunderstood something and become discouraged.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some questions you can ask to solidify their understanding of schwa:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why is it so important to use the schwa?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do we make the sound?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What kinds of words are stressed? (Content words, i.e., nouns, main verbs, adjectives, adverbs)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What words are not stressed? (&#8216;Grammar words,&#8217; i.e., auxiliary verbs, pronouns, articles, linkers, prepositions)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do stressed syllables ever have the schwa? (No)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><b>Activate: putting the schwa to work<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Activating your students at the end of the class will help you know how well they&#8217;ve understood the material discussed during class.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This portion of the class should be purely interactive and heavily focused on speaking, so your students can freely use their new skills without being bogged down with worksheets and corrections.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some activation activities you can try:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Write phrases and practice in pairs. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students can then swap phrases and practice the vocabulary of their peers.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Role-playing. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A great way to focus the vocabulary on a particular topic, and students are free to create whatever dialogue they want.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Debates. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everybody has a competitive side, so debating may work well with your students if their vocabulary permits it.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Just chat!<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Since the schwa isn&#8217;t tied to any particular grammar rule or vocabulary, try just letting your students speak freely for a while. Often students feel the most comfortable when there&#8217;s less at stake.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of your students will likely be more determined than others, while some will revert to full-vowel pronunciation after drilling.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is normal, and you should expect it to happen. Either way, they&#8217;ve had their preconceptions of English pronunciation changed, and what they&#8217;ve learned about schwa pronunciation will eventually stick as it should. <\/span><b>Because some exposure to something is often better than none at all.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be sure to give your students a short task or worksheet to complete at home so they can return to the topic after a brief pause and help solidify the information.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And most importantly, have fun with it!
