The lyrics use <strong>words and phrases from philosophy<\/strong> (the study of who we are and why we exist).<\/p>\n<p>For instance, <em>Socratic<\/em> refers to the ancient Greek philosopher Socrates. Can you hear both meanings?<\/p>\n<p>Some slang terms include <em>&#8220;in my zone,&#8221;<\/em> meaning that you are completely focused on what you&#8217;re doing. The phrase <em>&#8220;creeping up on you&#8221;<\/em> means that something happens so slowly that you don&#8217;t notice it happening. This is meant to be a metaphor\u2014a statement used to represent a different meaning.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, the singer isn&#8217;t actually getting hurt, but the pain he shows in the video represents how <strong>he feels hurt inside because his lover is leaving him.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You can also understand this message through different parts of the lyrics. <em>&#8220;Cut deeper than a knife&#8221;<\/em> means that something you can&#8217;t touch hurts more than a knife cut. There&#8217;s also the word <em>aching<\/em>, which means to hurt a lot or for a long time, and the title word <em>stitches<\/em>\u2014what doctors use to close up a big cut.<\/p>\n<h2>22. &#8220;Heathens&#8221; by Twenty One Pilots<\/h2>\n<p><lite-youtube videoid=\"UprcpdwuwCg\"><\/lite-youtube><\/p>\n<p>This song was written for the 2016 movie &#8220;Suicide Squad.&#8221; It&#8217;s <strong>a dark-sounding pop song<\/strong> that says you should be careful who you trust, because you never know who the person next to you really is.<\/p>\n<p>The song was written for the movie, so it&#8217;s actually about murderers. But you can also understand the lyrics to be about the band&#8217;s fans, or even about the church. Listen to the lyrics and see what they mean to you.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some words and phrases to help you understand the song better:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Heathen<\/em> \u2014 Someone bad or uncivilized; usually used in religious contexts<\/li>\n<li><em>Docked away<\/em> \u2014 Put away; stored<\/li>\n<li><em>Psychopath<\/em> \u2014\u00a0 Used as a slang term for someone who seems or acts crazy<\/li>\n<li><em>Intention<\/em> \u2014 Why you do something<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>23. &#8220;All My Friends&#8221; by Snakehips ft. This song is about what happens when <strong>the singer doesn&#8217;t enjoy the party,<\/strong> and goes back to someone she&#8217;s not in a relationship with anymore.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s mild cursing (bad words) in this song, but also some great words to learn:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Waver<\/em> \u2014 Hesitate (wait)<\/li>\n<li><em>Wasted<\/em> \u2014 Slang for being very drunk<\/li>\n<li><em>Polar opposite<\/em> \u2014 Completely different than something else<\/li>\n<li><em>Propaganda<\/em> \u2014 Usually false information used to make people think a certain way<\/li>\n<li><em>Treachery<\/em> \u2014 Betrayal (go against someone&#8217;s trust)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>24. &#8220;Here&#8221; by Alessia Cara<\/h2>\n<p><lite-youtube videoid=\"UKp2CrfmVfw\"><\/lite-youtube><\/p>\n<p>Alessia Cara would prefer not to party at all. This song is about what it&#8217;s like to be at a party when <strong>you would rather be at home.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>She uses the word <em>indifferent<\/em> to say how she feels, meaning that she doesn&#8217;t really care. The word <em>congregating<\/em> means to gather in a group, and the word <em>standoffish<\/em> means to seem unfriendly.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe you agree, and you would prefer to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/english\/teach-yourself-english\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stay home<\/a> instead of going out to party, too!<\/p>\n<h2>25. &#8220;Friday I&#8217;m in Love&#8221; by The Cure<\/h2>\n<p><lite-youtube videoid=\"cy9AugxOEwg\"><\/lite-youtube><\/p>\n<p>One of the first things that most people learn in a new language are days of the week. If you can&#8217;t talk about the days of the week, it&#8217;s almost impossible to make plans or to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/english\/blog\/daily-routine-vocabulary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">talk about your routines<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Whether you think the days of the week are easy or hard to learn, you can still enjoy this classic &#8217;80s song by The Cure. Some of the lyrics are a bit confusing (at least for me), but at least the days of the week are in the correct order so you won&#8217;t get them confused!<\/p>\n<p>Generally the days of the week aren&#8217;t especially difficult to learn, but some of my students do have difficulties pronouncing &#8220;Wednesday&#8221; and &#8220;Thursday,&#8221; and they often confuse Tuesday and Thursday because they look similar.<\/p>\n<h2>26. &#8220;We&#8217;re Going to Be Friends&#8221; by The White Stripes<\/h2>\n<p><lite-youtube videoid=\"PKfD8d3XJok\"><\/lite-youtube><\/p>\n<p>This song is\u00a0a reminder of what it&#8217;s like to be young and innocent.<\/p>\n<p>It has a really simple sound and the lyrics talk about things that children do at school. For example, it\u00a0talks about learning how to spell, and it also mentions things like books, pens and uniforms.<\/p>\n<p>The video for the original version of this song\u00a0(shown above) is okay, but it just shows a guy (Jack White) playing guitar while a girl (Meg White) rests\u00a0on a\u00a0sofa.<\/p>\n<p>If you want a video that&#8217;s a bit more visual, check out the Jack Johnson version of the song with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=AqfCfUQxM4I\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a fan-made video<\/a> that has a lot of pictures of the vocabulary in the song.<\/p>\n<h2>27. &#8220;You&#8217;re My Best Friend&#8221; by Queen<\/h2>\n<p><lite-youtube videoid=\"HaZpZQG2z10\"><\/lite-youtube><\/p>\n<p>There are probably millions of love songs, but there seem to be fewer songs about friendship.<\/p>\n<p>Well, even though this song has &#8220;best friend&#8221; in the title, it&#8217;s more about a romantic friendship.<\/p>\n<p>In the lyrics, Queen&#8217;s singer Freddie Mercury sings about how sometimes things get difficult, but his friend is always there to help him when he needs it. It&#8217;s about faithfulness (being consistent and staying together with someone). Freddie sings that his friend has &#8220;stood by&#8221; him &#8220;in rain or shine,&#8221; which is another way of saying that they supported and helped him during bad times (rain) and good times (shine, sunshine).<\/p>\n<p>So, this song is a nice reminder about what friends should do for each other.<\/p>\n<h2>28. &#8220;I&#8217;ve Been Everywhere&#8221; by Johnny Cash<\/h2>\n<p><lite-youtube videoid=\"ov4epAJRPMw\"><\/lite-youtube><\/p>\n<p>Johnny Cash was a singer known for singing country songs about criminals and people who had difficult lives. Johnny <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/I%27ve_Been_Everywhere\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">didn&#8217;t actually write this song<\/a>, but his version is the most famous one.<\/p>\n<p>In it, he tells a story from the perspective of a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hitchhiking\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">hitchhiker<\/a> (a person who tries to get a ride on the side of the road). A truck picks up the hitchhiker, and the hitchhiker then tells the driver about all the different places he&#8217;s been.<\/p>\n<p>The lyrics are really\u00a0fast, but that&#8217;s part of the fun. He lists around 100\u00a0cities, states and countries, and you can see how many you can understand. The vocabulary for different places is interesting, but it&#8217;s also good because you can notice how he rhymes different place names (for example, &#8220;Oklahoma&#8221; rhymes with &#8220;La Paloma&#8221; and &#8220;Colorado&#8221; rhymes with &#8220;Eldorado&#8221;).<\/p>\n<h2>29. &#8220;Just a Girl&#8221; by No Doubt<\/h2>\n<p><lite-youtube videoid=\"PHzOOQfhPFg\"><\/lite-youtube><\/p>\n<p>There are many different songs about how society treats men and women differently.<\/p>\n<p>Pink&#8217;s song <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=BR4yQFZK9YM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;Stupid Girls&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0is a good related song, and Lady Antebellum even has another completely different song that&#8217;s also called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=i79erQ7BHjQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;Just a Girl.&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0And Beyonce&#8217;s song &#8220;If I Were a Boy&#8221; is excellent, but we&#8217;ll be talking about it later in this article. But personally, this No Doubt song is my favorite one\u00a0to use in classes when we talk about gender issues.<\/p>\n<p>In this song, Gwen Stefani (the singer) sings about how she&#8217;s frustrated because society thinks that women are weak and that people treat women like they&#8217;re helpless. She uses good vocabulary to express that frustration, saying that people stare (look at her continually) at her like she&#8217;s in captivity.<\/p>\n<h2>30. &#8220;Bad Luck&#8221; by Social Distortion<\/h2>\n<p><lite-youtube videoid=\"tQOJY4NXYzM\"><\/lite-youtube><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m always surprised at the conversations we have in class when we talk about superstitions. It&#8217;s an interesting cultural topic, and there&#8217;s a lot of good vocabulary related to superstitions.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, there are also other songs about superstitions, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=0CFuCYNx-1g\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;Superstition&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0by Stevie Wonder and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.azlyrics.com\/lyrics\/europe\/superstitious.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;Superstitious&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0by Europe. The Stevie Wonder song&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.azlyrics.com\/lyrics\/steviewonder\/superstition.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lyrics<\/a> do talk about some things related to superstitions, but the Europe song is more about how the singer is\u00a0<em>not<\/em> superstitious.<\/p>\n<p>The lyrics for this song focus a bit more on\u00a0luck than on superstition, but there&#8217;s still a lot of good vocabulary. The singer talks about how he always loses in poker, pool and life in general, and he mentions superstitions\u00a0like black cats, broken mirrors and how he always &#8220;sings the blues&#8221; (which means that he&#8217;s always sad).<\/p>\n<h2>31. &#8220;Black or White&#8221; by Michael Jackson<\/h2>\n<p><lite-youtube videoid=\"F2AitTPI5U0\"><\/lite-youtube><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll admit it: I&#8217;ve always liked this song\u2014the Michael Jackson album &#8220;Dangerous&#8221; was the first cassette I bought with my own money!\u2014but I never really understood the lyrics until recently when a student played the song in class.<\/p>\n<p>The message is\u00a0clear. It doesn&#8217;t matter if you&#8217;re black or white or any other color.\u00a0We&#8217;re all equal. The lyrics are a bit difficult to understand (even for a native speaker like me) but the message is maybe a bit more obvious when you watch the video. There are many helpful images that will improve your understanding in the video.<\/p>\n<p>If you can tolerate\u00a0the first two minutes of the video, then the song starts and it shows Michael Jackson dancing and singing throughout the world with all kinds of different people. At the end of the video, it shows people morphing (transforming) into people with different skin colors and genders.<\/p>\n<h2>32. &#8220;Don&#8217;t Mug Yourself&#8221; by The Streets<\/h2>\n<p><lite-youtube videoid=\"veAIHDGghP4\"><\/lite-youtube><\/p>\n<p>The song &#8220;Don&#8217;t Mug Yourself,&#8221; and basically anything else by the rapper called The Streets, is <em>really<\/em> British, at least to my American ears. But that means it&#8217;s\u00a0a good example if you want to hear and see more about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/english\/blog\/differences-between-american-and-british-english\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the differences between British English and American English<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In the song, the singer talks about how he&#8217;s going to call a girl he likes, but his friend is warning him that he shouldn&#8217;t mug himself (do something to make himself look foolish or stupid).<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s interesting to hear the pronunciation, and there&#8217;s a lot of good slang and vocabulary in the lyrics, but just be aware that there are some bad words.<\/p>\n<p>Two (clean)\u00a0words\u00a0that are common in British English, but not American English, are the words &#8220;fancy&#8221; for &#8220;like&#8221; (when you like a person romantically) and &#8220;oi&#8221; (an expression to interrupt or get someone&#8217;s attention).<\/p>\n<h2>33. &#8220;Dust in the Wind&#8221; by Kansas<\/h2>\n<p><lite-youtube videoid=\"tH2w6Oxx0kQ\"><\/lite-youtube><\/p>\n<p>You probably already know the present simple tense (also called &#8220;simple present&#8221;). It&#8217;s one of the first structures most people learn in English, and\u00a0we use it\u00a0to talk about things that happen commonly or frequently in the present or to talk about characteristics of people or things.<\/p>\n<p>This song is about how we can&#8217;t control life or death, and eventually, everything turns into dust. Almost all of the lyrics are\u00a0in present simple, but some clear examples are lines like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>All my dreams pass before my eyes<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Don&#8217;t hang on, nothing lasts forever<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>34. &#8220;Since You&#8217;ve Been Gone&#8221; by The Outfield<\/h2>\n<p><lite-youtube videoid=\"XiMineG1w3U\"><\/lite-youtube><\/p>\n<p>This song is about a guy who misses\u00a0someone who left, and he sings about what he has been doing since that person left.<\/p>\n<p>This song is also great for learning an English tense called &#8220;present perfect.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>We use the present perfect tense to talk about things that started in the past and are still happening now.\u00a0It&#8217;s common to contract the subject (like &#8220;I,&#8221; &#8220;you&#8221; or &#8220;we&#8221;) and the verb &#8220;have&#8221; (for example, saying &#8220;I&#8217;ve&#8221; instead of &#8220;I have&#8221;) and that happens a lot in this song&#8217;s lyrics.<\/p>\n<p>There are also some other great songs that use this structure, such as U2&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.u2.com\/media\/player\/105\/16\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;I Still Haven&#8217;t Found What I&#8217;m Looking For.&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>35.<strong>\u00a0&#8220;And She Was&#8221; by Talking Heads\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><lite-youtube videoid=\"ZV9DNpkfak0\"><\/lite-youtube><\/p>\n<p>There are actually a couple different continuous (also called &#8220;progressive&#8221;) tenses in English. There are continuous tenses for the past, present and future, and there&#8217;s also the perfect continuous for the past, present and future.<\/p>\n<p>That\u00a0gets\u00a0complicated, so I chose a\u00a0song that mainly uses\u00a0the present continuous (with a form of the verb &#8220;to be&#8221; in the present and a verb ending in -ing) and the past continuous\u00a0(with a form of the verb &#8220;to be&#8221; in the past\u00a0and a verb ending in -ing).<\/p>\n<p>Some examples of\u00a0the present continuous in the song are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong>She&#8217;s making<\/strong> sure she is not dreaming <\/em>(two examples)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Now <strong>she&#8217;s starting<\/strong> to rise<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And some examples of\u00a0the past continuous are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>She <strong>was lying<\/strong> in the grass<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em>The world<strong> was moving<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em>She <strong>was drifting<\/strong> through the backyard<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>36. &#8220;Summer of &#8217;69&#8221; by Bryan Adams<\/h2>\n<p><lite-youtube videoid=\"9f06QZCVUHg\"><\/lite-youtube><\/p>\n<p>We use the past simple tense to describe things that started and finished in the past. In other words, these are completed actions. The past simple is one of the first things that intermediate students learn because it&#8217;s so common.<\/p>\n<p>The main difficulty that many students have is remembering the past forms of the irregular verbs in English. If you&#8217;re not sure what those are, regular verbs end with an &#8220;-ed&#8221; in the past forms, but irregular verbs have many different forms in the past.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.englishpage.com\/irregularverbs\/irregularverbs.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">There are charts of most of the irregular verbs in English<\/a>, but you just have to just practice them and memorize them over time. Fortunately, there are also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/english\/blog\/english-irregular-verbs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">some tricks to help you<\/a>\u00a0learn irregular verbs.<\/p>\n<p>In this song, Bryan is remembering the past and what he and his friends did when he was younger. Some of the song is in the present but a lot of it takes place in the past.<\/p>\n<h2>37. &#8220;Ready to Run&#8221; by The Dixie Chicks<\/h2>\n<p><lite-youtube videoid=\"L2ksenLQ_RE\"><\/lite-youtube><\/p>\n<p>I chose &#8220;Ready to Run&#8221; by the Dixie Chicks because it uses a few forms of the future tense, but I&#8217;d also recommend <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=KHpJhS99Q60\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;The Land of Hopes and Dreams&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0by Bruce Springsteen.<\/p>\n<p>Some examples of the future in\u00a0&#8220;Ready to Run&#8221; are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>I&#8217;m gonna be ready<\/em> (the &#8220;going to&#8221; form, which is informally pronounced\u00a0&#8220;gonna&#8221; sometimes)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em>I&#8217;ll buy a ticket to anywhere<\/em> (future simple)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>38. &#8220;We Can Work It Out&#8221; by The Beatles\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><lite-youtube videoid=\"Qyclqo_AV2M\"><\/lite-youtube><\/p>\n<p>Modal verbs (also called &#8220;modal auxiliaries&#8221; or simply &#8220;modals&#8221;) can be tricky, mainly because they can mean different things.<\/p>\n<p>Briefly, a modal verb is a word that you put before a verb to indicate things like possibility, obligation, permission, etc. Common modal verbs are\u00a0<strong>can, will, must, may, should, need to, have to<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>might<\/strong>, but there are others.<\/p>\n<p>Because they&#8217;re so essential, almost every song has at least one modal verb. One I like to use in classes is &#8220;We Can Work It Out&#8221;\u00a0by The Beatles. Some examples of modals in that song include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Do I have to keep on talking till I can&#8217;t go on?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Our love may soon be gone<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em>We can work it out<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Only time will tell if I am right<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>39. &#8220;Thinking Out Loud&#8221; by Ed Sheeran<\/h2>\n<p><lite-youtube videoid=\"lp-EO5I60KA\"><\/lite-youtube><\/p>\n<p>We use the first conditional to talk about real possibilities, usually in the future. Normally, the condition is in the present tense and the result is in the future.<\/p>\n<p>When talking about this in class, I like to use the song <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=VdQY7BusJNU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;Time After Time&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0by Cyndi Lauper but my students especially like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=lp-EO5I60KA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;Thinking Out Loud&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0by Ed Sheeran. In this song, Ed sings\u00a0to a person he loves, wondering how things will be in the future. Some examples of the first conditional in the song are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>When my hands don&#8217;t play the strings the same way, I know you will still love me the same<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em>When your legs don&#8217;t work like they used to before [&#8230;], will your eyes still smile from your cheeks?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>40. &#8220;If I Were A Boy&#8221; by Beyonc\u00e9<\/h2>\n<p><lite-youtube videoid=\"AWpsOqh8q0M\"><\/lite-youtube><\/p>\n<p>We use the second conditional to express unreal (imaginary) possibilities and results about the present. It&#8217;s a bit confusing because the condition is in the simple past and the result uses &#8220;would&#8221; plus a verb.<\/p>\n<p>For example, you could say &#8220;If I were tall, I would be uncomfortable in my small car.&#8221; In this example, the reality is that I have a small car and I&#8217;m not tall; I&#8217;m just imagining a different reality.<\/p>\n<p>A really great song for this is &#8220;If I Were A Boy&#8221; by Beyonc\u00e9. She imagines what she would do if she were a boy and how society would treat her differently. Basically, the entire song is a big second conditional sentence.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>41. &#8220;If It Hadn&#8217;t Been For Love&#8221; by Adele<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><lite-youtube videoid=\"xTp0ZLRKjNc\"><\/lite-youtube><\/p>\n<p>The third conditional is used to talk about actions in the past\u2014but it&#8217;s unreal, meaning that we&#8217;re imagining different conditions and results\u00a0that didn&#8217;t actually happen. This structure is pretty advanced, and it&#8217;s one of the trickiest things for my students to learn.<\/p>\n<p>Adele&#8217;s song &#8220;If It Hadn&#8217;t Been For Love&#8221;\u00a0(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=YSzlV6VNqI4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the original version by the Steeldrivers<\/a>\u00a0is\u00a0also great) uses this structure to talk about a woman who killed her lover. She&#8217;s singing from jail, talking about how and why she killed him. Almost the whole song is in third conditional, but you can see examples in these verses:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>[I] never woulda hitchhiked to Birmingham if it hadn&#8217;t been for love<\/em> (&#8220;woulda&#8221; is an informal way to say &#8220;would have&#8221;)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em>[I] woulda been gone like a wayward wind if it hadn&#8217;t been for love<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>42. &#8220;Hope You Never&#8221; by Tom Petty<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><lite-youtube videoid=\"hUnJzeoPpuE\"><\/lite-youtube><\/p>\n<p>One common way to talk about hopes is to use two names or subjects. In that structure, the first\u00a0person is doing the hope and the second person is the topic of that hope. For example, I can say &#8220;I hope I pass my exam.&#8221; I can also say &#8220;I hope <strong>she\u00a0<\/strong>pass<strong>es<\/strong> her exam.&#8221; Notice that in both of these, the verbs are in the simple present.<\/p>\n<p>A good song that uses hope phrases is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=hUnJzeoPpuE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;Hope You Never&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0by Tom Petty. Think of the Justin Bieber version of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=whwe0KD_rGw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;Despacito.&#8221;<\/a> <\/em>Just make sure to choose an English song that you love listening to for this activity!<\/li>\n<li><strong>What&#8217;s the Story?:<\/strong> Watch the music video and try to guess the meaning of the song. Then, look at the lyrics word by word and compare each line to the music video. Try it out with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=VuNIsY6JdUw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Taylor Swift&#8217;s &#8220;You Belong With Me&#8221;<\/a> here.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lyric Hunt:<\/strong> Songs are full of expressions and slang.
