Accounts<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Account\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Accounts<\/a> are the records of all financial transactions, including expenses and receipts, of an organization or an individual.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>Sheila needs to check her <strong>accounts<\/strong> to see if she can afford the new house.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>2. Balance Sheet<\/h3>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/investinganswers.com\/dictionary\/b\/balance-sheet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">balance sheet<\/a> is a statement of a company\u2019s assets, liabilities and capital at a specific point in time. It&#8217;s also called a statement of financial condition. An organization\u2019s balance sheet gives an idea of how much they own and owe, as well as the amount invested by shareholders.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>One look at the <strong>balance sheet<\/strong> told Arjun that the company wasn\u2019t worth investing in.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>3. Capital Gains Tax\u00a0(CGT)<\/h3>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/c\/capital_gains_tax.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">capital gains tax<\/a> is the amount of tax that is payable on the profit from the sale of a capital asset (either a property or an investment).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>Before you sell off the old farmhouse, keep in mind the <strong>capital gains tax<\/strong> that you&#8217;ll have to pay.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>4. Deflation<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/d\/deflation.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Deflation<\/a> is the opposite of inflation; it&#8217;s the reduction in the supply of circulated money in any economy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>The recent <strong>deflation<\/strong>, brought on by government policies, decreased the prices, but the wages went down as well.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>5. Earnings Per Share\u00a0(EPS)<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/e\/eps.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Earnings per share<\/a> is the net income of a company, divided by its number of outstanding shares. EPS indicates a company\u2019s profitability.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>Mark\u2019s team decided to join the company because of the company&#8217;s increasing <strong>earnings per share<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>6. Financial Year \/ Fiscal Year<\/h3>\n<p>Financial or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/f\/fiscalyear.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">fiscal year<\/a> refers to a period of 12 consecutive months or 52 consecutive weeks, after which financial reports are prepared. It may not match with a calendar year. In the U.S. it&#8217;s called a <strong>fiscal year <\/strong>and is also sometimes called a <strong>tax year<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>The next <strong>fiscal year<\/strong> will begin in October 2017 and go until September 2018.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>7. Golden Rule<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/g\/golden-rule.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">The Golden Rule<\/a> is a term in fiscal policy that basically means that over an economic cycle, the government should borrow to pay for investments that benefit future generations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>Considering the dismal state of the economy, the citizens are convinced that the government hasn\u2019t followed the <strong>Golden Rule<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>8. Half Year<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/h\/half-year-convention-for-depreciation.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">The half-year convention<\/a> is an assumption that newly acquired assets are in use halfway through the year, regardless of the actual length of time the assets have been in use.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>We need to follow the <strong>half-year<\/strong> convention to calculate the company\u2019s annual taxes.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>9. Income Tax<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/i\/incometax.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Income tax<\/a> is the tax levied by the government on the total income generated by individuals and companies.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>The loopholes in the taxation system helped the wealthy oil company owner escape millions of dollars in <strong>income tax<\/strong>, without technically violating the law.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>10. Joint Account<\/h3>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/investinganswers.com\/dictionary\/j\/joint-account\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">joint account<\/a> is a bank account registered under the names of two or more individuals. All members can deposit and withdraw money from it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>Tired of sharing <strong>joint accounts<\/strong> with her ex-husband, Nina opened a new bank account just for herself long before the divorce was finalized.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>11. Keynesian Economics<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imf.org\/external\/pubs\/ft\/fandd\/2014\/09\/basics.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Keynesian economics<\/a> refers to the various theories formulated by the British economist John Maynard Keynes during the Great Depression, which he published in his 1936 book <a href=\"https:\/\/smile.amazon.com\/General-Theory-Employment-Interest-Money\/dp\/198781780X?tag=fluentu-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">&#8220;The General Theory of Employment, Interest, and Money.&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>While studying the history of how economics developed as a discipline, make sure you learn about<strong>\u00a0Keynesian Economics<\/strong> as well.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>12. Liquid Asset<\/h3>\n<p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/l\/liquidasset.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">liquid asset<\/a> is cash or any asset that can be quickly converted to cash without loss in value.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>He insisted that I need to have enough <strong>liquid assets<\/strong> to qualify for a home loan.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>13. Macroeconomics and Microeconomics<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/ask\/answers\/012615\/how-do-i-differentiate-between-micro-and-macro-economics.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Macroeconomics<\/a> refers to the study of whole (aggregate) economies or economic systems, while microeconomics refers to the study of individual units, like a person or a company.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>If you want to analyze general trends in an economy, study <strong>macroeconomics<\/strong>. But if you\u2019re looking to run a successful business, <strong>microeconomics<\/strong> is the key.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>14. Net Asset Value\u00a0(NAV)<\/h3>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/investinganswers.com\/dictionary\/n\/net-asset-value\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">net asset value<\/a> is the value of an entity\u2019s assets, minus the value of its liabilities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>A mutual fund&#8217;s <strong>net asset value<\/strong> will tell you if your investment is worth it.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>15. Oligopoly<\/h3>\n<p>An <a href=\"https:\/\/investinganswers.com\/dictionary\/o\/oligopoly\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">oligopoly<\/a> is a name for a market that is dominated by a few sellers and therefore has less competition.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>If you want to make it big in an <strong>oligopoly<\/strong>, keep an eye out for rival markets and be strategic about your financial decisions.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>16. Pay As You Earn\u00a0(PAYE)<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/p\/pay-as-you-earn.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">PAYE<\/a> is a tax payment method where your taxes are deducted from your salary itself, before you receive your salary.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>I thought the <strong>PAYE<\/strong> system would cut down on my earnings, but it has actually made my life easier.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>17. Quota<\/h3>\n<p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/q\/quota.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">quota<\/a> is a share or a set number of things or people. In economics, quotas are usually limitations on imports or exports.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>The new reform in the import <strong>quota<\/strong> is a great help for domestic suppliers.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>18. Real Interest Rate<\/h3>\n<p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/r\/realinterestrate.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">real interest rate<\/a> is the current rate of interest offered by a bank, minus the rate of inflation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>The bank&#8217;s new interest rate is 5.5% but with the rate of inflation currently at 2%, the <strong>real interest rate<\/strong> is only 3.5%.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>19. Shareholder<\/h3>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/s\/shareholder.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">shareholder<\/a> is any person or company that owns shares of stock in a corporation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>James recently became a <strong>shareholder<\/strong> in a major corporation.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>20. Tax Haven<\/h3>\n<p>Simply speaking, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/t\/taxhaven.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">tax haven<\/a> is an area where taxes are imposed at a low rate (or not at all).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>Jimmy wanted to know more about offshore accounts so I told him to research\u00a0<strong>tax havens<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>21. Unit Trust<\/h3>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/u\/unittrust.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">unit trust<\/a> is an organization that pools money from small investors and invests it in shares and stocks under a trust deed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>If you\u2019re a first-time investor, consider partnering with a <strong>unit trust<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>22. Value-added Tax (VAT)<\/h3>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/v\/valueaddedtax.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">value-added tax<\/a> is a consumption tax on goods and services.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>Before going to a fancy restaurant, check their <strong>VAT<\/strong> rates unless you want to be surprised by the bill.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>23. White Knight<\/h3>\n<p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/w\/whiteknight.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">white knight<\/a> is a person or company that &#8220;saves&#8221; a corporation from being taken over by a hostile company.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>Patrick Soon-Shiong is considered a <strong>white knight<\/strong> for investing in Tribune Publishing, which would have otherwise been taken over by Gannett Co.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>24. X-Efficiency<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.investinganswers.com\/financial-dictionary\/economics\/x-efficiency-6393\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">X-efficiency<\/a> refers to the production of something at the minimum possible cost. It&#8217;s the degree of efficiency maintained by corporations when there&#8217;s a lack of competitive pressure.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>John&#8217;s company, being a small one, is unable to compete with the major firms. The workers know this, which is why they don&#8217;t work as hard\u2014no wonder their <strong>x-efficiency<\/strong> fails.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>25. Yield<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/investinganswers.com\/dictionary\/y\/yield\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Yield<\/a> refers to the yearly income earned from an investment. It&#8217;s often expressed as a percentage.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>What&#8217;s the minimum <strong>yield<\/strong> you expect from this investment?<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>26.
