After you&#8217;ve exchanged names and greeted each other, you may go on to make some &#8220;small talk.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/english\/blog\/english-small-talk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Small talk<\/a> is common in many English-speaking countries, especially in the U.S., Canada and England. It&#8217;s considered polite to add small talk to the beginning of the conversation before talking about its main subject, whether it&#8217;s personal or professional.<\/p>\n<p>The most <em>widespread<\/em> (common) question is <strong>&#8220;How are you?&#8221;<\/strong>\u00a0In fact, it&#8217;s so common that it becomes automatic for people to say, even when they hardly know the person!<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;How are you&#8221; is often even considered part of the greeting (i.e. &#8220;Hi, how are you?&#8221;).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There are several ways to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/english\/how-are-you-esl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ask someone how they&#8217;re doing<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>How are you? \/ How are you doing?<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n(Neutral.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong>How&#8217;s it going?<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\n(More informal.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong>How are things?<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\n(Informal.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong>What&#8217;s up?<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\n(Very informal.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>An interesting thing about asking these questions is that an answer isn&#8217;t really required. Unless you&#8217;re very close friends with someone, they&#8217;re not expecting you to give them an honest answer about your day\u2014as this funny video shows:<\/p>\n<p><lite-youtube videoid=\"5pw9ZN8SOes\"><\/lite-youtube><\/p>\n<p>Instead, a simple answer and a &#8220;how are you&#8221; in return is enough for a typical conversation in English:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong>I&#8217;m well. And yourself?<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Note that you might often hear people say &#8220;I&#8217;m good&#8221; when they mean that they&#8217;re well and doing well.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m good&#8221; is grammatically incorrect in this context, but it&#8217;s very common in spoken English, just like a few other mistakes English speakers make, so be careful!<\/p>\n<p>Small talk can also be the primary goal of a conversation, especially when you&#8217;re talking to people you don&#8217;t know and are unlikely to meet again.<\/p>\n<p>There are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themuse.com\/advice\/your-foolproof-formula-for-making-small-talk-that-doesnt-involve-awkward-silences\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">many ways to use small talk successfully<\/a>, even when you&#8217;re still getting comfortable with English conversation for beginners. Use them smartly!<\/p>\n<h2>Asking and Answering Questions<\/h2>\n<p><lite-youtube videoid=\"O7NSW-hYr_4\"><\/lite-youtube><\/p>\n<p>A conversation is an exchange of ideas, questions and thoughts, so the best way to keep a conversation going is by asking questions!<\/p>\n<p>There are two types of questions you may ask: <strong>closed-ended<\/strong> and <strong>open-ended<\/strong> questions. Closed-ended questions are also called &#8220;yes\/no&#8221; questions, because their goal is to confirm or deny certain information. For example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong>Are you having a good day?<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong>Did you just get to the office?<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong>Have you seen my email?<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Compare the examples above to the open-ended questions below. This will help you construct your answer using proper grammar.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t worry about using difficult words\u2014it&#8217;s fine to keep things simple! And if you don&#8217;t understand a certain question or word, don&#8217;t be afraid to ask.<\/p>\n<p>As a beginner English learner, you may have trouble understanding everything being said in English. That&#8217;s okay. Maybe they have an unfamiliar accent. Maybe you didn&#8217;t hear the last thing they said. Or maybe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/english\/play\/226\/how-to-ask-someone-to-repeat-something\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-schema-attribute=\"\">they have a pen in their mouth and you can&#8217;t understand what they&#8217;re saying<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s perfectly normal to ask for clarification or to repeat something. Just remember to be polite!<\/p>\n<p>If you don&#8217;t understand something, for example, a word or even some idea relating to your conversation, you could say:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong>I&#8217;m sorry, I don&#8217;t understand. Could you please repeat that?<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong>I&#8217;m sorry, I don&#8217;t understand. Could you please explain that?<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>or even&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Care to elaborate?<\/em><br \/>\n<\/strong>(This very informal question is the short version of &#8220;Do you care to elaborate on this?&#8221;)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you simply didn&#8217;t hear something, just say it like this:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong>I&#8217;m sorry, I didn&#8217;t hear that. Could you please repeat?<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong>I&#8217;m sorry, I didn&#8217;t catch that. Could you please repeat?<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>or even&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong>Could you say that again, please?<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Come again?<br \/>\n<\/em><\/strong>(This is very informal, and it can sound rude to some people.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Don&#8217;t be shy to ask for help. In this podcast, you can learn a lot of facts about topics like speed reading, uranium, taxes, circuses, the Titanic and many, many more.<\/p>\n<p>A couple of awesome podcasts for English learners specifically are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/episodes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">All Ears English<\/a>, which covers IELTS and business topics as well, and <a href=\"https:\/\/reallifeglobal.com\/real-life-english-esl-podcasts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Real Life English<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3>5. Subscribe to YouTube channels<\/h3>\n<p>There are plenty of YouTube channels that focus on conversational English, and many of them release new content regularly.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCV1h_cBE0Drdx19qkTM0WNw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Daily English Conversation<\/a> is a channel that, as you guessed it, focuses entirely on\u00a0<strong>everyday dialogues<\/strong>. It\u2019s perfect for sharpening your listening skills, improving your pronunciation and learning important words, and the content is suitable for learners across all skill levels.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>My tip would be to\u00a0<strong>go through their playlists<\/strong>. There\u2019s one called\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/playlist?list=PLTyvAtj9OYb1vr-gESA7YyCQ2BjQ9twqP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201cSpoken English Conversation with Subtitles\u201d<\/a>\u00a0that\u2019s particularly useful and will give you a crash course on communicative English<\/p>\n<p>A standalone video that I&#8217;d recommend would be\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=OHK-xsvW0TQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201cEveryday English Conversations\u201d<\/a> from Boston English Centre. It&#8217;s just one and a half hours long and will give you <strong>an overview of how English conversations generally sound<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><lite-youtube videoid=\"OHK-xsvW0TQ\"><\/lite-youtube><\/p>\n<p>Similarly, the video\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=kxb8EpyhKro\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201c50 Daily English Conversations\u201d<\/a>\u00a0by Eko Languages is a little over an hour long and covers around\u00a0<strong>50 different scenarios<\/strong>\u00a0you might normally encounter, such as being late to work or describing an office room.<\/p>\n<p><lite-youtube videoid=\"kxb8EpyhKro\"><\/lite-youtube><\/p>\n<h3>6. Use conversation apps<\/h3>\n<p>There are mobile apps that specialize in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/english\/english-speaking-app\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">teaching English conversation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Some conversation apps teach you <strong>word pronunciation and sentence intonation,<\/strong> others give you <strong>vocabulary and examples of conversations,<\/strong> and there are others that even have <strong>speech recognition<\/strong> and allow you to record your own voice.<\/p>\n<p>Two fantastic apps I really recommend are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.speakingpal.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-schema-attribute=\"\">SpeakingPal<\/a> (which is a perfect option for beginners) and <a href=\"https:\/\/elsaspeak.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-schema-attribute=\"\">ELSA<\/a> (which is a great option if you want to improve your American pronunciation). To hone your listening skills, you can practice with <a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.atentertainment.learningenglishbyparagraph&amp;hl=en_US\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">English Conversation<\/a>, which has over 500 dialogues that covers common topics.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3>7. Try tongue twisters<\/h3>\n<p>This tip can sound crazy, but it really works.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/english\/tongue-twisters-in-english\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-schema-attribute=\"\">Tongue twisters<\/a> normally focus on one or two specific English sounds. These sounds can be difficult sometimes, but what makes tongue twisters<em> challenging<\/em>\u00a0(difficult) is having those<strong> sounds repeat many times and very close to each other.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you practice with tongue twisters, <strong>your pronunciation will improve,<\/strong> and when you have to pronounce a difficult word or talk faster during a conversation, you won&#8217;t have any problem.<\/p>\n<h3>8. Read out loud<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/site\/\/4\/english-conversation-2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-36647\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/site\/\/4\/english-conversation-2.jpg\" alt=\"english conversation\" width=\"500\" height=\"386\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Reading out loud is an excellent exercise that&#8217;ll help you<strong> improve your pronunciation, accent and intonation. <\/strong>When you read out loud, you&#8217;re going from a passive to an active activity.<\/p>\n<p>This means you&#8217;ll be more focused while doing the activity, which will help you remember more words and grammar patterns you can later use in conversation.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, when you read out loud, you try to sound more like a native, so if you don&#8217;t know how to pronounce a word, you&#8217;ll probably look for its pronunciation online. The result is <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/english\/how-to-improve-english-pronunciation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-schema-attribute=\"\">an improvement in your pronunciation<\/a> and speaking skills.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>9. Find a language partner or a speaking tutor<\/h3>\n<p>Another way to get some English conversation practice is to find a language partner or a speaking tutor. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/find-a-language-exchange-partner\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-schema-attribute=\"\">Language exchange partners<\/a> are normally free because <strong>you&#8217;re teaching them your language and they&#8217;re teaching you theirs in return.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are many websites where you can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.meetup.com\/find\/events\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-schema-attribute=\"\">find a language exchange partner living in your area<\/a>, <em>although<\/em>\u00a0(but, however) having a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/best-language-exchange-apps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-schema-attribute=\"\"><strong>language exchange online<\/strong><\/a> is getting more and more popular.<\/p>\n<p>Another option is to find a tutor who specializes in English conversation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/english\/english-tutor-online\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-schema-attribute=\"\">Language tutors<\/a> and teachers cost money, but their knowledge of the language and their teaching skills will normally allow you to get <strong>better and faster results than with a language exchange partner.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you want to find a good English tutor, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.verbling.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-schema-attribute=\"\">check out Verbling<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>10. Take an online speaking course<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/site\/\/4\/english-conversation-3.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-36648\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/site\/\/4\/english-conversation-3.jpg\" alt=\"english conversation\" width=\"500\" height=\"322\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>My last tip for you is to take a conversation class or course.<\/p>\n<p>This type, of course, is specifically designed to <strong>make you speak and lose the fear of making mistakes.<\/strong> You&#8217;ll be surrounded by other classmates with a level of English similar to yours, so <strong>you&#8217;ll feel more comfortable talking<\/strong> around them.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/english\/english-speaking-online\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-schema-attribute=\"\">Online speaking and conversation courses<\/a> are a perfect alternative to in-class speaking courses. Many of them (especially if they&#8217;re MOOCs) are completely free, so there&#8217;s no valid excuse not to start improving your conversation skills today.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re looking for high-quality courses to start with, my recommendations are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"title page-title\"><strong><span class=\"field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.coursera.org\/learn\/speak-english-professionally?irclickid=T5NUTbRmfxyNURKRysW1EQKFUkF0bu2yB0%3A7UA0&amp;irgwc=1&amp;utm_medium=partners&amp;utm_source=impact&amp;utm_campaign=315774&amp;utm_content=b2c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-schema-attribute=\"\">Speak English Professionally: In Person, Online &amp; On the Phone<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden\">This is a MOOC offered by the Georgia Institute of Technology. You\u2019ll learn what to say to someone when you meet them and pick up some techniques for speaking confidently.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Having a conversation in English doesn&#8217;t have to be complicated. You may feel a little awkward and shy about your English speaking at first, but it&#8217;s okay.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re scared of making a mistake, it&#8217;s understandable. But mistakes are going to happen when you get started with spoken English\u2014it&#8217;s absolutely normal.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/english\/common-mistakes-in-english\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Making mistakes<\/a> is a big part of learning English conversation for beginners.
