Your\u00a0<em>motivation<\/em> (the reason you want to study English),\u00a0<em>goals<\/em> (what you want to achieve or accomplish by studying English) and\u00a0<em>resources<\/em> (something you can use to benefit you) will help you figure out what and how to study.<\/p>\n<h3>Know Your Motivation<\/h3>\n<p>Are you learning for travel? For <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/business-english\/how-to-speak-business-english\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">work<\/a>? For family or personal reasons?<\/p>\n<h3>Set Your Goals<\/h3>\n<p>Make your goals as <em>specific<\/em> (full of detail) as you can.<\/p>\n<p>Your goals will depend on a few factors:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 12px\"><strong>What<\/strong> you want to learn<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 12px\"><strong>How much time<\/strong> you have to study<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 12px\"><strong>When<\/strong> you want to meet your goal<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 12px\"><strong>How you can test<\/strong> what you have learned<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Let us say you are traveling\u00a0<em>overseas<\/em> (to a different country) to the United States in six months. You are going to visit your <em>relatives<\/em> (family members), who are planning a party in your honor. At the party, you will meet American friends and\u00a0<em>acquaintances <\/em>(people you know who are not your friends or family).<\/p>\n<p>You decide that you want to learn conversational English. You want to speak easily with everyone you meet at the party.<\/p>\n<p>So, you know your\u00a0<em>time frame<\/em> (amount of time) and what you want to learn. Our channel, for example, offers language lessons based on popular movies, music and shows, such as &#8220;Friends&#8221;:<\/p>\n<p><lite-youtube videoid=\"vvdYNV0IaRQ\"><\/lite-youtube><\/p>\n<h3>Imitate<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/site\/\/4\/english-for-beginners-4.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-31837\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/site\/\/4\/english-for-beginners-4.jpg\" alt=\"english for beginners\" width=\"500\" height=\"336\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Aside from listening to English-language music and shows, you can also try to\u00a0<em>imitate<\/em> (copy or do something like) what you hear.<\/p>\n<p>Listen to the words and how they are pronounced by native speakers. If you really want to sound more like someone from a certain country, try to get most of your English-language audio and video from that country.<\/p>\n<h3>Swap Out Words<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/site\/\/4\/english-for-beginners-5.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-31838\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/site\/\/4\/english-for-beginners-5.jpg\" alt=\"english for beginners\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Learn practical phrases and words that go with them. Practice\u00a0<em>swapping out<\/em> (changing) words in set phrases.<\/p>\n<p>For example, when you learn to say, \u201cGood morning,\u201d you can try other greetings, like \u201cGood afternoon,\u201d \u201cGood evening,\u201d \u201cGood night\u201d or \u201cGood day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a dialogue about going to a restaurant, you might hear \u201cMay I have a glass of water?\u201d Try to swap in other drinks. For example, try \u201cMay I have a glass of wine?\u201d or \u201cMay I have a glass of tea?\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Learn Patterns<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/site\/\/4\/english-for-beginners-6.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-31839\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/site\/\/4\/english-for-beginners-6.jpg\" alt=\"english for beginners\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It is easier to remember\u00a0<em>patterns<\/em> (things that repeat) than complicated rules.<\/p>\n<p>For example, you might see patterns like this for most English verbs:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">I\/you\/we\/they see\u2014<strong>but<\/strong> he\/she\/it see<strong><u>s<\/u><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">I\/you\/we\/they walk\u2014<strong>but<\/strong> he\/she\/it walk<strong><u>s<\/u><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">I\/you\/we\/they make\u2014<strong>but<\/strong> he\/she\/it make<strong><u>s<\/u><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>For the simple <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/english\/english-present-tense\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">present tense<\/a> of most English verbs, the pattern is that you add an <strong>-s<\/strong> for the third-person singular (<strong>he\/she\/it<\/strong>). The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/english\/english-verb-conjugation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">conjugations<\/a> for <strong>I\/you\/we\/they<\/strong> are\u00a0<em>identical to<\/em> (the same as) each other.<\/p>\n<p>So, instead of memorizing seven different conjugations for seven different persons, you only have to remember <strong>two<\/strong> conjugations.<\/p>\n<h3>Start Reading Shorter Texts<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/site\/\/4\/english-for-beginners-7.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-31840\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/site\/\/4\/english-for-beginners-7.jpg\" alt=\"english for beginners\" width=\"500\" height=\"334\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Start reading in English with something simple, like comics or children\u2019s books. When you are learning English as a beginner, long news articles or 300-page novels will be too hard to understand. You might get frustrated and want to give up.<\/p>\n<p>But when you start small, you will understand better and gain confidence\u2014and want to learn more.<\/p>\n<p>Take your time studying each text\u00a0<em>thoroughly<\/em> (completely). As more words become <em>familiar<\/em> (known to you), you can read <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/english\/learn-advanced-english\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">longer and more difficult texts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Speak Often<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/site\/\/4\/english-for-beginners-8.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-31841\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/site\/\/4\/english-for-beginners-8.jpg\" alt=\"english for beginners\" width=\"500\" height=\"334\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Speak with native English speakers as often as you can. Look at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/english\/best-websites-to-learn-english\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">English-language websites<\/a>. Join a group that uses English on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/english\/learn-english-by-chatting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social media<\/a>. Go to a restaurant where English is spoken and order your food in English.<\/p>\n<p>Keep a daily journal in English. Use your mobile phone to record yourself talking about your day in English. Practice<em>\u00a0consistently<\/em> (doing something the same way over and over) and in different ways.<\/p>\n<h2>What is the English Beginner Level?<\/h2>\n<p>To make language learning more systematic, the Council of Europe created the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coe.int\/en\/web\/common-european-framework-reference-languages\/level-descriptions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Common European Framework of Reference for Languages<\/a> or CEFR. This\u00a0<em>framework<\/em> (supporting structure) is a useful way to know your language level as an English speaker.<\/p>\n<p>There are a total of six CEFR levels. These match three kinds of learners:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Basic User<\/strong>: Levels A1 and A2<\/li>\n<li><strong>Independent User<\/strong>: Levels B1 and B2<\/li>\n<li><strong>Proficient User<\/strong>: Levels C1 and C2<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you are learning English as a beginner, you will focus on CEFR levels A1 and A2.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-70198\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/site\/\/4\/CEFR-Beginner.jpg\" alt=\"CEFR-Beginner\" width=\"800\" height=\"1167\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>CEFR Level: A1<\/h3>\n<p>Once you have studied English for a few weeks or months, you should be able to do these things that are considered A1 level according to the CEFR.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 12px\"><strong>Use simple greetings and introductions: <\/strong>You can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/english\/english-greetings-expressions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">say hello and introduce yourself to others<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 12px\"><strong>Talk about basic personal information: <\/strong>You can talk about yourself a little bit. You can describe your height, eye color, the length of your hair and other basics. You can also describe other people in general terms.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 12px\"><strong>Explain family information: <\/strong>You can talk about your family. You can describe your parents, discuss how many brothers or sisters you have and say if they are younger or older than you. You can say whether you are married or not and talk about how many children you have, and how old they are.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 12px\"><strong>Express survival or travel needs: <\/strong>At a restaurant or market, you can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/english\/how-to-order-food-in-english\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">order meals<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/english\/talking-about-food-in-english\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">buy food<\/a>. You can get a room in a hotel. You can also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/english\/english-travel-phrases\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">buy a plane or train ticket<\/a>, or take a bus wherever you want to go. At the A1 level, you know enough English to make sure you have food,\u00a0<em>shelter<\/em> (place to live) and\u00a0<em>transportation<\/em> (what you use to travel or get around a place).<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 12px\"><strong>Hold very basic conversations: <\/strong>As long as people speak English slowly, you can have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/english\/english-conversation-for-beginners\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">simple conversations about basic topics<\/a>. You feel confident <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/english\/talk-about-weather-in-english\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">talking about the weather<\/a>. You can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/english\/daily-routine-vocabulary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">make comments about the world around you<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>CEFR Level A2<\/h3>\n<p>When you get to the A2 level of the CEFR, you are no longer a complete beginner at English.<\/p>\n<p>You can now understand and use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/english\/difficult-hard-english-words\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">harder words in English<\/a>. You can talk about a wider range of topics and do the following.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 12px\"><strong>Use simple idiomatic expressions: <\/strong>At the A2 level, you&#8217;re starting to use simple English sayings and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/english\/idioms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">idioms<\/a>. For example, you know it is time to study when someone tells you to <em>hit the books.<\/em> You ask others to\u00a0<em>pitch in<\/em> when you need their time or ideas. You understand that <em>a far cry<\/em> means that one thing is really different from something else.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 12px\"><strong>Talk about routine tasks: <\/strong>Using simple words, you can talk about things you do often\u2014like what you do at work or hobbies you enjoy in your\u00a0<em>spare<\/em> (free) time.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 12px\"><strong>Tell others about personal history: <\/strong>You can tell people where you come from and where you have lived. You can describe your education and work history. You can also talk about your family in more detail than what I have mentioned earlier.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 12px\"><strong>Talk about the past, present and future: <\/strong>You know <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/english\/learn-english-grammar-tenses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">basic English verb tenses<\/a>. You use verbs correctly when you speak about what happened last year, last week or yesterday. You can talk clearly about what is happening right now and what will happen tomorrow or next month.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 12px\"><strong>Use proper prepositions: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/educator-english\/english-prepositions-exercises\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Prepositions<\/a> can be <em>tricky<\/em> (hard or difficult) for beginning English learners\u2014but at the A2 level, you have a better understanding. You know how to use the proper prepositions when you talk. You know that you are responsible <em>for<\/em> yourself, that you put your coffee\u00a0<em>on<\/em> the table and that you start work\u00a0<em>at<\/em> nine o\u2019clock\u00a0<em>in<\/em> the morning.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 12px\"><strong>Read and write simple sentences<\/strong><strong>: <\/strong>At the A2 level, you can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/english\/easy-simple-english-books-read-beginners\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">read easy texts<\/a>. You can understand short sentences in a simple story, such as a fairy tale or a children\u2019s book. You can also write <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/english\/easy-english-sentences\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">basic sentences<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/english\/how-to-improve-english-spelling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spell English words correctly<\/a> and use the right verb tenses and prepositions. Your meaning in written English is clear.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Moving Up to Independent<\/h3>\n<p>Now you know all about English for beginners. How can you tell when you have reached the independent (B1\/B2) level?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 12px\"><strong>Understand more complex idiomatic expressions: <\/strong>You know that\u00a0<em>break a leg<\/em> means \u201cgood luck\u201d and\u00a0<em>hit the hay<\/em> means \u201cgo to sleep.\u201d Now, you are learning that\u00a0<em>we\u2019ll cross that bridge when we come to it<\/em> means that \u201cwe\u2019ll deal with that problem later.\u201d You understand that\u00a0<em>the best thing since sliced bread<\/em> means &#8220;something really good&#8221; and that <em>on Cloud Nine<\/em> means &#8220;very happy&#8221; (among other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/english\/english-idioms-7\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">idiomatic expressions<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 12px\"><strong>Express opinions clearly: <\/strong>When someone asks what you think, you are able to tell them clearly. You can explain why you feel or believe the way you do. You can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/english\/agreeing-and-disagreeing-in-english\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">express your opinions<\/a> in detail.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 12px\"><strong>Explain the reasoning behind basic decisions: <\/strong>If an English speaker asks you why you decided to do something, you can easily explain your reasoning.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 12px\"><strong>Understand basic texts fully: <\/strong>You can read simple articles or stories and understand them well. You can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/english\/how-to-improve-english-reading\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">correctly answer questions about what you have read<\/a>.
