In English, one type of question is the “Wh question.” These\u00a0questions begin with who, what, where, when, why<\/strong>, which or whose<\/strong>. How<\/strong>\u00a0is often included in this list as well, even though it doesn’t begin with “wh.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

Overview of Wh Questions in English\u00a0<\/h2>\n

Wh questions are called “open questions” because there are many possible answers<\/strong> (as opposed to just “yes” or “no”).<\/p>\n

For example, your answer to the question “Where are you from?” may be different from your friend\u2019s answer to this question. You<\/strong> can’t say “yes” or “no”<\/strong> because the answer must be a place, like \u201cChina\u201d or “Mexico City.”<\/p>\n

What…?<\/h2>\n

“What” is a very common question word. Use “what” to ask about a thing or idea<\/strong>. Usually, the answer to a “what” question is a noun<\/a> (a person, place, thing or idea).<\/p>\n

We use “when” to ask about a time or date<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

“Whom<\/strong>” is another question word like “who.” However, “whom” is not very common. Technically, “whom” asks about the direct object<\/a> of the sentence. For example:<\/p>\n

A: To whom <\/strong>should we send the letter?
\nB: We should send it to my mom<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In English, saying “whom” is formal. You can just use “who” in your conversations.<\/p>\n

To find out who owns something<\/strong>, start the question with “whose.”<\/p>\n

“How” doesn’t start with “Wh,” but it works the same as the Wh question words. We use “how” to ask about the way something happened or the way to do something<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

To ask for specific information, you can add an adjective or adverb after the word “how.”<\/p>\n

How old is your son?<\/p>\n

“How come<\/strong>” is an informal way to ask “why.”<\/p>\n

How to Form Wh Questions in English<\/h2>\n

Here’s how to form a Wh question in English:<\/p>\n

1. Start with the Wh- question word:<\/strong> Choose the appropriate question word (who, what, where, etc.) based on the information you want to ask about.<\/p>\n

2. Follow with the auxiliary verb or modal verb (if needed):<\/strong> Depending on the tense and verb structure, you might need to include an auxiliary verb (do, be<\/a> or have<\/a>) or a modal verb<\/a> (e.g., can, could, will, would, should, etc.).\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

3. Add the subject (if needed):<\/strong> Include the subject of the sentence (the person or thing that does the action of the verb), if it’s not represented by the question word.<\/p>\n

4. Finish with the main verb (if needed):<\/strong> Include the main verb of the question (the action word) when needed. It can be in its base form (ex: “eat”) or conjugated depending on the tense and structure (ex: “eating”).<\/p>\n

5. Add any other necessary elements (if needed): <\/strong>If the question is more complex, you might need to add extra information (objects, adverbs, adjectives, etc.).<\/p>\n

This question uses the auxiliary verb “to be,”<\/strong> conjugated<\/a> as “are.” “Are” is also the main verb of the question. “You” is the subject and “upset” is an adjective<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

What<\/strong> are you reading?<\/p>\n

This question also uses “are” as the auxiliary verb. “You” is the subject and “reading” is the main verb, conjugated in the present continuous tense<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Where<\/strong> did they go on vacation?<\/p>\n

This question uses “to do” as the auxiliary verb<\/strong>, conjugated as “did” because it’s asking about the past tense<\/a>. “They” is the subject and “go” is the main verb.\u00a0<\/p>\n

When<\/strong> will the concert start?<\/p>\n

This question asks about the future tense, so it uses the modal verb \u201cwill.\u201d<\/strong> Next, we add the subject (\u201cthe concert\u201d) and then the main verb (\u201cstart\u201d).\u00a0<\/p>\n

Who<\/strong> ate the cake?<\/p>\n

In this question, \u201cwho\u201d represents the subject<\/strong> of the question. That means we don\u2019t need to use an auxiliary or modal verb or add the subject. We just put our main verb in the past tense (\u201cate\u201d) and then add the object (\u201cthe cake\u201d).<\/p>\n
