You use it for people in a higher position than you (like your teacher or boss) or complete strangers\u2014as well as academic or business writing, interviews and presentations.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Informal English<\/strong>\u00a0is used in everyday conversations and written communication in places like social media. You use it with family members, friends and <em>peers<\/em> (people who are your social equals) in casual settings.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This video lesson from our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@FluentUEnglish\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">YouTube channel<\/a> covers some formal English phrases you can use and their informal counterparts:<\/p>\n<p><lite-youtube videoid=\"dR9gNdiv-30\"><\/lite-youtube><\/p>\n<p>As you can see from the video, formal English uses correct grammar and vocabulary appropriate for the context.\u00a0Meanwhile, informal English uses <strong>contractions, colloquialisms, slang<\/strong> and the like. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In case you&#8217;re wondering what &#8220;contractions,&#8221; &#8220;colloquialisms&#8221; and &#8220;slang&#8221; are, you&#8217;re in luck: that&#8217;s what we&#8217;ll cover in the next sections.<\/p>\n<h2>Features of Formal and Informal English<\/h2>\n<h3>1. Contractions<\/h3>\n<p>Contractions are common in informal language. On the other hand, you&#8217;ll typically see passive voice in formal settings, particularly in official or academic writing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Here are examples of sentences using first-person pronouns, along with their more formal versions.
