They call this night <strong><em>Nochebuena\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>(literally &#8220;good night,&#8221; but meaning Christmas Eve). And of course, after Christmas celebrations wrap up, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/spanish\/happy-new-year-in-spanish\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the New Year<\/a> is right around the corner.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some common phrases you&#8217;ll hear around this time of the year. <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Note that all of these phrases are in the singular, informal <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">t\u00fa<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (you) form. To make them formal or plural, refer to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/spanish\/how-to-conjugate-spanish-verbs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">our guide on conjugating Spanish verbs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><em>\u00a1F<\/em><em>eliz Navidad!<\/em> (Merry Christmas!)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Of course,\u00a0<em>feliz<\/em> means &#8220;happy,&#8221; so the literal translation of\u00a0<em>Feliz Navidad\u00a0<\/em>is &#8220;Happy Christmas.&#8221;\u00a0<em>Navidad <\/em>comes from the Latin <em>nativus<\/em>, meaning &#8220;born&#8221;\u2014the same root word for the English word &#8220;nativity.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3><strong><em>\u00a1Felices Fiestas! <\/em>(Happy Holidays!)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>While you may know the Spanish word <em>fiesta<\/em> to mean &#8220;party,&#8221; <em>las fiestas\u00a0<\/em>can also refer to the holidays. This is a good way to greet someone in a more general way, referring to all of the festivities that are celebrated around this time of the year.<\/p>\n<h3><strong><em>\u00a1Feliz A\u00f1o Nuevo! <\/em>(<\/strong>Happy New Year!)<\/h3>\n<p>You can also just say <em>\u00a1F<\/em><em>eliz A\u00f1o!<\/em>, which literally means &#8220;Happy Year!&#8221; but is really just a shorter way of saying &#8220;Happy New Year!&#8221; in Spanish.<\/p>\n<h3><strong><em>Que tengas un pr\u00f3spero a\u00f1o. <\/em>(<\/strong>I hope you have a prosperous new year.)<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This is a good phrase to write in a Christmas card, message or email\u2014though be sure to change <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">tengas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">tengan <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">if you&#8217;re talking to more than one person. Even a \u20ac20 stake in the winning ticket can return thousands of euros\u2014just take a look at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-38407050\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this story from 2016<\/a>!<\/p>\n<h3><em>Nochebuena<\/em> (Christmas Eve)<\/h3>\n<p>As mentioned earlier, most Spanish-speaking regions <strong>hold Christmas celebrations on December 24<\/strong>, referred to as <em>Nochebuena<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Nochebuena<\/em> celebrations look different around the world\u2014and can even differ greatly among families in the same community\u2014but no matter where you are or who you&#8217;re with, <strong>the main part of the <em>Nochebuena<\/em> celebrations is food.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Families gather for feasts that last hours, eating meats, seafood, soups, tacos and desserts ranging from flan to the seasonal nougat <a href=\"https:\/\/theculturetrip.com\/europe\/spain\/articles\/a-brief-history-of-spanish-turron\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><em>turr\u00f3n<\/em><\/a>. Then at midnight, many attend <a href=\"https:\/\/ourspanishlife.com\/what-is-la-misa-del-gallo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>La Misa Del Gallo<\/em><\/a> (Mass of the Rooster) to kick off Christmas Day.<\/p>\n<h3><em>Nochevieja<\/em> (New Year&#8217;s Eve)<\/h3>\n<p>During the Christmas period, we also have <em>Nochevieja\u2014<\/em>meaning New Year&#8217;s Eve, though it literally translates to &#8220;old night!&#8221;\u00a0<em>Nochevieja <\/em>is <strong>celebrated in both Spain and Latin America<\/strong> with <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.spainintheusa.org\/5-spanish-new-years-eve-traditions-c00b1de01966\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a few unique traditions<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For example, some people intentionally <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/thesalt\/2012\/12\/26\/168092673\/green-grapes-and-red-underwear-a-spanish-new-years-eve\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wear red underwear<\/a> during the celebrations, as the color red, associated with passion, love and prosperity, is supposed to bring the wearer good luck.\u00a0Spain also has the tradition of eating twelve grapes at the stroke of midnight<em>\u2014<\/em>again, in an effort to bring twelve months of prosperity and good luck.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Other Spanish-speaking countries have their own traditions, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barcelo.com\/pinandtravel\/es\/tradiciones-de-fin-de-ano-nuevo-en-el-mundo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">water fights in Puerto Rico and burning huge dummies in Ecuador!<\/a><\/p>\n<h3><em>Los Reyes Magos<\/em> (The Three Wise Men)<\/h3>\n<p>Traditionally, <em>Pap\u00e1 Noel<\/em> (Santa Claus) is not the Christmas gift-bearing figure in Spanish-speaking countries: that task belongs to <a href=\"https:\/\/devourtours.com\/blog\/los-reyes-magos-the-spanish-christmas-tradition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>los Reyes Magos<\/em> (the Three Wise Men)<\/a>. <strong>They bring presents to Spanish children on January 6,<\/strong> at the end of the 12 Days of Christmas.<\/p>\n<p>Like with Santa in other parts of the world, children write letters to the Three Wise Men detailing the gifts they&#8217;d like. On the night of January 5, plates of food and sweets are left out for <em>los Reyes Magos<\/em> as thanks.
