Note:<\/strong> See how diecis\u00e9is<\/em>\u00a0(16) is made up of diez <\/em>(10) and seis<\/em> (6), which together make 16? This idea of combining numbers will be a common theme throughout this post.<\/p>\n

When they’re paired with masculine nouns, we also shorten numbers that end in uno<\/em> to \u00fan<\/em> <\/strong>(note the accent). So it’s veinti\u00fan espejos\u00a0<\/em>(21 mirrors) because espejos\u00a0<\/em>is masculine.<\/p>\n

Note: <\/strong>To make specific numbers past 30, you have to use y <\/em>(and) to connect the 10s with the 1s. For example:<\/p>\n

33 is treinta y<\/strong> tres<\/em><\/p>\n

65 is sesenta y<\/strong> cinco<\/em><\/p>\n

Note:<\/strong> C<\/em>ien\u00a0<\/em>is only used to say 100 even\u2014anything above that and we’ll use\u00a0ciento<\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

There’s also no y <\/em>used with these larger numbers because the y<\/em> is only used to separate the 10s from the 1s<\/strong> (42 =\u00a0cuarenta y dos<\/em>) but not the 100s from the 10s (142 =\u00a0ciento cuarenta y dos<\/em>).<\/p>\n

So, following this pattern, 104 is ciento cuatro.\u00a0<\/em>147 is ciento cuarenta y siete<\/em>\u00a0not\u00a0<\/strong>ciento y cuarenta y siete.<\/em><\/p>\n
