When you sit down to tackle a book that’s not written in your native language, you’re bound to hit a few roadblocks. So a\u00a0great way to ease into reading in Spanish is by\u00a0picking up a book that uses parallel text<\/a>\u2014a format in which Spanish is printed on one page and the English translation is written on the next page.<\/p>\n

This will allow you to get the reading practice you need in Spanish and quickly get answers when you can’t seem to figure out the corresponding word or phrase in English.\u00a0There are even tons of bilingual books in Spanish and English for free online, and here\u00a0are 15 books and resources to help you get started.<\/p>\n

Bilingual Short Story Collections<\/h2>\n

1. “Side-By-Side Bilingual Books”<\/a>\"Stories<\/a><\/h3>\n

“Side-By-Side Bilingual Books” is a series that teaches Spanish through short folk stories and legends\u2014the kind where wickedness doesn’t prevail and wisdom and courage win the day\u2014collected from various parts of the Spanish-speaking world and retold in student-friendly language.<\/p>\n

The various installments of the series will take you to Spain<\/a>, Mexico<\/a> and all over\u00a0Latin America<\/a>\u00a0to experience the history and culture of these locations.<\/p>\n

The stories presented here are quick reads. Each one is just a few pages long and can easily be completed in one sitting.<\/p>\n

This, combined with the prefaces giving the historical context of each tale, makes the series a good choice for early-career readers, those with an interest in history and those looking to add a little parallel text to their study routines without committing to a longer book or story.<\/p>\n

Since language learners are the target audience, the language is relatively simple in nature, but you’ll still get a drop or two of rarer words like candelero <\/em>(candlestick) and\u00a0rescate\u00a0<\/em>(ransom) to add to your vocabulary<\/a>.<\/p>\n

You can also find a detailed glossary in the back, which is helpful for looking up the meaning of a word rather than relying on how it’s translated in context.<\/p>\n

2. “Dover Dual Language”<\/a>\"Great<\/a><\/h3>\n

If you want to sink your teeth into some more advanced material and learn more about the foundations of Spanish-language literature, you should check out the “Dover Dual Language” publications.<\/p>\n

This series includes parallel texts in a variety of languages, and their Spanish offerings include many of the greats from Cervantes to Borges.<\/p>\n

They also include detailed prefaces that explain a bit about the authors and the context of various works.<\/p>\n

Sure, reading foreign-language works in their original language is great to get the author’s original intentions and such.<\/p>\n

However, a faithful translation can also do a great job capturing those intentions\u2014perhaps even better if your proficiency is below the native level. Reading the two together lets you approach the text using both strategies.<\/p>\n

If you’re looking for something a little simpler, not to worry\u2014Dover also offers beginner-level books with simple stories and adaptations to help you get your foot in the door. And the more you practice, the sooner you’ll be ready for the good stuff.<\/p>\n

3. “Spanish-American Short Stories: A Dual-Language Book”<\/a>\"Spanish-American<\/a><\/h3>\n

Needless to say, if you’re looking for something of literary merit to practice your Spanish with but don’t yet have a particular area of interest, you’re going to have to whittle your options down.<\/p>\n

To do that, you might choose to focus on a specific genre or literary movement.<\/p>\n

“Spanish-American Short Stories,” one of the books in the Dover series, provides a good overview of some of the fascinating short Spanish works that have come out of the Americas.<\/p>\n

The anthology features 17 stories from different countries spanning more than 50 years. You can check out the short bios on each author to have some direction before starting your literary excursion.<\/p>\n

The book opens with the editor praising the “gratifying international recognition” of Spanish-American authors, and this collection makes it clear why that recognition is due.<\/p>\n

Whether it’s the otherworldly society of gnomes and fairies in “El rub\u00ed” <\/em>(“The Ruby”) or the cruel, dark coal mine in “La compuerta n\u00famero 12” <\/em>(“Ventilation Door Number 12”), you’re bound to find something that piques your interest.<\/p>\n

4. “Learn Spanish: Parallel Text”<\/a>\"Learn<\/a><\/h3>\n

This grow-with-me series could work either in a classroom setting or for individual use.<\/p>\n

The books use a numbering system to help you pick material suited to your reading level and the stories are written with language learners in mind.<\/p>\n

The stories are a little longer than those in “Side-By-Side” but can still be tackled in one sitting.<\/p>\n

Pick up the first book in the series and you’ll be met with some fairly simple narratives involving characters’ excursions in Spain (be prepared for a little vosotros<\/a>, <\/em>by the way), going to the\u00a0tomatinas<\/em><\/a>\u00a0festival\u00a0and so forth. As you move along, the language gets more complex and more idiomatic<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Some of the stories will include words in bold and phrases like\u00a0vete t\u00fa a saber d\u00f3nde <\/em>(who knows where) and\u00a0todo el mundo\u00a0<\/em>(everyone) with their English equivalents in bold as well for easy learning.<\/p>\n

And for those of you who like to listen while you learn<\/a>, the books come with audio accompaniments to help you follow along with the text.<\/p>\n

Bilingual Full-length Books<\/h2>\n

5. “El ingenioso hidalgo don Quixote de la Mancha”<\/em><\/a> (“The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote de la Mancha”)\"El<\/a><\/h3>\n

You know his story. You’ve seen the John Lithgow movie. At the very least, you’ve heard the phrase “tilting at windmills.”<\/p>\n

And now, thanks to parallel text, you can have twice the fun while reading “Don Quixote de la Mancha.”<\/em><\/p>\n

This is another good example of a classic work that language learners will get a little more out of by reading it in two languages.<\/p>\n

Specifically in the case of the famous knight-errant, the book’s subtle brand of satirical humor can be a bit tough to pick up on when reading in your second language, and being able to take a peek at the English text definitely helps.<\/p>\n

The language is somewhat advanced and includes a touch of archaic Spanish, but it’s still accessible to anyone reading at least at an intermediate level.<\/p>\n

6. “El c\u00e1ntico de Navidad”<\/a><\/em> (“A Christmas Carol”)\"A<\/a><\/h3>\n

\u00a1Bah! Tonter\u00edas. <\/em>(Bah! Humbug.)<\/p>\n

Works originally written in English are also available in parallel text format.<\/p>\n

And while they don’t carry the cultural lessons of some of the works already mentioned, they’re just as helpful when it comes to language learning. They also offer the bonus of allowing you to learn through a story you may already know.<\/p>\n

Such is the case with “A Christmas Carol,” which has worked its way into the cultural consciousness through an abundance of specific lines and moments you’re probably familiar with.<\/p>\n

The translation referenced here is also a great example of being faithful without being overly literal, as Charles Dickens’ idiomatic style has to find its own poetry in Spanish\u2014nephew Fred’s “And I say, God bless it!” becomes “Por eso grito: \u00a1viva la Noche Buena!”<\/em> (“And so I cry: long live Christmas Eve!”)<\/p>\n

It’s a good way to learn Spanish, learn some interesting expressions and get into the Christmas spirit<\/a> while you study.<\/p>\n

7. “Macbeth”<\/a>\"Macbeth:<\/a><\/h3>\n

That there would be a need to make Shakespeare accessible to speakers of other languages isn’t surprising per se, but how does one go about translating a writer whose appeal is so closely wound up in language\u2014poetry, wordplay and so forth?<\/p>\n

The parallel text version of “Macbeth” referenced here offers another good look at literary translation from an English-speaking perspective.<\/p>\n

Rather than making the Spanish version fit Shakespeare’s rhyme structure, the translator gives similarly poetic language at its own pace with the English text handy to give you the feel of the original:<\/p>\n

“El mal es bien, y el bien es mal: cortemos los aires y la niebla.”\u00a0<\/em>(Fair is foul, and foul is fair: hover through the fog and filthy air.)<\/p>\n

You may learn as much about Shakespeare while you’re at it, but as language learning goes, it’s a good way to pick up words and learn what wordsmithing looks like in Spanish. Just don’t say the name in a theater<\/a> (in Spain or otherwise) and we’re good.<\/p>\n

Bilingual Online Resources<\/h2>\n

8. Bilinguis<\/a><\/h3>\n

If the idea of reading familiar titles appeals to you, you may want to do a little digging and find something that really sparks your interest\u2014whether it\u2019s a classic you\u2019ve already read or one you\u2019d like to try for the first time in Spanish.<\/p>\n

In addition to being a fun way to learn, it provides the kind of memorable context that can have a great impact on retention.<\/p>\n

Bilinguis.com is a good place to start. The site offers translations of public-domain works for the purposes of language learning.<\/p>\n

Currently, there are five offerings available in Spanish, ranging from novella to book-length:<\/p>\n

\u201cAlice\u2019s Adventures in Wonderland”<\/p>\n

“The Adventures of Tom Sawyer”<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Hound of the Baskervilles”<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Metamorphosis”<\/p>\n

\u201cTwenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea.\u201d<\/p>\n

If you care to incorporate any of these tried-and-true works into your study routine, the next thing you learn to say in Spanish could very well be:<\/p>\n

\u201cSe encontr\u00f3 sobre su cama convertido en un monstruoso insecto\u201d<\/em> <\/strong>(\u201cHe discovered that in bed he had been changed into a monstrous, verminous bug\u201d) or<\/p>\n

\u201cSe\u00f1or Holmes, \u00a1eran las huellas de un sabueso gigantesco!\u201d<\/em> <\/strong>(\u201cMr. Holmes, they were the footprints of a gigantic hound!\u201d)<\/p>\n

9. Lonweb<\/a>\"lonweb<\/a><\/h3>\n

The title is short for “languages on the web,” and this volunteer-powered site has quite a few of them.<\/p>\n

The homepage design is a little off-putting, but navigate down to the Spanish section and you’ll find a well-curated selection of short stories.<\/p>\n

The Spanish works on this site are fairly straightforward and mostly deal with a certain private detective called Daisy Hamilton. The length varies greatly from story to story, so you should be able to find one that\u2019s about the size you feel like reading.<\/p>\n

For a quick and easy read about how Daisy handles a lost peque\u00f1a<\/em> (little one), give \u201cLa b\u00fasqueda de lorna\u201d <\/em>(\u201cThe Search for Lorna\u201d) a click.<\/p>\n

For something a little more advanced, you can read about the life of a struggling painter in \u201cDe cabeza\u201d <\/em>(\u201cUpside Down\u201d).<\/p>\n

10. Easy Readers<\/a>\"easy<\/h3>\n

From online to on the go, this site offers downloadable e-books of novellas written in parallel text format.<\/p>\n

This is another resource that’s notable for breaking things down pretty clearly by skill level.<\/p>\n

The e-books are sorted using a letters-and-numbers system with stories like “La sorpresa” <\/em>(“The Surprise”) and “El restaurante” <\/em>(The Restaurant”) available to beginners.<\/p>\n

Upper-level learners may want to check out “Amor en el supermercado” <\/em>(“Love in the Supermarket”) or “El caso del cuadro robado” <\/em>(The Case of the Stolen Painting”).<\/p>\n

If some of the resources mentioned so far are a bit outside of your skill range, the beginner-level books (A1) are a particularly good choice, using the simplest of sentences to give the reader a taste of parallel text.<\/p>\n

As for the others, they’re respectably more complex without hitting the range of high literature.<\/p>\n

Be sure to check out the free sample chapters so you can be sure you’re getting something suited to your skill level. Audio is also available for some titles.<\/p>\n

11. Weebly<\/a>\"bilingual-books-spanish-english-free-online\"<\/h3>\n

If you\u2019re a fan of the classics, this site is the place for you!<\/p>\n

The home page lists many translations of popular fiction. Both short stories and longer works have been translated into Spanish as well as French.<\/p>\n

There are audio and video files to be accessed, as well!<\/p>\n

Simply scroll down to choose a title. I chose one of my favorite stories, Bram Stoker\u2019s \u201cDracula,\u201d<\/a> and was thrilled to see the side-by-side text for all three languages is aligned so well that it\u2019s effortless to gaze from one language to another.<\/p>\n

When you get stuck on a word, just look over to find its meaning. For more effective practice, jot down both the word and its meaning for review later on. Soon, you’ll have a new classics-inspired vocabulary list!<\/p>\n

If short stories are more your thing, try Jack London’s “Encender un fuego”<\/em><\/a> (“To Build a Fire”).<\/p>\n

And if you’ve ever wanted to peruse the works of Robert Louis Stevenson, Edgar Allen Poe, Charles Dickens or countless other acclaimed authors, take a moment to look around. I did, and ended up reading some great literature!<\/p>\n

Another great feature of this site is that there’s a brief description of every story as well as the year it was published. You can even find additional tidbits about the authors, too.<\/p>\n

12. AlbaLearning<\/a>\"bilingual-books-spanish-english-free-online\"<\/a><\/h3>\n

AlbaLearning\u2019s parallel texts feature many authors\u2019 classic works. They’re offered in several languages. Many titles will be familiar!<\/p>\n

Miguel Cervantes is on the roster, although his famous \u201cDon Quixote\u201d isn’t available. “La fuerza de la sangre”<\/em><\/a> (“The Force of Blood”) is accessible. If you\u2019ve never read it, I suggest taking a peek. It’s a compelling story in any language!<\/p>\n

Cervantes isn’t the only one whose works are here. James Joyce, Rudyard Kipling, Jack London and a ton of other respected novelists are on the literature list.<\/p>\n

It’s a who’s-who of the writing world and every work is translated into Spanish for us to love and learn from!<\/p>\n

One great bonus to the books on this site is that they’re also available as free audiobooks. The option is right at the top of every section of the book so if you want to hear the story as well as read it, click on that little audio button!<\/p>\n

Accessing bilingual books on this site is uncomplicated.<\/p>\n

Scroll down to find an author you like, then choose one of their titles (click on to the version with the familiar red-and-yellow Spanish flag to get the Spanish version) and start reading.<\/p>\n

13. Free Kids Books<\/a>\"bilingual-books-spanish-english-free-online\"<\/a><\/h3>\n

While the books at Free Kids Books target children, there\u2019s no reason why beginner Spanish learners, or any adult for that matter, can\u2019t enjoy the fun, quick reads.<\/p>\n

They accommodate toddlers to young adults (although this adult read several of their books just this morning).<\/p>\n

Choose a story from the home page. When a book opens, you get the option to read it online or download it for free.<\/p>\n

This website is especially useful because some books include the literal translation in addition to the Spanish and English versions.<\/p>\n

14. Online Spanish Club<\/a>\"bilingual-books-spanish-english-free-online\"<\/a><\/h3>\n

Online Spanish Club has only one book available but it\u2019s formatted and translated so well that it\u2019s worth reading.<\/p>\n

“La sorpresa”<\/em> (“The Surprise”) is about a young couple and a surprise that goes awry. I won’t give up the ending\u2014you’ll have to find that out on your own!<\/p>\n

The translation is given below the Spanish passages and each line is numbered for ease of understanding and for comparative purposes. This is a good way to get a taste of bilingual reading\u2014it\u2019s not too long or complicated!<\/p>\n

15. Beelinguaapp<\/a>\"bilingual-books-spanish-english-free-online\"<\/a><\/h3>\n

This app is available for iPhone<\/a> and Android users<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It shows stories in two languages simultaneously and provides an audio reading so learners can hear the words and their pronunciation.<\/p>\n

“The Adventures of Aladdin,” “Beauty and the Beast” and “The Tortoise and the Hare” are among the stories featured on this app.<\/p>\n

Every sentence is highlighted as it’s read aloud. There\u2019s also an option to reread a line or section so revisiting a portion for clarification couldn\u2019t be easier!<\/p>\n

How to Move Forward with Bilingual Books<\/h2>\n

Discussing parallel text raises an obvious question: What about just reading in Spanish the old-fashioned way?<\/p>\n

Is reading parallel text really better than reading only in your second language?<\/p>\n

As with all study methods, reading parallel text and reading only in Spanish each has their own benefits. Of course, having only Spanish in front of you encourages context-based learning, but parallel text facilitates learning more precise English equivalents and helps ensure you’re following along properly.<\/p>\n

Don’t forget to balance out your learning with other resources so that you’re working on all your language skills at once.<\/p>\n
