The Characteristics of Spanish Text Message Slang\u00a0<\/h2>\n

Omitting letters<\/h3>\n

Like in English, omitting vowels (vocales<\/em>)<\/strong>\u00a0is one of the easiest way to shrtn wrds.\u00a0Genial<\/em> becomes gnl<\/em><\/strong>,\u00a0<\/em>for example.<\/p>\n

Losing consonants works too.\u00a0Ahora <\/em>is often written as\u00a0aora.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

But of course, it’s not always just a simple case of getting rid of the vocales.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

When a word begins with es<\/em><\/strong>, drop those first letters. So estoy<\/em>\u00a0becomes toy<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0and esta<\/em>\u00a0becomes ta<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Switching letters<\/h3>\n

Another Spanish text slang characteristic is switching letters. For example, the letters q<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0and c <\/em><\/strong>both\u00a0change to k<\/em><\/strong>, so quiero<\/em>\u00a0becomes kiero<\/em><\/strong>, aqu\u00ed<\/em>\u00a0becomes aki<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0and qui\u00e9n<\/em>\u00a0becomes kn<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Note that the word que<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0on its own can either change to k<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0or q<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

As you’ve seen, x<\/strong><\/em> is another letter that’s used a lot in Spanish text slang. X<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0usually symbolizes por<\/em><\/strong>, so por favor<\/em>\u00a0(please) becomes xfa.\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>P<\/em>orque<\/em> and \u00bfpor qu\u00e9?\u00a0<\/em>(because and why)\u00a0become xq<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0and xq<\/em>?,\u00a0<\/strong>respectively.<\/p>\n

As por <\/em>and para<\/em> are similar (though sadly not exactly the same<\/a>!), para\u00a0<\/i>becomes xa<\/em><\/strong>. Para qu\u00e9? <\/em>(another version of “why?” or “what for?”)\u00a0becomes xa q<\/em>?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The third and final way you can use the x<\/em> in Spanish slang is to replace ch<\/em><\/strong>. For example, mucho<\/em>\u00a0becomes mxo<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0and chau<\/em>\u00a0becomes xau<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Abbreviations<\/h3>\n

In English, we have FYI, LOL, ROFL and various other abbreviations. In Spanish, there are plenty of phrases that work in a similar way. Te quiero mucho<\/em> becomes tqm<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0or tkm,<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0for example.<\/p>\n

A basic chat message might start like this:<\/p>\n

Have lots of jajajaja<\/em> <\/strong>in the middle while you chat about silly things and have fun.\u00a0To “laugh” in Spanish, you can use jajaja<\/em><\/strong>, jejeje <\/em><\/strong>or\u00a0jijiji<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

An end to a chat might look something like this, assuming you guys like each other:<\/p>\n

You can also end a text with bst <\/strong><\/em>(which means besito<\/em> or “little kiss” in English) and a scattering of emoticons won’t hurt matters either.<\/p>\n

It’s important to note that some Spanish speakers, especially young people, may use the English phrases instead of the Spanish equivalent. For example, they might use LOL (laugh out loud) or OMG (oh my God) in their English forms,\u00a0since\u00a0most people already know what they mean in English.<\/p>\n

Numbers Used in Spanish Text Slang<\/h3>\n

In English, we might end a text with “cul8r.” We can also say something is gr8! The same concept of using letters for the way they sound applies to Spanish words.<\/p>\n

For example, what do you think salu2<\/em><\/strong> means? Salutwo? No, remember, that we’re speaking Spanish here so 2 is pronounced\u00a0dos<\/em>. <\/strong>So\u00a0salu2 <\/em>means saludos<\/em>!<\/em><\/p>\n

There you go. You can now send greetings to people in your text messages.<\/p>\n

Other\u00a0phrases using numbers are:<\/p>\n

Symbols Used in Spanish Text Slang<\/h3>\n

Symbols can also be used in fun ways to make phrases. If you want to say me da igual<\/em> (I don’t mind), for example, you could choose between MDI, me da = <\/strong><\/em>and da =<\/em><\/strong>. (Remember that =<\/strong> is pronounced igual<\/em> in Spanish.)<\/p>\n

The phrase m\u00e1s o menos<\/strong><\/em> is\u00a0used a lot in Spanish to mean “so, so,” “sort of” or “kind of.” Mathematical symbols are used here (m\u00e1s<\/em> = plus, menos<\/em> = minus) so the phrase becomes:\u00a0” + 0 – ” <\/strong><\/em>(Yes, you read that right.)<\/p>\n

You might have also noticed that some Spanish speakers use the @ sign in words like amig@s<\/strong><\/em> or chic@s.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

This isn’t just to look cool, but rather it’s a way of representing that the friends or people could be boys or girls, (where they’d usually be either amigos <\/i>or amigas<\/i>)\u00a0and making Spanish more gender neutral. Got that,\u00a0+ o –<\/strong><\/em>?<\/p>\n

You’ll also notice that, to save space, the upside-down question and exclamation marks aren’t used in Spanish text slang.<\/p>\n

Why You Need to Learn Spanish Text Message Slang<\/h2>\n

It’s not just to keep up with the cool kids.<\/p>\n

There are several practical reasons learning Spanish text slang is useful for anyone.<\/p>\n

Cutting down on characters will save you money on texts in the long run. Your friends will also be glad to no longer receive your four-message-long essays. If you’ve ever had several messages “beep” in quick succession on your phone, you know how annoying this can be.<\/p>\n
