Learning Spanish can have many surprises and challenges, like how the most commonly-used verbs are actually some of the most difficult ones<\/a> to conjugate.\u00a0An effective shortcut for learning tricky verb conjugations is to group verbs with similar conjugations and learn them together.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s what I’m aiming to do with this article: Learn exactly how and when to use two of the most important but irregular Spanish verbs: Tener\u00a0<\/em>(to have) and venir\u00a0<\/em>(to come).<\/strong><\/p>\n

Why Are Tener\u00a0<\/em>and Venir\u00a0<\/em>so Important?<\/h2>\n

The verbs tener <\/em>and venir <\/em>are two of the most common words you\u2019ll see or hear when reading or listening to Spanish<\/a>.<\/strong> (In fact, they’re both among the 100 most common Spanish verbs<\/a>, according to SpanishDictionary.com.) But just because these verbs are frequently used doesn\u2019t mean they\u2019re easy to use.<\/p>\n

In English, some of our most common verbs are irregular. Think about verbs like “have,” “be,” “do,” “go” and “say.” The same is true of Spanish: You\u2019ll find that many essential Spanish verbs, like\u00a0tener<\/em> and\u00a0venir,<\/em>\u00a0have confusing conjugations.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

What\u2019s more, tener <\/em>and venir <\/em>have a variety of different meanings.<\/strong> They’re also used in a number of colloquial expressions<\/a> and phrases.<\/p>\n

Therefore, mastering these two verbs\u2019 various meanings and usages is key to improving your Spanish ability.<\/p>\n

How to Use Tener\u00a0<\/em>and Venir<\/em><\/h2>\n

Mastering\u00a0tener<\/em><\/h3>\n

The verb tener <\/em>means \u201cto have\u201d:<\/p>\n

Me gustar\u00eda tener<\/strong> un perro. <\/em>(I would like to have<\/strong> a dog.)<\/p>\n

Beyond meaning \u201cto have,\u201d tener <\/em>is commonly used in Spanish to describe states of being. <\/strong>This is a type of construction that doesn\u2019t exist in English, but it shows up frequently in Spanish.<\/p>\n

One example is the phrase tener hambre. <\/em>This phrase directly translates to \u201cto have hunger.\u201d Therefore, you might be able to guess that tener hambre <\/em>actually means \u201cto be hungry.\u201d<\/p>\n

Here are some other common phrases in Spanish that work like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\t\n\n\t\n\t\n\t\n\t\n\t

All about venir<\/em><\/h3>\n

The verb venir <\/em>means \u201cto come\u201d:<\/p>\n

\u00bfQuieres venir<\/strong> a mi casa a cenar?<\/em> (Do you want to come<\/strong> to my house to have dinner?)<\/p>\n

It’s important to distinguish between venir <\/em>(to come) and its close relative, ir\u00a0<\/em>(to go).<\/p>\n

While both of these verbs imply movement, their usage depends on where the speaker is when they use the verb, as well as the place that they’re talking about.<\/p>\n

Use venir <\/em>to describe movement towards the place where you are.<\/strong> Use ir <\/em>to talk about movement away from the place where you are.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Some examples will help this make sense. Let\u2019s say I’m sitting on my couch and I call a friend on the phone. I might say:<\/p>\n

\u00bfVas a venir <\/strong>a mi casa esta tarde?<\/em> (Are you going to come <\/strong>to my house this afternoon?)<\/p>\n

I use venir <\/em>because I’m describing someone moving towards the place where I currently am.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, if my friend and I are planning on going out, I might say:<\/p>\n

\u00bfQuieres ir <\/strong>al cine esta tarde?<\/em> (Do you want to go <\/strong>to the movies this afternoon?)<\/p>\n

Since I’m describing movement away from where I am, I use ir.<\/em><\/p>\n

Really, the distinction between venir <\/em>and ir <\/em>is no different than the distinction between the English words \u201ccome\u201d and \u201cgo.\u201d However, this distinction is second-nature to us as native English speakers, whereas its Spanish equivalent might take some more time to get used to.<\/p>\n

This is one of the most common phrases for beginning Spanish speakers, because it’s a great way to introduce yourself. It’s a synonym for ser de\u00a0<\/em>(to be from).<\/p>\n

Venir al pelo<\/em> (To be perfect)<\/strong><\/h3>\n
