But\u00a0<em>t\u00fa<\/em> isn&#8217;t the only informal &#8220;you&#8221; in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/spanish\/learn-latin-american-spanish\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">some regions of Latin America<\/a>. These places also use <em><strong>vos<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Voseo<\/em> is the use of\u00a0<em>vos<\/em><em>. <\/em>And in this post, I&#8217;ll show you where the <em>voseo<\/em> is used, how it works and where to practice it.<\/p>\n<p>[fluentu-toc]<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h2>Where Is <em>Voseo<\/em> Used?<\/h2>\n<p>There are <strong>only three countries where the <\/strong><strong><em>voseo<\/em><\/strong><strong> is used almost exclusively: <\/strong>Uruguay, Paraguay and Argentina. In these countries, you\u2019ll always be addressed as <em>vos<\/em> instead of <em>t\u00fa<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some where it&#8217;s used in specific areas or in certain situations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/spanish\/chilean-spanish-slang-words-phrases\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chile<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/spanish\/guatemalan-slang\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Guatemala<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/spanish\/salvadoran-spanish\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">El Salvador<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/spanish\/honduran-spanish\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Honduras<\/a> and eastern <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/spanish\/bolivian-spanish\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bolivia<\/a>.<\/strong> In these areas, <em>vos\u00a0<\/em>is often used but so is <em>t\u00fa.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/spanish\/costa-rican-slang\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Costa Rica<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/spanish\/nicaraguan-spanish\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nicaragua<\/a>.<\/strong> You&#8217;ll hear the <em>voseo<\/em> in urban areas here, but <em>usted<\/em>\u00a0is the go-to form elsewhere.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Some areas of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/spanish\/colombian-spanish\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Colombia<\/a>. <\/strong>Mostly the\u00a0<em>Paisa<\/em> region in the northwest.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Small regions of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/spanish\/ecuadorian-spanish\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ecuador<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/spanish\/peruvian-slang\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Peru<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/spanish\/cuban-spanish\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cuba<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/spanish\/mexican-slang\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mexico<\/a>. <\/strong>If you aren\u2019t sure, it\u2019s best to stick to <em>t\u00fa<\/em>\u00a0until you hear a native speaker do otherwise.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Zulia state in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/spanish\/venezuelan-slang\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Venezuela<\/a> and the Azuero Peninsula of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/spanish\/panamanian-spanish\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Panama<\/a>.<\/strong> Here, you may hear a unique phenomenon where native speakers use the pronoun\u00a0<em>vos<\/em> but with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/spanish\/vosotros-form\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>vosotros<\/em> conjugations<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Now, how necessary is it that you learn the\u00a0<em>voseo<\/em> if you&#8217;re going to any of these regions?<\/p>\n<p>First, you&#8217;ll be understood everywhere using\u00a0<em>t\u00fa<\/em>. But a few reasons you should learn <em>voseo <\/em>include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Impressing native speakers and integrating into the region&#8217;s culture<\/li>\n<li>Knowing when and when not to use\u00a0<em>vos<\/em> in certain areas<\/li>\n<li><em>Vos<\/em> has a few of its own irregular verbs<\/li>\n<li>Outside of Chile,\u00a0<em>voseo<\/em> conjugations are only used in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/spanish\/spanish-present-tense-endings-conjugations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">present tense<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/spanish\/spanish-commands\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">affirmative command form<\/a> and sometimes the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/spanish\/spanish-subjunctive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">present subjunctive<\/a>.
