So how do you know which word to use?\u00a0And what about other similar words like <em>ah\u00ed, all\u00ed<\/em> and <em>all\u00e1?\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Here we&#8217;ll go through how to use different Spanish location words and when to fall back on <em>aqu\u00ed and ac\u00e1<\/em><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>[fluentu-toc]<\/p>\n<h2>The Difference Between <em>Aqu\u00ed\u00a0<\/em>and <em>Ac\u00e1<\/em><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Both <em>aqu\u00ed\u00a0<\/em>and <em>ac\u00e1 <\/em>can be used to mean &#8220;here,&#8221;<\/strong> either &#8220;in this place&#8221; or &#8220;toward this place.&#8221;\u00a0 <strong>Their meanings are so similar that they&#8217;re pretty much interchangeable,<\/strong> and their more specific nuances depend greatly on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/spanish\/spanish-dialects\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cultural nuances across regions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For example, in Spain you&#8217;ll hear <em>ac\u00e1\u00a0<\/em>used with\u00a0<em>para<\/em> to say &#8220;come (to) here,&#8221; like this: <em>Tiene que venir para ac\u00e1 para la fiesta.<\/em> (She has to come here for the party.)<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, my Peruvian husband could tell me when <em>aqu\u00ed <\/em>and <em>ac\u00e1 <\/em>sounded right or wrong, but couldn&#8217;t tell me exactly why.<\/p>\n<p>There are no clear rules for which word to use and, generally, you can use either one and make perfect sense. <strong>Just pick one and stay consistent.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The best way to get a sense of when things &#8220;sound right,&#8221; the way my husband does is through exposure. Basically, the more authentic Spanish you consume, the better you&#8217;ll get at understanding when to use which word. For instance:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>Aqu\u00ed est\u00e1 mi amiga \u00c1ngela.<\/em> (Here is my friend, Angela.)<\/p>\n<h2>What Does <em>Ac\u00e1<\/em>\u00a0Mean?<\/h2>\n<p>The Spanish word <em>ac\u00e1<\/em> means &#8220;here, close to the speaker.&#8221; But as I&#8217;ve said: It&#8217;s very similar to the word <em>aqu\u00ed<\/em> and in many cases, the two words can be used interchangeably.<\/p>\n<p>However, <em>ac\u00e1\u00a0<\/em>is more often used when the speaker and listener aren&#8217;t in the same place, but the thing you&#8217;re pointing out is near the person speaking.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Here are some examples:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>Ac\u00e1 est\u00e1 mi libro.<\/em> \u2014 My book is here.<br \/>\n<em>Ven ac\u00e1.<\/em> \u2014 Come here.<br \/>\n<em>Ac\u00e1 en Espa\u00f1a, la paella es muy popular.<\/em> \u2014 Here in Spain, paella is very popular.<\/p>\n<p>Note that you can use\u00a0<em>aqu\u00ed<\/em> in any of the above cases and still be correct, but the nuance is a bit different. For instance you can say <em>ven aqu\u00ed<\/em>\u00a0but it sounds more like a command you&#8217;d use with a child, more informal.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Either way, you&#8217;ll be understood no matter which word you use.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>More Location Words: <em>Ah\u00ed<\/em><em>, All\u00ed<\/em> and <em>All\u00e1<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>Spanish actually has even more location words than <em>aqu\u00ed <\/em>and <em>ac\u00e1.\u00a0<\/em>Introducing <em>ah\u00ed, all\u00ed<\/em> and <em>all\u00e1,\u00a0<\/em>all of which mean a variation of &#8220;there.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>How do you know when to use each word? Here&#8217;s a breakdown:\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3><em>Ah\u00ed <\/em>\u2014 There (close by)<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Meaning:<\/strong> There (medium distance, within reach or sight)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Examples:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>El tel\u00e9fono est\u00e1 ah\u00ed, en la mesa.<\/em> (The phone is there, on the table.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>\u00bfQuieres sentarte ah\u00ed conmigo?<\/em> (Do you want to sit there with me?)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>Deja las llaves ah\u00ed sobre el mostrador.<\/em> (Leave the keys there on the counter.)<\/p>\n<h3><em>All\u00ed<\/em> \u2014 There (further away)<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Meaning:<\/strong> There (greater distance, further away, not necessarily within sight)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Examples:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>Mira, mi casa est\u00e1 all\u00ed, al otro lado de la calle.<\/em> (Look, my house is over there, across the street.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>Los ni\u00f1os juegan all\u00ed en el parque.<\/em> (The children are playing over there in the park.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>\u00bfVes a Mar\u00eda? Est\u00e1 all\u00ed saludando a alguien.<\/em> (Do you see Maria?
