The \u00d1<\/em>\u00a0is a completely separate letter that is independent of the\u00a0ene<\/em> (letter N) in the Spanish dictionary, according to the Real Academia Espa\u00f1ola<\/a> (Royal Spanish Academy), the language authority in Spain.<\/p>\n

How Do You Pronounce \u00d1<\/em>?<\/h2>\n

This unique letter is similar to the \/ny\/ sound in the English word “cany<\/strong>on.”<\/p>\n

You’ve probably heard it in the Spanish word pi\u00f1a<\/em> (pineapple) and se\u00f1or<\/em> (sir). Say these words out loud slowly and you’ll notice that you have to make an N sound first, followed quickly by a Y sound.<\/p>\n

To make the \u201c\u00f1\u201d sound, just follow these three steps:<\/p>\n

1. Put your tongue on the roof of your mouth, right behind your top front teeth<\/p>\n

2. Say the letter \u201cn”<\/p>\n

3. Immediately after, bring your tongue down and say \u201cyay\u201d<\/p>\n

In Spanish-speaking countries, computers come with an\u00a0\u00d1\u00a0<\/em>key just to the right of the L, but if you have an English keyboard (or some other system), you’ll have to know the trick to typing the letter.<\/p>\n
