So, you’ve learned how to conjugate in French and talk about things you’re doing,\u00a0But how do you talk about things you’re not\u00a0<\/strong>doing?<\/p>\n

Knowing how to negate your sentences in French will help you communicate exactly what you mean (or don’t mean). You can clear up a lot with\u00a0<\/em>la n\u00e9gation<\/em> (negation), so let\u2019s start with the basics and build from there.<\/p>\n

Basic French Negation Using\u00a0Ne… Pas<\/em><\/h2>\n

The simplest way to negate a sentence in French is to write\u00a0ne <\/em>or n’ <\/em><\/strong>before the main verb and\u00a0pas<\/em> after that verb. <\/strong>This typically applies in simple tenses (i.e., when there\u2019s only one conjugated verb in the sentence).<\/p>\n

Je\u00a0ne<\/strong> parle\u00a0pas\u00a0<\/strong>espagnol. <\/em>(I don’t speak Spanish.)<\/p>\n

Il\u00a0ne<\/strong>\u00a0va\u00a0pas<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>\u00e0 l’\u00e9cole demain.<\/em> <\/em>(He’s not going to school tomorrow.)<\/p>\n

While the ne… pas <\/i>construction is technically a negative adverb, other adverbs can either be used in place of or alongside pas<\/em><\/strong> to negate the verb.<\/p>\n

Using Adjectives<\/h3>\n

Like adverbs, adjectives can be used in place of pas<\/i>\u00a0in the negative construction.<\/p>\n

This is different from using a negative adverb\u2014the adjective must negate the following noun<\/strong> and therefore doesn\u2019t follow the helper verb if there is one.<\/p>\n
