It&#8217;s notoriously challenging, but something you&#8217;ll need to master in order to speak French fluently.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll give you a great overview of what it is, when to use it, and how to do basic conjugations, with lots of examples. Keep reading to learn everything you\u2019ll need to start acing <em>le subjoncif<\/em> (the subjunctive).<\/p>\n<p>[fluentu-toc]<\/p>\n<h2>What is the French Subjunctive?<\/h2>\n<p>The French subjunctive is a <strong>verb mood, used primarily to express uncertainty, doubt and emotions. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As we will cover, there are certain phrases and verbs that trigger this. Like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/french\/french-indicative\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the indicative<\/a>, the subjunctive has present and past tense forms.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We use subjunctive phrases in English, but they are nowhere near as common as they are in French. Here are some examples of the subjunctive in use in French:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>Je veux que vous <strong>fassiez<\/strong> la vaisselle.<\/em>\u00a0(I want you to do the dishes.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>Il ne croit pas qu\u2019elle <strong>l\u2019aime<\/strong>.<\/em>\u00a0(He doesn\u2019t believe that she loves him.)<\/p>\n<h2>How to Use the French Subjunctive<\/h2>\n<p>The French subjunctive usually has this structure:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><strong>Subject 1 + verb + <em>que<\/em>\/<em>qui<\/em> (that\/who) + subject 2 + verb<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;ll need the following components for the subjunctive:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Two separate subjects<\/li>\n<li><em>Que<\/em> or <em>qui<\/em><\/li>\n<li>The expression of uncertainty, desire, doubt, regret, preference, opinion or emotion<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The subjunctive is also always a dependent clause.<\/p>\n<h2>When to Use the French Subjunctive<\/h2>\n<p>As detailed above, the subjunctive is used after certain verbs or phrases and preceded by the connecter <em>que<\/em>. Most of these express one of the five categories for the subjunctive: emotion, desire, doubt, regret, preferences\/opinions or uncertainty.<\/p>\n<p>These are usually variations of \u201cprovided that\u201d and \u201calthough.\u201d<\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc\">\n<li><em><strong>Sans que<\/strong><\/em> (without)<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Bien que<\/strong><\/em> (so that)<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Pourvu que<\/strong><\/em> (provided that)<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Jusqu\u2019\u00e0 ce que<\/strong><\/em> (until)<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Afin que<\/strong><\/em> (for)<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Pour que<\/strong><\/em> (for)<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Avant que<\/strong><\/em> (before)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Avant que<\/em> is always followed by the subjunctive, but <em>apr\u00e8s que<\/em> (after) is always followed by the indicative.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a logical reason for this! Since <em>avant que<\/em> means before, there\u2019s a bit of doubt and uncertainty because the event or action hasn&#8217;t happened yet. But <em>apr\u00e8s que<\/em> translates to after, when there would be certainty since the event has already taken place.<\/p>\n<h2>When Not to Use the Subjunctive<\/h2>\n<p>Phrases that talk about an opinion, desire or emotion <strong>aren\u2019t always followed by the subjunctive.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is the case when doubt isn&#8217;t expressed or the event has already taken place and is thus clear. For example:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>Il est clair qu\u2019il ne veut pas le faire. <\/em>(It\u2019s obvious that he doesn\u2019t want to do it.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>Il est certain que vous aurez besoin d\u2019aide.<\/em>\u00a0(It\u2019s certain that you will need help.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>Il est s\u00fbr que le train est supprim\u00e9.<\/em>\u00a0(It is sure that the train is canceled.)<\/p>\n<p>All of these examples express clarity (&#8220;obvious,&#8221; &#8220;certain,&#8221; &#8220;surely&#8221;), so you don&#8217;t need the subjunctive.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a less intuitive example:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>Il est probable que la banque soit ferm\u00e9e aujourd\u2019hui. <\/em>(It\u2019s probable that the bank is closed today.)<\/p>\n<p>In English, it sounds like there is some doubt because of the word &#8220;probably,&#8221; but in French, this is considered an indicative-triggering phrase.<\/p>\n<h2>Regular Verbs in the Subjunctive<\/h2>\n<h3>How to Conjugate Verbs in the Subjunctive<\/h3>\n<p>Forming the subjunctive is pretty simple for regular verbs:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Subjunctive Present<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Start with the conjugated form of the verb for <em>ils\/elles\u00a0<\/em>(third-person plural), then remove the &#8220;-<em>ent<\/em>&#8221; ending to get the present stem. You can then add the following subjunctive endings depending on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/french\/french-pronouns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the
