In English-language contexts, <em>coquilles Saint-Jacques <\/em>suggests <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/food\/2018\/dec\/12\/how-to-cook-the-perfect-coquilles-st-jacques\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a particular preparation of scallops<\/a> involving a wine sauce and breadcrumbs. Plus&#8230;<\/li>\n<li>There are some French animal words that refer specifically to the female or male of the species (<em>un cheval<\/em> is &#8220;a horse,&#8221; but <em>un \u00e9talon<\/em> is &#8220;a stallion&#8221; and <em>une jument<\/em> is &#8220;a mare.&#8221;)\u00a0However&#8230;<\/li>\n<li>When talking about a type of animal <em>in general<\/em>, French tends to default to one gender or the other\u00a0(usually masculine, but not always).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This post isn&#8217;t meant to be a comprehensive look at all of the variations on the nouns and animals included.
