French is a language that really embraces its greetings, so learning how to greet someone and introduce yourself is especially important in the language.<\/p>\n

When you enter a boulangerie\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong><\/em> (bakery), \u00e9picerie<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong><\/em> (grocery store) or bistro<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0<\/em>(small restaurant), it’s generally expected that you greet the employees there even if you don’t necessarily require service at that time.\u00a0<\/p>\n

You can use the informal version with people younger than you or if you find that your conversation partner is referring to you as tu<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0<\/strong><\/em> (you \u2014 informal), but it’s often best to start with the formal vous<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0<\/strong><\/em> (you \u2014 formal).<\/p>\n

Now that your conversation partner knows your name, they may want to know some more information about you! Sharing basic information is the first step to making French friends and acquaintances.<\/p>\n

It’s always good to meet people, but French-speaking friends are especially valuable if you’re trying to learn the language. They can help you with tricky aspects of language-learning as well as introduce you to the culture of France<\/a> and the Francophone world<\/a>.<\/p>\n

This question is generally asking for a country or region of origin, but you’re welcome to name your city or town if it’s a major or well-known one like New York City or London.<\/p>\n

Or you may be asked:<\/p>\n

As in many parts of the world, it’s sometimes perceived as impolite to ask about age in France, especially if you’re a man asking a woman her age. But if it does come up:<\/p>\n

You’ll notice that in French, you use\u00a0avoir<\/strong><\/em> (to have) when talking about how old you are, not\u00a0\u00eatre<\/em><\/strong> (to be). So, it’s kind of like saying: “How many years do you have?” “I have … years.”<\/p>\n

Occupation<\/h3>\n

Another common question that people will ask during introductory conversations is “what do you do for work?” In French, you ask:<\/p>\n

To answer, simple say:<\/p>\n

A: <\/strong>J<\/em><\/strong>e suis<\/em>…<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/em> (I am) and state the job or profession<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Keep in mind that you don’t add the article “a” (un\u00a0<\/em>or\u00a0une)<\/em> before the job in French like in English. For example, you would simply say:<\/p>\n

A: <\/strong>Je suis professeur.<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/em> (I am a teacher.)<\/p>\n

Learning languages is fun, and since you’re learning French, you’ll probably get asked about what languages you speak. People may ask:\u00a0<\/p>\n

To answer, you say:<\/p>\n

A: <\/em><\/strong>Je parle…<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/em> (I speak…) and then name the language.<\/p>\n

You can add multiple languages by linking them with\u00a0et\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>(and).<\/p>\n

You can also say what languages you’re studying by saying<\/p>\n

A: <\/strong>J<\/strong>‘<\/em>\u00e9tudie…<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong><\/em> (I am studying).<\/p>\n

For example, as a learner, you might say:<\/p>\n

A: <\/strong>J<\/strong>e parle anglais et j’\u00e9tudie fran\u00e7ais<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0<\/em>(I speak English and I’m learning French).<\/p>\n

Hobbies<\/h3>\n

Okay, your conversation is going well: you’re past the basics and now you need something interesting to talk about. This is a great time to discuss interests and hobbies. Someone may ask:<\/p>\n

\nQ: <\/em><\/strong>Qu’est-ce que vous aimez faire <\/em>?<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/em> (What do you like to do? [formal])<\/p>\n

To answer, you can say:<\/p>\n

A: <\/strong>J’aime…<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0<\/strong><\/em> (I like) and then list a noun or a verb.<\/p>\n

For example, I would say something like:<\/p>\n

A<\/strong>: <\/strong><\/em>J’aime voyager, lire et \u00e9tudier les langues \u00e9trang\u00e8res.<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0<\/strong><\/em> (I like to travel, read and study foreign languages).<\/p>\n

You could also say:<\/p>\n

A: <\/strong>Je m’int\u00e9resse \u00e0…<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0<\/strong><\/em> (I am interested in) and then name a noun or two, such as: like,<\/p>\n

A: <\/strong>Je m’int\u00e9resse \u00e0 la culture fran\u00e7aise.<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0<\/strong><\/em> (I am interested in French culture).<\/p>\n

French Pleasantries and Goodbyes<\/h2>\n

All good things come to an end, don’t they?<\/p>\n

When the conversation is over, you could simply say:<\/p>\n

Enchant\u00e9<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0<\/strong><\/em> (charmed) to indicate you’re happy to meet someone.<\/p>\n

In formal contexts, you could say:<\/p>\n

C’est un <\/em><\/strong>plaisir de faire votre connaissance<\/strong>.<\/em> (It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance.)
\nC’est un <\/em><\/strong>plaisir de vous rencontrer<\/strong><\/em>.<\/strong><\/em> (It is a pleasure to meet you).<\/p>\n

Note the difference in pronoun use here. In the first sentence, you are using the possessive pronoun<\/a> votre <\/em>(your), whereas in the second, you have to use the object pronoun<\/a> vous <\/em>(you).<\/p>\n

To say goodbye, say:<\/p>\n

au revoir<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/em> (goodbye)
\n\u00e0 bient\u00f4t<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/em> (see you later)<\/p>\n

\u00c0 bient\u00f4t\u00a0<\/em>is less formal than au revoir<\/em>, but I’d say it’s an appropriate way to say goodbye to your nouvel ami fran\u00e7ais<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/em> \u00a0<\/em>(new French friend).<\/p>\n

At this point, you may be thinking: sure, reading and typing these greetings is one thing. But what about when I actually want to say<\/em> them?<\/p>\n

We don’t all have the opportunity to step out the front door and introduce ourselves to a native French speaker. But that’s no excuse not to practice your French listening and speaking skills!<\/p>\n
