Sometimes, the phrase is shortened simply to <em><strong>la Saint-Sylvestre \u00a0<\/strong><\/em>(Saint Sylvester). The French refer to the feast day when talking about New Year&#8217;s Eve.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s another non-religious term for New Year&#8217;s Eve as well, which is <em><strong>le r\u00e9veillon \u00a0<\/strong><\/em>(evening party\/feast) or <em><strong>le r\u00e9veillon du premier de l&#8217;an \u00a0<\/strong><\/em>(the evening party\/feast for the first of the year).<em>\u00a0<\/em>These phrases can be used to refer to either New Year&#8217;s Eve night or even New Year&#8217;s Eve dinner.<\/p>\n<p>Here are two example sentences:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>Il y a un r\u00e9veillon chez moi pour la nouvelle ann\u00e9e. <\/em> <br \/>\nThere is an evening dinner party\/feast at my house for the New Year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>On va passer le r\u00e9veillon du premier de l&#8217;an ensemble. <\/em> <br \/>\nWe&#8217;re going to spend New Year&#8217;s Eve together.<\/p>\n<h3><em>Le jour de l&#8217;an  <\/em><em>\u2014<\/em>\u00a0New Year&#8217;s Day<\/h3>\n<p>You can also say<em><strong> le Nouvel An \u00a0<\/strong><\/em>(the New Year).<\/p>\n<h3><em>Minuit  \u2014<\/em>\u00a0Midnight<\/h3>\n<h3><em>Le 31 <span style=\"font-size: 18.72px\">d\u00e9cembre<\/span>\u00a0 \u2014 <\/em>December 31st<\/h3>\n<p>Let me take this opportunity to remind you that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/french\/french-months-of-the-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">months are <em>not<\/em> capitalized in French<\/a>!<\/p>\n<h3><em>Le premier janvier  \u2014 <\/em>January 1st<\/h3>\n<h3><em>Compter  \u2014 <\/em>To count<\/h3>\n<p>While<em><strong> le compte \u00e0 rebours <\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>is French for &#8220;countdown,&#8221; or &#8220;counting backward,&#8221; it&#8217;s more common to simply say something along the lines of <em><strong>on compte les secondes avant la nouvelle ann\u00e9e <\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>(we count the seconds before the New Year).<\/p>\n<h3><em>La fin d&#8217;ann\u00e9e  \u2014 <\/em>The end of the year<\/h3>\n<h3><em>Meilleurs v\u0153ux  \u2014 <\/em>Best wishes<\/h3>\n<p>You could also add to this statement by saying<em><strong> meilleurs v\u0153ux pour la nouvelle ann\u00e9e <\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>(best wishes for the New Year).<\/p>\n<h3><em>Joyeuses f\u00eates !  \u2014 <\/em>Happy Holidays!<\/h3>\n<p>While <em>joyeuses f\u00eates\u00a0<\/em>can be used for any holiday, you can also say<em><strong> bonnes f\u00eates de fin d&#8217;ann\u00e9e \u00a0<\/strong><\/em>which literally translates to &#8220;Happy end-of-the-year holidays.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As a side note, all of the above four phrases\u2014<em>meilleurs\u00a0v\u0153ux, meilleurs\u00a0v\u0153ux pour la nouvelle ann\u00e9e, joyeuses f\u00eates\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>bonnes f\u00eates de fin<\/em> <em>d&#8217;ann\u00e9e<\/em>\u2014could be used on holiday cards in place of the popular English phrase &#8220;Season&#8217;s Greetings.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>Words for Your French New Year&#8217;s Celebrations<\/h2>\n<h3><em>La f\u00eate  <\/em><em>\u2014 <\/em>Party<\/h3>\n<h3><em>C\u00e9l\u00e9brer  \/ F\u00eater  <\/em><em>\u2014 <\/em>To celebrate<\/h3>\n<p>While\u00a0<em>c\u00e9l\u00e9brer\u00a0<\/em>literally means &#8220;to celebrate,&#8221; it&#8217;s pretty much interchangeable with\u00a0<em>f\u00eater<\/em>,<em>\u00a0<\/em>which would more literally mean, &#8220;to party.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3><em>Danser  <\/em><em>\u2014 <\/em>To dance<\/h3>\n<h3><em>Les confettis  <\/em><em>\u2014 <\/em>Confetti<\/h3>\n<h3><em>Le karaok\u00e9  <\/em><em>\u2014 <\/em>Karaoke<\/h3>\n<h3><em>La musique  <\/em><em>\u2014 <\/em>Music<\/h3>\n<h3><em>Les amis  <\/em><em>\/ amies  <\/em><em>\u2014 <\/em>Friends<\/h3>\n<p>Don&#8217;t forget to add the &#8220;e&#8221; if you need to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/french\/french-gender-rules\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">make the word feminine<\/a> to talk about an all-female group of friends.<\/p>\n<h3><em>Les feux d&#8217;artifice  <\/em><em>\u2014 <\/em>Fireworks<\/h3>\n<p>The literal translation is &#8220;artificial fire.&#8221; French sure is poetic, isn&#8217;t it!<\/p>\n<h3><em>Le gui  <\/em><em>\u2014 <\/em>Mistletoe<\/h3>\n<p>You may associate mistletoe more with Christmas than any other holiday, but in France, it&#8217;s quite common to kiss under the mistletoe during New Year&#8217;s festivities as well.<\/p>\n<h3><em>S&#8217;embrasser  <\/em><em>\u2014 <\/em>To kiss<\/h3>\n<p>This is just one of the many ways you can talk about kissing in French. You can also say <em><strong>faire une bise \u00e0 <\/strong><\/em> or <strong><em>donner un bisou \u00e0 \u00a0<\/em><\/strong>which both mean &#8220;to give a kiss to someone.&#8221;<b><i>\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>I recommend one of these other sayings if you want to imply a simple peck or friendly kiss. Otherwise, reserve\u00a0<em>s&#8217;embrasser<\/em><strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>for when you share a more passionate kiss with your significant other.<\/p>\n<h3><em>Le champagne  <\/em><em>\u2014 <\/em>Champagne<\/h3>\n<h3><em>Un toast  <\/em><em>\u2014 <\/em>To toast<\/h3>\n<p><em>Un toast<\/em><strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>is an anglicism, meaning the French adopted the noun from English.<\/p>\n<p>However, in order to talk about the act of toasting someone, you need to use either<em><strong> porter un toast \u00a0<\/strong><\/em>(to propose a toast) or<em><strong> lever son verre \u00e0 <\/strong><\/em> (to raise your glass to someone).<\/p>\n<h3><em>Boire  <\/em><em>\u2014 <\/em>To drink<\/h3>\n<h2>New Year&#8217;s Resolutions in French<\/h2>\n<h3><em>Perdre du poids  <\/em><em>\u2014 <\/em>To lose weight<\/h3>\n<h3><em>Manger plus sainement  <\/em><em>\u2014 <\/em>To eat healthier<\/h3>\n<p>As a side note, <em><strong>la sant\u00e9 \u00a0<\/strong><\/em>means &#8220;health,&#8221; and the phrase <em><strong>en bonne sant\u00e9 <\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>means &#8220;healthy,&#8221; or more literally &#8220;in good health.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3><i><em>Faire plus\u00a0<\/em><i>d&#8217;exercice <\/i> <\/i><em>\u2014 <\/em>To exercise more<\/h3>\n<p>Remember that there&#8217;s no verb in French that means &#8220;to exercise.&#8221; Rather, you need to use the whole phrase above, which literally translates to &#8220;to do more exercise.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>You can also use the phrase <em><strong>faire du sport \u00a0<\/strong><\/em>(to do sport). Note that the word<em> faire <\/em> (to do\/to make) is used rather than the verb <em>jouer <\/em>\u00a0(to play) when talking about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/french\/french-sports-vocabulary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sports in French<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><em>Obtenir une promotion  <\/em><em>\u2014 <\/em>To get a promotion<\/h3>\n<h3><em>Changer de travail  <\/em><em>\u2014 <\/em>To change jobs<\/h3>\n<h3><em>\u00c9conomiser de l&#8217;argent  <\/em><em>\u2014 <\/em>To save money<\/h3>\n<p>There&#8217;s another way to talk about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/french\/money-in-french\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">money in French<\/a>, which can be especially useful when discussing saving for something specific. The phrase is<em><strong> mettre de\u00a0c\u00f4t\u00e9 \u00a0<\/strong><\/em>(to put aside).<\/p>\n<p>For example, you could say, <em>Je mets de c\u00f4t\u00e9 une somme suffisante pour acheter un nouvel appartement.  <\/em>(I&#8217;m putting aside a sufficient sum in order to buy a new apartment.)<\/p>\n<p>The English translation may sound a bit formal to your ear at first, but it&#8217;s perfectly standard to use this construction in French.<\/p>\n<h3><em>Passer plus de temps en famille  <\/em><em>\u2014 <\/em>To spend more time with family<\/h3>\n<p>Notice the use of the preposition <em>en \u00a0<\/em>(in)<em>\u00a0<\/em>in this phrase. It&#8217;s not the same as its English equivalent, which uses the preposition &#8220;with&#8221; (<em>avec <\/em>\u00a0in French).<\/p>\n<h3><em>Se faire de nouveaux amis  \/ Se faire de nouvelles amies <\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>\u2014 <\/em>To make new friends<\/h3>\n<h3><em>Apprendre une nouvelle comp\u00e9tence  <\/em><em>\u2014 <\/em>To learn a new skill<\/h3>\n<h3><em>\u00catre plus social  \/ sociale <\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>\u2014 <\/em>To be more outgoing<\/h3>\n<h3><em>Prendre un nouveau passe-temps  \u2014 <\/em>To take up a new hobby<\/h3>\n<p>While this is probably the most commonly used phrase in French, some people do replace <em>passe-temps \u00a0<\/em>(pastime) with the English word &#8220;hobby.&#8221; In other words, the anglicism is also used.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s an example:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>J&#8217;ai besoin de trouver un autre hobby. <\/em> (I need to find another hobby.)<\/p>\n<h2>Where to Get a Taste of the French New Year<\/h2>\n<p>If you&#8217;re looking for a fun way to incorporate French into your New Year&#8217;s celebrations, there are many ways to do so <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/french\/learn-french-at-home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">from the comfort of your own home<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For starters, you can improve your reading skills with some <strong>New Year&#8217;s themed poems<\/strong>. Believe it or not, there\u00a0are tons of them online, and my personal favorite sites on which to find them are <a href=\"https:\/\/dicocitations.lemonde.fr\/poemes-bonne-annee.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dico-Citations<\/a> and <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mon-poeme.fr\/poesies-poemes-nouvel-an\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mon Po\u00e8me<\/a><\/em>\u00a0(My Poem).<\/p>\n<p>Or, if you&#8217;re more of an auditory learner, try listening to <strong>Lokassa\u00a0Ya M&#8217;bongo&#8217;s famous New Year song called <em>&#8220;Bonne ann\u00e9e&#8221;<\/em><\/strong> (&#8220;Happy New Year&#8221;).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><lite-youtube videoid=\"d7DnV6N4Vkg\"><\/lite-youtube><\/p>\n<p>For those of you who love comedy and enjoy watching videos on YouTube, check out this hilarious video from online comedian\u00a0Hassan.<\/p>\n<p><lite-youtube videoid=\"9TkXItN6XM8\"><\/lite-youtube><\/p>\n<p>He parodies what the New Year is really like and talks about expectations versus reality.
