Observe.<\/p>\n<p>In the phrase, <em>Il marche tout doucement<\/em>, the word\u00a0<em>tout<\/em>\u00a0almost means &#8220;very,&#8221; and the phrase as a whole means &#8220;He walks very softly\/quietly.&#8221; In this case, the word\u00a0<em>tout<\/em> is acting as an adverb, as it is modifying the adverb <em>doucement.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Adverb-ception, much? In this situation and others like it,\u00a0<em>tout<\/em> is invariable. That means it won&#8217;t change form to\u00a0<em>tous<\/em>,\u00a0<em>toute\u00a0<\/em>or\u00a0<em>toutes<\/em>. Ever. It is just\u00a0<em>tout<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>However, things are more complicated <strong>when the adverbial <i>tout<\/i> modifies an adjective<\/strong>.
