Source out the silent letters<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">French does have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/french\/french-spelling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">some silent letters<\/a>, so once you&#8217;re feeling good about your vowels, continue on to these quiet critters.\u00a0While \u201ch\u201d is probably the most popular of the silent letters, there are others that\u00a0pop up from time to time. <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>The letter &#8220;h.&#8221;<\/strong>\u00a0If a word\u00a0begins with an \u201ch,\u201d normally it&#8217;s silent, and the\u00a0following vowel is pronounced as the first letter.\u00a0<\/span>For example, words such as<em> heure<\/em>\u00a0(hour), <em>homme<\/em> (man) and <em>haut\u00a0<\/em>(high) all begin with a silent &#8220;h.&#8221;\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Final consonants.\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, final consonants in words are often not pronounced. The word<em> blanc<\/em><\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(white), for example, is pronounced with a soft ending. When \u201ce\u201d appears at the end of a word, it&#8217;s also rarely pronounced. If an \u201ce\u201d is placed after a consonant\u00a0of\u00a0a feminine word, the final consonant is pronounced with the \u201ce\u201d remaining silent.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using <em>petit\u00a0<\/em>(small) in its masculine form, for example, you would not pronounce the final &#8220;t.&#8221; But if you were describing a feminine object as being <em>petite\u00a0<\/em>(small), you would complete the word with a \/t\/ sound.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Using a gender guide in French can help you to focus on the differences in\u00a0pronunciation and on hard and soft endings. Spoken at the back of the throat, it has a much more guttural sound than in English, and is always pronounced as a strong sound. <em>Merci\u00a0<\/em>(thank you), for example, has the &#8220;r&#8221; spoken at the back of the throat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"French Phonetics\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/0761817786\/?tag=fluentu-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-amazonimages=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"French Phonetics\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/41Du6jDujOL.jpg\" alt=\"French Phonetics\" width=\"150\" height=\"180\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As with many rules, there are exceptions that can be picked up with practice, so a great pronunciation guide will really serve you well.\u00a0The book\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/French-Phonetics-Correct-Pronunciation-dExercises\/dp\/0761817786?tag=fluentu-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201cFrench Phonetics\u201d<\/a><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0draws\u00a0attention to the important differences between individual words. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How a letter is pronounced when it falls at the start, middle or end of a word can differ massively. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As in the other steps, choose a new type of consonant every few weeks and focus on its different possible pronunciations.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pronouncing a group of 10 words that all feature the same consonant sound can be a great warm-up.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>5. Focus on the boundaries between spoken words<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many French words are often run together and pronounced as a continuous phrase. For the most part, words ending in a consonant that are followed by a word starting with a vowel are run together; the final consonant of the first word is sounded at the start of the second word.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mon amour <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(my love), for example, is pronounced like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mo n\u2019amour.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In French, final consonants are not pronounced unless there is a vowel directly after it. In cases like this, the vowel of the following word triggers the pronunciation of the final consonant.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This clear intro to liaisons on <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawlessfrench.com\/pronunciation\/liaisons\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lawless French<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0is a good place to start practicing French liaisons. Learn how to stress your words correctly<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike in English, French usually stresses the final syllable in a word. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wordreference.com\/fr\/French-Pronunciation.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>WordReference.com<\/strong><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be particularly useful site for\u00a0pronunciation information.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>The University of Texas&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.laits.utexas.edu\/fi\/html\/pho\/03.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Department of French and Italian<\/a><\/strong> has an awesome site with everything you could need to know about stresses in French words, including learning exercises. Listen to the difference between English and French stresses, and then try it for yourself.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>French phonetics create the momentum that will steadily propel you toward fluency. Slowly approach each sound one at a time to really sink into the French language!<\/p>\n<h2>Why are phonetics important for speaking French?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>They help you pronounce words in French.\u00a0<\/strong>In the early stages of French conversation, phonetics are possibly the most important element because they give you a step-by-step guide to speaking in French.
