Adjectives After the Noun<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Start cheering, because most descriptive adjectives go after the noun! Unlike in English, adjectives’ default spot is after the noun in French.<\/p>\n

So if we’re talking\u00a0color<\/a>, taste, personality<\/a>, mood<\/a>, nationality<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0religious affiliation,\u00a0<\/i><\/strong>then they go after the noun. Basically, when in doubt, just remember BANGS<\/strong>, (or B-FANGS<\/strong> if you’re up for using a rapper name), and in all other cases, tack it after the noun.<\/p>\n

Ah, everyone’s favorite grammar rule: gender agreement! As you know, adjectives need to agree with the noun they are describing. For example, you can have either une vieille pomme \u00a0<\/em>(an old apple) or un vieux yaourt \u00a0<\/em>(an old yogurt).<\/p>\n

The Easy to Remember Endings<\/strong><\/p>\n

With most adjectives you just tack on an e<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>for feminine, an\u00a0s<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>for masculine plural and an\u00a0es<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>for feminine plural. This works with a lot of the common adjectives, like vert\/e\/s\u00a0<\/em>(green) and content\/e\/s\u00a0<\/em>(happy).\u00a0<\/p>\n

You’re likely to come across more exceptions as your French gets more advanced. For the most part, they follow the rules we mentioned before, and these will soon come naturally just from immersion<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Turning Adjectives into Adverbs<\/h3>\n

Luckily, if you like your language extra-flowery and descriptive, French has adverbs<\/a> just like English does. Adverbs describe a verb and usually<\/strong> end in\u00a0ment<\/strong>,\u00a0<\/em>kind of like how English adverbs usually end in ly<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, not everything about French adverbs is the same as in English, so let’s hit a few points that will help you use them correctly.<\/p>\n

Adjectives You’re Allowed to Turn into Adverbs<\/strong><\/p>\n

So there’s a little differentiation we can make between types of adjectives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\t\n\n\t\n\t

Generally speaking, you can turn a qualitative adjective into an adverb, but not a classifying adjective.<\/p>\n

Kind of like how “beautifully” is a perfectly acceptable adverb in English, but Frenchly is just…not a word.<\/p>\n

In addition, just because an adverb exists in English doesn’t mean it does in French. Though there’s usually a word that exists to express it, it may not have been the translation you were trying for in the first place.<\/p>\n

Luckily, there aren’t too many exceptions:\u00a0<\/p>\n

Bref\/br\u00e8ve<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(brief)\u00a0<\/em>becomes bri\u00e8vement <\/strong><\/em>\u00a0<\/i>(briefly).<\/p>\n

Gentil\/gentille<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>(nice) becomes gentiment \u00a0<\/strong><\/em>(nicely).<\/p>\n

And of course, the two adverbs that haunt French learners:<\/p>\n

B<\/strong><\/em>on <\/i><\/strong>(good) becomes bien <\/strong><\/em>\u00a0(well).<\/p>\n

Meilleur<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(best)\u00a0<\/em>becomes mieux \u00a0<\/strong><\/em>(best).<\/p>\n

Now don’t you forget it again!<\/p>\n

It can be difficult to grasp at first, but remember: Practice makes perfect.<\/p>\n
