Now you know what French people mean when they&#8217;re attempting to speak English and ask, &#8220;What society do you work for?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>La <strong>soci\u00e9t\u00e9<\/strong> a r\u00e9cemment lanc\u00e9 un nouveau produit sur le march\u00e9 international.<\/em> (The <strong>company<\/strong> recently launched a new product in the international market.)<\/p>\n<h2>2.<em> Entreprise <\/em>(Company)<\/h2>\n<p>If you&#8217;re looking for a less confusing term for &#8220;company,&#8221; you can also use this one.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>Notre <strong>entreprise<\/strong> se sp\u00e9cialise dans le d\u00e9veloppement de logiciels sur mesure.<\/em> (Our <strong>business<\/strong> specializes in custom software development.)<\/p>\n<h2>3.<strong><em> Bo\u00eete <\/em>(Company \u2014\u00a0 Informal)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>If you want an even more informal term for &#8220;company,&#8221; and the people involved are fine with it, use <em>bo\u00eete<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>La <strong>bo\u00eete<\/strong> organise une r\u00e9union importante demain pour discuter des objectifs annuels.<\/em> (The <strong>company<\/strong> is organizing an important meeting tomorrow to discuss annual goals.)<\/p>\n<h2>4. <em>Bonjour <\/em>(Hello, Good Day)<\/h2>\n<p>You&#8217;re likely already familiar with this go-to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/french\/learn-french-greetings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">French greeting<\/a>, but don&#8217;t make the mistake of greeting someone with it in the hallway after you&#8217;ve already used it at the beginning of the day. It&#8217;s employed strictly once per day.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em><strong>Bonjour<\/strong> \u00e0 tous les participants de la conf\u00e9rence ! Nous sommes ravis de vous accueillir.<\/em> (<strong>Hello<\/strong> to all conference participants! We are delighted to welcome you.)<\/p>\n<h2>5.<em> Salut <\/em>(Hey)<\/h2>\n<p>Once you&#8217;ve used up your daily quota of\u00a0<em>bonjour<\/em>, you could say <em>salut <\/em>instead. Note, however, that most French coworkers are more likely to just nod or say nothing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em><strong>Salut<\/strong>, comment \u00e7a va ? C&#8217;est toujours un plaisir de vous voir \u00e0 nos \u00e9v\u00e9nements.<\/em> (<strong>Hi<\/strong>, how are you? It&#8217;s always a pleasure to see you at our events.)<\/p>\n<h2>6.<em> Se serrer la main <\/em>(Handshakes)<\/h2>\n<p>Not unlike their Anglophone counterparts, handshakes are expected in a French business environment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>Nous nous <strong>serrons la main<\/strong> pour sceller l&#8217;accord commercial conclu entre nos deux entreprises.<\/em> (We <strong>shake hands<\/strong> to seal the business deal between our two companies.)<\/p>\n<h2>7. <em>La Bise<\/em> (Kisses on the Cheek)<\/h2>\n<p>If you work in a smaller or more informal business, you&#8217;ll find that coworkers may greet each other with <em>la bise<\/em> in the morning if they like each other\u2014or pretend to. The number of kisses varies according to region, but in Paris it&#8217;s often two kisses beginning on the left.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>En France, on pratique souvent <strong>la bise<\/strong> pour se saluer dans un contexte professionnel.<\/em> (In France, <strong>cheek kissing<\/strong> is often practiced as a professional greeting.)<\/p>\n<h2>8.<em> Vous <\/em>(You \u2014 Formal)<\/h2>\n<p>In practice, both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/french\/tu-vs-vous\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>tu <\/em>and <em>vous <\/em><\/a>are acceptable to use in a business environment. However, you need to listen carefully to your colleagues to determine the correct level of formality for each situation and each particular business&#8217;s culture.<\/p>\n<p>To be safe, use <em>vous<\/em> as it&#8217;s considered more polite. It&#8217;s almost always used in meetings with those outside of your own company, and with your boss. Some bosses may prefer the more relaxed <em>tu<\/em>, though. It&#8217;s used much more than its English counterpart, and can come in handy when you forget someone&#8217;s name.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em><strong>Monsieur<\/strong>, nous avons bien re\u00e7u votre demande et nous y donnerons suite dans les plus brefs d\u00e9lais.<\/em> (<strong>Sir<\/strong>, we have received your request and will respond to it as soon as possible.)<\/p>\n<h2>11.<em> Madame <\/em>(Ma&#8217;am\/Madam)<\/h2>\n<p>\u00a0Similarly, <em>madame <\/em>is a polite way to address a woman, particularly one that you don&#8217;t know very well.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em><strong>Madame<\/strong>, nous sommes honor\u00e9s de vous pr\u00e9senter nos meilleurs v\u0153ux pour le succ\u00e8s de votre entreprise.<\/em> (<strong>Madam<\/strong>, we are honored to extend our best wishes for the success of your business.)<\/p>\n<h2>12. <em>Les Coll\u00e8gues<\/em> (Coworkers)<\/h2>\n<p>Foreigners working in France are often surprised by the limited amount of socializing that goes on between <em>les coll\u00e8gues<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em><strong>Les coll\u00e8gues<\/strong> travaillent ensemble pour atteindre les objectifs de l&#8217;entreprise.<\/em> (<strong>Colleagues<\/strong> work together to achieve the company&#8217;s goals.)<\/p>\n<h2>13.<em> Pote de travail<\/em> (Work Buddy)<\/h2>\n<p>Once your <em>les coll\u00e8gues<\/em> get comfy with you, though, it is possible to transition to <em>pote de travail<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>Mon <strong>pote de travail<\/strong> et moi collaborons \u00e9troitement sur ce projet depuis plusieurs mois.<\/em> (My <strong>work buddy<\/strong> and I have been closely collaborating on this project for several months.)<\/p>\n<h2>14. <em>Team Buildings<\/em> (Team Building Events)<\/h2>\n<p><em>Team buildings <\/em>are becoming increasingly common in France to foster social connections between workers. (Ignore what dictionaries might tell you, as the shortened anglicism <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lenouveleconomiste.fr\/lesdossiers\/team-building-que-ma-joie-demeure-26868\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">is usually used<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>Les <strong>team buildings<\/strong> sont essentiels pour renforcer la coh\u00e9sion au sein de l&#8217;\u00e9quipe.<\/em> (<strong>Team buildings<\/strong> are essential for strengthening team cohesion.)<\/p>\n<h2>15<em>. <\/em><em>Les formations de travail<\/em> (Training Sessions)<\/h2>\n<p>Companies are required to provide training sessions for their employees. However, employees often don&#8217;t take these too seriously, and instead use them as opportunities to socialize.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>Nous organisons des <strong>formations de travail<\/strong> r\u00e9guli\u00e8res pour am\u00e9liorer les comp\u00e9tences de nos employ\u00e9s.<\/em> (We organize regular <strong>work trainings<\/strong> to enhance the skills of our employees.)<\/p>\n<h2>16. <em>Une Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 par Actions<\/em> (Joint Stock Company)<\/h2>\n<p>Earlier, we mentioned three French terms for &#8220;company&#8221; in French. Now, we&#8217;re going to get into the specific types of companies.<\/p>\n<p>First up is <em>une soci\u00e9t\u00e9 par actions<\/em>, which simply means that the stocks or shares (representations of ownership) within a company can be purchased or sold by individuals or entities known as &#8220;stockholders&#8221; or &#8220;shareholders.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>La cr\u00e9ation d&#8217;<strong>une soci\u00e9t\u00e9 par actions<\/strong> offre plusieurs avantages en termes de responsabilit\u00e9 financi\u00e8re.<\/em> (The establishment of <strong>a joint-stock company<\/strong> offers several advantages in terms of financial liability.)<\/p>\n<h2>17.<em> Une Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e0 Responsabilit\u00e9 Limit\u00e9e <\/em>(Limited Liability Company)<\/h2>\n<p>When a company has &#8220;LLC&#8221; in its name, you&#8217;ll know that it&#8217;s this. As its name suggests, it&#8217;s a company structured in such a way that the individual company owners shoulder as little of the company&#8217;s debts as possible. Some of the most famous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidermonkey.com\/blog\/5-most-valuable-french-companies-in-the-world-1076187\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">French multinational companies<\/a> are Christian Dior, Herm\u00e8s, L\u2019Or\u00e9al and Louis Vuitton.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em><strong>Une multinationale<\/strong> op\u00e8re dans plusieurs pays et est soumise \u00e0 des r\u00e9glementations internationales.<\/em> (<strong>A multinational<\/strong> operates in multiple countries and is subject to international regulations.)<\/p>\n<h2>19. <em>Une Maison-M\u00e8re<\/em> (Parent Company)<\/h2>\n<p>A parent company is one that has a significant controlling interest (typically <a href=\"https:\/\/corporatefinanceinstitute.com\/resources\/accounting\/parent-company\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">over 50%<\/a>) over another company or group of companies known as subsidiaries.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em><strong>Une maison-m\u00e8re<\/strong> supervise les op\u00e9rations de ses filiales et d\u00e9tient souvent une participation majoritaire dans celles-ci.<\/em> (<strong>A parent company<\/strong> oversees the operations of its subsidiaries and often holds a majority stake in them.)<\/p>\n<h2>20. <em>Une association \u00e0 but Non Lucratif<\/em> (Nonprofit Organization)<\/h2>\n<p>When you say that a company is &#8220;nonprofit,&#8221; it doesn&#8217;t necessarily mean that the company doesn&#8217;t have any money flowing in or out of it. Rather, it means that all of its &#8220;profits&#8221; are put into projects that aim to benefit society in some way (at least, in theory).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em><strong>Une association \u00e0 but non lucratif<\/strong> se consacre \u00e0 des activit\u00e9s d&#8217;int\u00e9r\u00eat g\u00e9n\u00e9ral sans rechercher de b\u00e9n\u00e9fices financiers.<\/em> (<strong>A non-profit organization<\/strong> is dedicated to activities of general interest without seeking financial profits.)<\/p>\n<h2>21. <i>Petite et Moyenne Entreprise <\/i>(Small and Midsize Enterprise)<\/h2>\n<p>Just as Anglophones have SMEs, France has PMEs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>Les <strong>petites et moyennes entreprises<\/strong> jouent un r\u00f4le crucial dans l&#8217;\u00e9conomie locale.<\/em> (<strong>Small and medium-sized enterprises<\/strong> play a crucial role in the local economy.)<\/p>\n<h2>22.<strong><em> Mettre \u00e0 Jour <\/em><\/strong>(Update)<\/h2>\n<p>One of the more frequent things you&#8217;ll be asked for in a French office is to <em>mettre \u00e0 jour<\/em> someone about something. The noun form is <em><strong>une mise \u00e0 jour<\/strong><\/em> (an update).<\/p>\n<p>For example:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>Ils <strong>mettent \u00e0 jour<\/strong> ces strat\u00e9gies\u00a0au moins tous les trois ans.<\/em> (They <strong>update<\/strong> these strategies at least every three years.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>Lorsque vous recevez <strong>une<\/strong> <strong>mise \u00e0 jour<\/strong> &#8230;<\/em> (When you receive <strong>an<\/strong> <strong>update<\/strong> &#8230;)<\/p>\n<h2>23.<em><strong> Actualisation <\/strong><\/em>(Update of Data)<\/h2>\n<p>When you&#8217;re discussing numbers such as\u00a0items or prices, you might use\u00a0<em>actualisation<\/em>, like in\u00a0<em>une <strong>actualisation<\/strong> des pr\u00e9visions\u00a0de tr\u00e9sorerie<\/em> (an update of cash flow forecasts).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>L&#8217;actualisation des donn\u00e9es est essentielle pour maintenir la pr\u00e9cision de nos informations financi\u00e8res.<\/em> (The <strong>update<\/strong> of data is essential to maintain the accuracy of our financial information.)<\/p>\n<h2>24. <em>Une mise au point<\/em> (Lit. \u201cBringing Into Focus\u201d)<\/h2>\n<p>This one is used for meetings that update, define or further refine projects.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>Nous tiendrons <strong>une mise au point<\/strong> demain matin pour actualiser et affiner les d\u00e9tails du projet en cours.<\/em> (We will have <strong>a meeting [on]<\/strong> the details of the ongoing project tomorrow morning.)<\/p>\n<h2>25.<em> <strong>Livrer<\/strong> <\/em>(Turn In)<\/h2>\n<p>When you&#8217;re asked to <em>livrer <\/em>a report, make sure you have it ready\u2014or, at least, a good reason why it&#8217;s not ready yet!<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>Je dois <strong>livrer<\/strong> le rapport final d&#8217;ici la fin de la journ\u00e9e.<\/em> (I have to <strong>turn in<\/strong> the final report by the end of the day.)<\/p>\n<h2>26.<em><strong> Un Bilan \/\u00a0Une Annonce <\/strong><\/em>(Lit. &#8220;A Review&#8221; \/ &#8220;An Announcement&#8221;)<\/h2>\n<p>Both<em> un bilan <\/em>and <em>une annonce <\/em>refer to a published report, typically given to the media.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>Nous avons une <strong>annonce<\/strong> importante \u00e0 partager lors de la r\u00e9union de l&#8217;\u00e9quipe demain.<\/em> (We have an important <strong>announcement<\/strong> to share at the team meeting tomorrow.)<\/p>\n<h2>27. <em>Un rapport de situation<\/em> (Status Update)<\/h2>\n<p>Now and then, your boss may ask you about <em>un rapport de situation <\/em>regarding the project you&#8217;re working on.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>Le directeur financier pr\u00e9sentera un <strong>rapport de situation<\/strong> lors de la r\u00e9union du conseil d&#8217;administration.<\/em> (The CFO will present a <strong>status update<\/strong> at the board meeting.)<\/p>\n<h2>28. <em>Une \u00c9valuation<\/em> (An Evaluation)<\/h2>\n<p>This refers to an evaluation, such as that of an employee.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>Une <strong>\u00e9valuation<\/strong> des performances de l&#8217;\u00e9quipe sera r\u00e9alis\u00e9e \u00e0 la fin du trimestre.<\/em> (A performance<strong> evaluation<\/strong> of the team will be conducted at the end of the quarter.)<\/p>\n<h2>29. <em>Un Compte-rendu<\/em> (Minutes of a Meeting)<\/h2>\n<p>This can also refer to a general write-up of a situation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>Le responsable des ventes doit fournir un <strong>compte-rendu<\/strong> d\u00e9taill\u00e9 des activit\u00e9s du mois dernier.<\/em> (The sales manager must provide a detailed <strong>report<\/strong> on last month&#8217;s activities.)<\/p>\n<h2>30. <em>Un Rapport Annuel<\/em> (Annual Report)<\/h2>\n<p><em>Un rapport annuel<\/em> refers to the financial statements that companies need to file every year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>Le <strong>rapport annuel<\/strong> sera distribu\u00e9 aux actionnaires lors de l&#8217;assembl\u00e9e g\u00e9n\u00e9rale.<\/em> (The <strong>annual report<\/strong> will be distributed to shareholders at the general meeting.)<\/p>\n<p>By the way, here&#8217;s a good <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blog-assistantes.fr\/2012\/09\/25\/4-etapes-pour-reussir-la-redaction-dun-rapport\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general guide on writing various types of business reports<\/a> in French. Note that you&#8217;ll use formal\u2014and sometimes slightly more florid language\u2014than you might in the ultra-practical world of Anglophone business. When in doubt, check how other reports at your company are generally structured.<\/p>\n<h2>31.<em> Le Paiement <\/em>(Payment)<\/h2>\n<p>When you&#8217;re talking about money being handed out, you can&#8217;t go wrong with the general term <em>le paiement<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>Le <strong>paiement<\/strong> des factures doit \u00eatre effectu\u00e9 avant la fin du mois pour \u00e9viter des frais de retard.<\/em> (The <strong>payment<\/strong> of invoices must be made by the end of the month to avoid late fees.)<\/p>\n<h2>32.<em> Le Salaire<\/em> (Salary)<\/h2>\n<p>If you want to talk about salaries specifically, use <em>le salaire.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>Les employ\u00e9s recevront leur <strong>salaire<\/strong> \u00e0 la fin de la semaine.<\/em> (Employees will receive their <strong>salary<\/strong> at the end of the week.)<\/p>\n<h2>33.<em><strong> Les Honoraires <\/strong><\/em><strong>(Fees)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The word <em>honoraires <\/em>almost looks like the English word &#8220;honorary,&#8221; doesn&#8217;t it? (You&#8217;d definitely not want to translate it that way, though.)
