One note on summer drinks in France: It’s pretty uncommon to be served a drink with ice in France<\/strong> unless you’ve specifically requested it. And even then, sometimes the restaurant won’t have it.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But it doesn’t hurt to ask, so when the temperature rises and you really want that icy drink, you can use this phrase:<\/p>\n

Les grandes vacances<\/em> <\/strong>\u2014 <\/b>Summer vacation<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Traditionally in the summer, many people in France will take up to three weeks<\/strong> of their mandatory five paid vacation weeks per year, meaning the rest of life in the country slows to a crawl.<\/p>\n

Pendant les grandes vacances<\/strong>, nous aimons partir en famille \u00e0 la plage.<\/em> (During the summer vacation, we like to go to the beach as a family.)<\/p>\n

Passer \u00e0 l\u2019heure d\u2019\u00e9t\u00e9<\/em> \u2014 To switch to d<\/b>aylight saving time\u00a0<\/h3>\n

Instead of changing to daylight-saving time, the French have a much more poetic saying for putting the clocks forward: \u201cpasser \u00e0 l\u2019heure d\u2019\u00e9t\u00e9,\u201d <\/em>which literally translates to “passing to summertime.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

Likewise, in the fall<\/a>, the country passes back to winter time (passer \u00e0 l\u2019heure d\u2019hiver<\/em>).<\/p>\n

La f\u00eate nationale<\/em> \u2014 <\/strong>The national holiday (Bastille Day)<\/h3>\n

Although English-speaking countries refer to France\u2019s national holiday on July 14 as Bastille Day, it’s known in France rather unoriginally as \u201cthe national holiday\u201d (la f\u00eate nationale<\/em>).<\/p>\n

Le 14 juillet est un jour f\u00e9ri\u00e9 en France pour c\u00e9l\u00e9brer la f\u00eate nationale<\/strong>.<\/em> (July 14th is a public holiday in France to celebrate Bastille Day.)<\/p>\n

Faire le pont<\/em> <\/strong>\u2014 <\/b>Make the bridge (to have a four-day weekend)<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Spring and summer in France are chock-full of national holidays. When these holidays fall on Thursdays or Tuesdays<\/strong>, the French will say that they\u2019re \u201cmaking the bridge\u201d (faire le pont)<\/em> between the holiday and the weekend by taking the extra day off to make a four-day weekend.\u00a0<\/p>\n

La fermeture annuelle<\/em> \u2014 <\/b>Annual closing<\/h3>\n

As people leave the city for their annual summer vacation, many shops in France close their doors for the month. Don\u2019t be surprised to see storefronts shuttered with signs reading:<\/p>\n

Fermeture annuelle <\/strong>: r\u00e9ouverture en septembre<\/em>\u00a0(Annual closing: reopening in September).<\/p>\n

Se mettre au vert<\/em> <\/strong>\u2014 <\/b>T<\/strong>o get out into the countryside<\/h3>\n

This expression, which literally means \u201cto put oneself in the green,\u201d<\/strong> is used in the summer months when French people leave the city for the tranquility and natural beauty of the countryside.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Just be aware: the expression can also mean that you’re escaping to the countryside to lay low because the police are after you!<\/p>\n

It’s the perpetual summer dilemma! Work has ceased, the sun is shining and the humidity is rising. Are you going to cool off at the ocean or get some fresh air and great views in the mountains?\u00a0<\/p>\n

This is an expression that aptly describes a summer in France. The phrase literally translates to “It makes beautiful,” but the phrase is a set French expression that’s used to describe the weather. <\/i><\/p>\n

On a more familiar level, the expression can be likened to “what a beautiful day” or “it’s beautiful out.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

July vacation goers (juilletistes)<\/em> <\/strong>are thus often seen as somewhat rebellious, and see August vacation goes (ao\u00fbtien)<\/em> <\/strong>as suckers that go on vacation at the same time as everyone else when prices are the highest.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Juilletistes<\/em>\u00a0tend to be younger and more active, favoring adventurous vacations over the beach, while\u00a0ao\u00fbtiens<\/em> include many older holiday goers and blue-collar workers.<\/p>\n

Sweating is an inevitable part of summer anywhere that sees temperatures rise exponentially. The most common expression in French is \u201cto sweat like an oxen\u201d (transpirer comme un b\u0153uf)<\/em> or, for the ladies, \u201cto sweat like a cow\u201d (une vache)<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Il faisait tellement chaud pendant la randonn\u00e9e que nous avons transpir\u00e9 comme des b\u0153ufs<\/strong>.<\/em> (It was so hot during the hike that we sweat like oxen.)<\/p>\n

When the classic il fait chaud<\/em> (it\u2019s hot) just isn\u2019t enough to describe the blistering heat, you can impress your French friends by using this dramatic expression. It translates loosely to “It’s scorching hot,” “It’s hot as hell” or even “It’s so hot I might die!”\u00a0<\/p>\n

Because so many French people take their vacation around the same time, the massive exodus from major cities (known as le grand d\u00e9part<\/em>) can put major strains on the country\u2019s highway system.<\/p>\n

In 1975, the National Center for Roadway Information unveiled Bison Fut\u00e9<\/em><\/a>, a cartoon character that gives color-coded traffic alerts<\/strong>\u00a0and looks oddly (and problematically) like a Native American<\/a>.<\/p>\n

This system is still used today (although the logo was recently updated). So when bison fut\u00e9<\/em>\u00a0sees orange, you should plan ahead; red, better plan for several extra hours; and black, best to find another mode of transportation!<\/p>\n

If your vacation plans in France could include a summer romance, you might want to brush up on your romantic French vocabulary<\/a>.<\/p>\n

All good things must eventually come to an end, including summer vacation. Bonne rentr\u00e9e<\/em> can mean many things depending on who you say it to.\u00a0<\/p>\n

For children or teachers it translates generally as \u201cwelcome back to class,\u201d while for those returning to jobs, it means \u201cwishing you a successful return to work.\u201d<\/p>\n
