You can find a\u00a0language exchange partner on\u00a0italki,<b>\u00a0<\/b>which is an\u00a0<strong>online community of language learners.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s got a really nice interface and offers social networking features. It includes quizzes to help you track your progress, conjugation charts for verbs, detailed grammar info and audio clips.<\/p>\n<p>The paid version of the program includes plenty more features and the app is constantly getting updated with new functionality.<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"http:\/\/Ankiweb.net\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Anki<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/Ankiweb.net\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-3789\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/site\/\/6\/33-must-have-japanese-learning-tools-to-fill-your-toolbox5.png\" alt=\"Anki\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/h3>\n<p>Anki is an <strong>extremely popular flashcard tool <\/strong>for kanji practice. Though I\u2019ve run into the occasional bug trying to get it to work on my smartphone, it\u2019s a fantastic app when you do get it up and running.<\/p>\n<p>This open-source program has a ton\u00a0of flashcard sets created by Japanese aficionados from around the world. The app is much prettier than <a href=\"http:\/\/nihongo.monash.edu\/cgi-bin\/wwwjdic?1C\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">the website<\/a>, but both <strong>provide lots of information.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Most of the apps on our list are available for Android, but there are plenty of options for iPhone users, as well.<\/p>\n<h2>Browser Plugins<\/h2>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/chrome.google.com\/webstore\/detail\/rikaikun\/jipdnfibhldikgcjhfnomkfpcebammhp?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rikaikun<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>This is an invaluable <strong>Chrome <\/strong>plugin that looks up Japanese kanji and vocabulary when you hover over them with the mouse. It\u2019s a simple dictionary, but boy is it useful!<\/p>\n<p>It not only defines kanji, it also has a huge bank of Japanese vocabulary.<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/app\/safarikai\/id1437951175?ls=1&amp;mt=12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Safarikai<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>And if you use <strong>Safari,<\/strong> look for this one.<\/p>\n<h3>Japanese Input for Windows\/Mac<\/h3>\n<p>Every Japanese student will need to type in Japanese at some point or other. Luckily, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/blog\/japanese\/japanese-typing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">typing in Japanese<\/a> is free and easy to set up.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.coscom.co.jp\/learnjapanese801\/install_ime.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>There are instructions online<\/strong><\/a> for setting up your keyboard to type in Japanese. All you need to do is open up your control panel, make a couple tweaks and\u00a0you\u2019re all set. They include vocabulary, sounds, meanings and much more.<\/p>\n<p>Due to online competition, their price has been reduced and is much more reasonable now\u2026when I bought all three sets they cost me around $200.<\/p>\n<p>If you have the time, you can also <strong>make your own flashcards<\/strong> by hand! All you need is some index cards and a pen or marker.<\/p>\n<h3>Electronic Dictionary<\/h3>\n<p>How hardcore are you?<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019ve got the money to spare, grab an electronic dictionary.<\/p>\n<p>Mine\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.denshi-jisho.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">a\u00a0Seiko brand<\/a><strong>,<\/strong> but it\u2019s still the best offline dictionary I\u2019ve ever found. Here\u2019s what to look for in a hand-held electronic dictionary: a Japanese-English dictionary, an English-Japanese dictionary, a Japanese-Japanese dictionary and a kanji dictionary.<\/p>\n<p>Mine also includes an English-English dictionary, idioms, a calculator and a few other functions.<\/p>\n<p>Two other popular brands are <b>Casio and Sharp<\/b>.<\/p>\n<h3>Notebooks, Japanese Pens and Pencils<\/h3>\n<p>A notebook\u2019s a notebook, right?<\/p>\n<p>Well, yes and no.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The right notebook can make your practice even more enjoyable.<\/strong> I personally recommend the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Moleskine-Classic-Notebook-Sketching-Journaling\/dp\/8883701135?tag=fluentu-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">gridded moleskines<\/a> if you\u2019re just starting out with kanji practice. You can use the vertical lines to help you keep all your kanji organized and properly sized.<\/p>\n<p>Of course you can choose any notebook that you like using.<\/p>\n<p>As for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tokyopenshop.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Japanese writing instruments<\/a>, they can be a great way to motivate yourself to study and will help make studying with pen and paper more engaging.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Hopefully, you\u2019ve found this list helpful.
