They\u2019re an essential part of conveying your thoughts and ideas, but for language learners the task can be a bit daunting. Usually, we\u2019re introduced to elementary adjectives like \u201cdark\u201d or \u201cwide\u201d\u2014which are definitely essential, but won\u2019t help you describe all your feels when your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentu.com\/japanese\/blog\/learn-japanese-with-manga\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">favorite <em>manga<\/em><\/a><em>\u00a0<\/em>spirals into a sudden plot twist.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Learn adjectives that are relevant to your life.<\/strong> Think of situations that will occur when you\u2019re in Japan or speaking Japanese.\u00a0Will you be asking for directions? Since I like to talk about gossip and fashion, my most frequent adjectives would probably be:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><strong>\u307e\u305a\u3044<\/strong> \u2014 awkward, untimely, unpleasant<br \/>\n<strong>\u30ad\u30e2\u3044<\/strong> (\u304d\u3082\u3044) \u2014 gross, disgusting<br \/>\n<strong>\u7c8b<\/strong> (\u3044\u304d) \u2014 stylish, chic<\/p>\n<h2>How to Conjugate \u3044-Adjectives<\/h2>\n<p>\u3044-Adjectives (also called \u201cTrue Adjectives\u201d or \u201cPure Adjectives\u201d) are adjectives that end in the <em>kana<\/em> character \u3044.<\/p>\n<p>Note that not every adjective that ends in \u3044\u00a0is an \u3044-adjective, but we\u2019ll learn more about that in just a bit. See the following examples:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><strong>\u9762\u767d\u3044<\/strong> (\u304a\u3082\u3057\u308d\u3044) \u2014 interesting<br \/>\n<strong>\u65b0\u3057\u3044<\/strong> (\u3042\u305f\u3089\u3057\u3044) \u2014 new<br \/>\n<strong>\u697d\u3057\u3044<\/strong> (\u305f\u306e\u3057\u3044) \u2014 fun<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Most \u306a-adjectives consist of only <em>kanji<\/em> <\/strong>characters or end in a <em>kana<\/em> character that isn&#8217;t \u3044. See the following examples:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><strong>\u4fbf\u5229<\/strong> (\u3079\u3093\u308a) \u2014 convenient<br \/>\n<strong>\u9759\u304b<\/strong> (\u3057\u305a\u304b) \u2014 quiet<br \/>\n<strong>\u6709\u540d<\/strong> (\u3086\u3046\u3081\u3044) \u2014 famous<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Look at the conjugation. <\/strong>The previous rules work for most adjectives, but not all of them. When in doubt, look at the adjective\u2019s conjugation. As you continue to study Japanese, you\u2019ll hear \u306a follow \u306a-adjectives and you&#8217;ll use it automatically. If you watch dramas, you may develop the habit of looking off into the sunset and whispering to yourself, &#8220;\u304d\u308c\u3044\u306a\u2026&#8221; (&#8220;<em>beautiful<\/em>\u2026&#8221;).<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>\u3044-adjectives can be changed to \u306a-adjectives.<\/strong> This is done when the last \u3044 is dropped from the \u3044-adjective and replaced with \u306a. This is only done when the adjective is placed right before the noun it describes. This is done with common \u3044-adjectives such as\u00a0<strong>\u5927\u304d\u3044<\/strong> (\u304a\u304a\u304d\u3044 \u2014 big) and<em>\u00a0<\/em><strong>\u5c0f\u3055\u3044<\/strong> (\u3061\u3044\u3055\u3044 \u2014 small).
