What do we want?
To learn Spanish!
When do we want it?
How do we want to do it?
I am pretty sure you have heard about the “what do we want” meme. It is almost everywhere!
What you may not have heard about is the fact that there are some amazing Spanish online courses out there that can help you to improve your language skills right away, without even having to get out of your house.
Let’s take a look at how they can help you learn Spanish and where you can find them!
Why Study with Online Spanish Courses?
Online Spanish courses—and other online language courses, for that matter—are a trend at the moment.
Experience and history have taught us that not every trend is a good one, but when it comes to learning a new language on the internet, the advantages are too numerous to dismiss.
Depending on the type of language student you are, your needs will vary. You might absolutely need to be by yourself in order to be able to memorize anything, you may prefer to attend a group course or you might even need a private tutor.
The good thing about online language courses is that they offer solutions to almost every type of student, so virtually (pun super intended) all of us can benefit from them.
But regardless of the kind of student you are, there are some advantages to online courses that can be applied to everyone. Here are a few:
- You save time. You do not need to go anywhere in order to attend your course. You just sit back, relax and learn from the comfort of your own house.
- You get to choose what you want to learn. The amount and variety of courses available are so huge that it would be close to impossible to fail to find something you would like.
There are free courses, cheap courses, expensive courses, conversation courses, grammar courses, listening courses, courses with a tutor on Skype, courses offered by universities, etc.!
- You (almost always) get instant feedback. This really depends on the kind of course you are choosing, but online resources are commonly designed to give you instant feedback and let you know your progress right away.
- You can learn almost anywhere. And I am not only talking about the physical place where you can learn, which can be any place on Earth as long as you have an internet connection. I am talking about all the different ways in which you can access your course: from your phone, from your laptop or computer, from your tablet…
- You teach yourself how to be responsible. If you are trying to become a more responsible person, an online course is a perfect challenge for you. You will have to push yourself to follow the deadlines and do your homework.
If you are learning by yourself, you can set your own deadlines and make yourself keep them. This will help you to become an organized and responsible person!
- You can save money. Your course may or may not be for free, but you will certainly save money on gas, public transportation tickets, courses where you share the room with 15 other students where you learn close to nothing, etc.
There are certainly many more reasons why choosing an online Spanish course can be one of the greatest ideas you have come up with. What is your reason for wanting to study with an online course?
Which Spanish Online Course Should I Choose?
It comes down to one simple answer: It all depends on your personal needs!
Perhaps you need to learn business or medical Spanish, maybe you just want to get to know the basics or you may want to practice your speaking skills.
Always focus on what you need and read the description of the course, so that you are sure it meets your criteria. There are too many courses out there to accept the first one that offers us a big discount. If it is not a good fit, say “thank you, next!” and keep on looking until you find the one that completely works for you and your circumstances.
Do Online Spanish Courses Work?
It all depends on the course, but broadly speaking, yes, they do work.
I have been able to learn three languages with online language courses and other kinds of free online resources, and I am always hunting for the next great course that can help me to develop any of my skills or make me improve any of the languages I speak.
In case you are still lost and do not know where to head to in order to find your course, I have made a list of great online Spanish language courses among which you can choose the ones that meet your needs.
I hope this list inspires you to keep on learning!
15 Spanish Online Courses to Add Structure to Your Studies
Learning languages online is getting more and more trendy, and with the majority of us having close to zero free time, online learning has become a go-to tool worth giving a try.
The following list includes 15 resources where you can find amazing online Spanish courses. I have divided it into three sections: one with resources that include multiple courses each, one with individual (mostly) online courses and one with online courses that employ a teacher or tutor.
Find your perfect course in 3, 2, 1…
Multiple Courses on One Site
There are many sites that list different courses and link to other pages where courses are offered. Among them, I find these five the most useful:
If you search for Spanish courses on Udemy, you get a whopping 413 results back.
There is no excuse now not to learn Spanish online!
The course durations range from a few minutes to even 109 hours of content, so I am sure you will find at least one that makes you happy.
As for the types of courses, you have the typical beginner/intermediate/advanced ones, conversational courses, courses that teach you conjugation, Spanish immersion, language structure, intensive listening courses, common verbs… and the list goes on and on.
Just search for “Spanish” followed by the keyword you are interested in (vocabulary, grammar, verbs…) and start learning like the pros with Udemy.
If you have clicked on the link before reading the description, you already know Alison is not the biggest and most amazing site in the world when it comes to learning Spanish. Still, the three available courses are really worth a try because they are free!
The first one is a course on basic Spanish vocabulary that covers topics like getting directions, colors, descriptions, food, feeling unwell, etc. The second one is also a basic Spanish course that will teach you greetings and farewells, the numbers, the days and the dates, among other things.
However, my favorite is the third course: an internet course completely in Spanish aimed for native speakers of the language. This one is perfect for advanced students who want to gather a little bit of IT vocabulary.
The Open University
The Open University has been helping students from all around the world get their degrees online for over 50 years already.
Its language BAs, Diplomas, Certificates, MAs, Undergraduate modules and Postgraduate modules all include Spanish in one way or another, giving you the opportunity to enroll in a beginner or advanced Spanish course, work toward a Master’s Degree in Spanish or even get a BA in both English and Spanish, among other great stuff.
There is so much info about all these courses that it would take me a thousand years to mention everything, so I guess the best way of illustrating how awesome The Open University is will be sending you to their Spanish BA webpage so you can have a look for yourself.
But there’s more! Apart from all the amazing courses you can take here, they offer a whole list of resources where you can gorge on the Spanish language while you think over your next move. I personally love The Open University!
FSI Language Courses
The Foreign Service Institute has been teaching languages to US diplomats for over 70 years.
Among the numerous language courses they offer, there are six wonderful Spanish courses you can have for a total of zero dollars. Yes, they are free!
The six courses offered are the Spanish Programmatic Course (to be followed with audio, also available for free), the Spanish Basic Course (which includes 50 units in four huge volumes), the Spanish Fast Course (with a meager 588 pages and no audio) and then the three Spanish Headstart Courses, one for Latin American Spanish, one for Puerto Rican Spanish and one for Spanish from Spain.
All in all, if you were to take all six courses, you would probably need two lifetimes to cover all the material, even though FSI includes Spanish in the Category I list of languages (meaning that Spanish is among the easiest language for English speakers to learn), estimating it would take 24 to 30 weeks (600-750 class hours) to reach Professional Working Proficiency (ILR Level 3).
The downside? Well… bear in mind that some of these courses may be around 40-50 years old, and so are their audios. Grammar rules and vocabulary are not up-to-date, and you may cry over the poor quality of the audio. But if you ignore this, FSI language courses are among the best the internet can offer for free (I am currently learning Hungarian with their Hungarian course).
When you search for the word “Spanish” on Class Central, you get 95 results, 72 of which are courses with certificates.
Class Central gathers information and courses from websites such as the Universitat Politècnica de València, Coursera, edX or Canvas Network, among others.
The site gives you an overview of each course, the cost, the pace, the language of instruction, the duration of the course, etc. It also includes reviews and the number of students interested in the course.
You can opt for a paid version of most of the courses, which will allow you to get a certificate for around $40, usually. Additionally, each course page includes a Help Center and a list of related courses.
If you just want to have a quick look at the most popular courses in one single page, this is the place you should go.
Some websites and apps offer only one course, but this course tends to be very complete and always worth its price. Have a look at five of the best ones:
iversity offers the course Spanish for Beginners, from the Universidad a Distancia de Madrid (UDIMA).
The course, which is completely free, is taught in English and Spanish and includes 20 chapters (divided into 23 videos). With Spanish for Beginners, you will be able to immerse yourself in the Spanish language from the very beginning thanks to the course’s portrayal of everyday situations and real-life language.
Get ready to learn Spanish vocabulary (greetings, nationalities, locations, adjectives, etc.), phrases and conversation (talking about hobbies, asking for directions, asking the time, ordering in a restaurant, talking about the weather, etc.), phonetics (pronunciation and sound), grammar (tenses, verbs, prepositions, etc.) and interrogative words (what?, why?, where? how?, etc.), among other things, in an engaging and fun way thanks to UDIMA.
Each of the videos has interactive subtitles you can just click on in order to learn the meaning of a word and even see other videos that use that word. Want to study a word later? Just add it to your vocabulary list for later review!
You get to choose what you want to watch and what you want to learn, and FluentU organizes it in the form of progressive lessons with multimedia flashcards and quizzes that adapt to your style and level of learning.
The immersive, entertaining content makes grammar and vocabulary much more memorable. Plus, you can go at your own pace and choose topics that interest you.
FluentU is available in your browser or as an iOS or Android app. Even better, you can try a free trial before committing, so you’ve got nothing to lose!
Although BBC Spanish is no longer being updated, it includes so many resources that it would be a crime not to include it in this list.
Apart from info on the Spanish language, recipes, news, TV and radio stations, phrases and even a test, BBC Spanish offers a free online course for beginners called “Mi Vida Loca” (My Crazy Life).
“Mi Vida Loca” is an interactive learning video drama set in Madrid that can be completed in around 12 weeks.
In this mystery series, you play a role and need to talk to different characters, solve mysteries, complete activities, etc. You can even print the transcripts and the grammar and vocabulary sections of each unit, and at the end of the course, you can take a test.
Get ready to be amazed!
PracticingSpanish.com: Medical Spanish
If you need a free, in-depth course on medical Spanish and everything related to it, PracticingSpanish.com will make you very, very happy.
It contains so much information that I would need a whole other post just devoted to this resource, so let me just pinpoint its most important features:
- Medical dialogues: You get access to a whole lot of dialogues that have audio and an English translation. Some of them even include notes and explanations! These are real dialogues that use lots of medical terminology, so get ready to learn a ton of new words.
- Medical videos: In case you need more, you can watch their short, fun videos and learn phrases, expressions and more vocabulary. Each video includes a transcript under it.
- Medical vocabulary: The “Physician, Nurse, EMT, Dentist” section includes a long list of topics where you can find a massive amount of vocabulary accompanied by long phrases with audio and an English translation!
There are many more sections, from Spanish anatomy to Spanish grammar and exercises, Spanish conversation and even medical DVDs! Everything on this page is related to medical Spanish. Try to spend some time discovering all it has to offer. You will not regret it.
Of Course Learning: Conversational Spanish Made Easy
Conversational Spanish Made Easy may not be the greatest course out there, but it is perfect for those of you who just want to learn the basics of the Spanish language before visiting a Spanish-speaking country.
This course will teach you conversational Spanish so that you can easily ask for directions, order food, book a room or travel by public transportation without having to break a sweat.
Thanks to the real conversations it includes, you will be able to learn the necessary vocabulary and expressions needed for travel while also practicing your speaking, listening and writing skills!
At the end of each module, you will have tests and assessments to see how you are doing, and you can even contact a tutor if you have any questions or want to know more about any topic.
Online Courses with a Teacher/Tutor
Sometimes, even if we want to learn online, we need that one-on-one guidance we get in private classes. The following five courses work just like that:
Cervantes Escuela Internacional
The Cervantes Escuela Internacional (Cervantes International School) is an accredited center of the Cervantes Institute where you can learn Spanish online with a certified tutor.
The school allows you to choose not only the teacher but also the level of the course (there are up to 16 levels!) and even the study plan. They can prepare you for one of the DELE exams and teach you Spanish for specific purposes.
You will have access to a 24/7 platform where you will find self-study lessons and be able to practice your speaking, reading and writing skills, and you will get private lessons with a teacher on Skype (from one to 15 every month, depending on the course you decide to buy).
All the courses give you a certificate after completion of each level.
Learn More Than Spanish
If you want to learn Colombian Spanish, then today is your lucky day, because Learn More Than Spanish is a Colombia-based Spanish school that has, apart from in situ courses, online ones.
The process is as easy as pie: You book your first lesson and you and your teacher will analyze your needs, your level of Spanish and your learning strategy. Once you receive your personalized course plan, and if you are happy with your teacher, you can enroll right away, which means you can buy a lesson package and start learning Spanish online.
If you want to change your plan or get a different tutor, just contact the school and they will take care of it, or talk to your assigned tutor and ask them to modify the plan.
Live Lingua offers standard and specialized courses, exam preparation and learning tools, but it is their one-on-one lessons that made me fall in love with them.
For starters, your first 60-minute class is free. You have dozens of tutors to pick from, and you can get to know virtually anything about them by just clicking on their picture and reading their bio and facts.
Once you have found the ideal teacher, you will have to buy a lesson package and start learning! The lessons take place on Skype, and they are personalized and tailored to meet your specific needs.
I personally love the fact that you can see the working hours and job experience of each teacher. I am sure you would rather spend your money on a good tutor than on someone who has never taught Spanish in their life.
BaseLang can be compared to an all-you-can-eat buffet, but it is an all-you-can-learn online platform.
The concept is both simple and new (at least for me): you pay a monthly fee ($149 at the time of this writing) to get unlimited Spanish lessons with a native speaker teacher. Unlimited lessons! Neat!
You only pay $1 during the first week, and if you are subscribed to the All Language Resources free newsletter (ALR is a place where you can get an unimaginable amount of language resources for free), you will get a $10 discount on the first month.
BaseLang is so sure about the quality of the service they are offering that they state that “if within your first 35 days you are not happy, we will give you a full refund and send you an additional $20 for wasting your time.” Sweet!
Preply is a place where everyone can be a Spanish teacher. On the one hand, this is great because you can find very good prices for classes with Spanish native speakers. On the other hand, it has many non-natives who are also trying to teach Spanish to students, and I do not think that is a good idea.
But forget about what I think. If you register and you happen to find a teacher who suits you and who you are comfortable with, just go ahead and learn! The most important and difficult step is the first one: finding the right person.
Prices for Spanish online classes vary from $1 to $40 per class. Find your tutor, book a trial lesson and start learning the language of your dreams.
And that is all for today.
There are literally millions of Spanish online courses on the internet. If you are just starting or do not know which courses are worth investing in, the task can be a little bit daunting.
This list of 15 sites should give you plenty of options to choose a course that totally meets your needs.
At the end of the day, it is you who has to decide what is best for you, but I really hope you find what you are looking for among the possibilities I have brought you today.
Stay curious, my friends and as always, happy learning!
If you liked this post, something tells me that you'll love FluentU, the best way to learn Spanish with real-world videos.
