fuji mountain

A: Hey, I heard you’re going on a trip soon! Where are you headed?

B: Yeah, I’m super excited! I’m going to Japan for two weeks.

A: That sounds amazing! What made you choose Japan?

B: Well, I’ve always been fascinated by Japanese culture, and I’ve heard so many great things about the country. Plus, I’ve been wanting to try authentic sushi for a long time.

A: That’s a great reason! Have you planned out your itinerary yet?

B: I have a rough idea, but I still need to finalize some details. I definitely want to explore Tokyo and visit some traditional temples in Kyoto.

A: Those are must-see places! Any specific activities or attractions you’re looking forward to?

B: I really want to visit the famous Tsukiji Fish Market in Tokyo and experience a traditional tea ceremony in Kyoto.

A: That all sounds incredible. Do you have any concerns or things you’re preparing for?

B: Well, I’ve been trying to learn a few basic Japanese phrases to help me get around. And I’ve been researching the local customs and etiquette to ensure I don’t unintentionally offend anyone.

A: That’s smart! It’s always good to be respectful of the local culture. Don’t forget to try some local street food too! It’s usually delicious.

B: Definitely! I’m already making a list of all the must-try dishes. I can’t wait to indulge in some ramen and sushi.

A: Well, it sounds like you’re going to have an amazing time. Safe travels and enjoy every moment of your trip!

B: Thank you so much! I’ll make sure to share all the highlights when I’m back.

Conversación 2

doctor crossing arms

A: Hey, I’ve been feeling really sick lately. I think I should go see a doctor.

B: Oh no, what’s been bothering you?

A: I’ve had a persistent headache and a sore throat for the past few days. I also feel quite fatigued.

B: That doesn’t sound good. I think it’s a good idea to see a doctor, just to be safe.

A: Yeah, you’re right. I’ve been trying home remedies, but nothing seems to be working.

B: It’s always better to get professional advice when it comes to health issues. They can diagnose and provide proper treatment.

A: I guess I’ve been putting it off because I don’t want to deal with the hassle of going to the doctor’s office.

B: I understand, but it’s important to prioritize your health. I can help you find a reputable doctor nearby if you want.

A: That would be really helpful. Can you recommend someone?

B: Sure! I’ve heard good things about Dr. Johnson. She’s in a clinic just a few blocks away from here.

A: Great, I’ll look her up. Thanks for the recommendation.

B: No problem. Let me know if you need any more help or if you want me to accompany you to the appointment.

A: I really appreciate that. I’ll keep you updated on what the doctor says.

Conversación 3

hiking adventure

A: Hey, Sarah! I was thinking, what do you say we plan something fun for this Saturday?

B:
That sounds great! I’m all up for it. Any ideas on what we could do?

A:
Well, how about going for a hike in the nearby nature reserve? The weather is supposed to be perfect.

B:
Oh, I love that idea! It’s been a while since I’ve been out in nature. What time should we meet?

A: How about meeting at 9:00 am? That way we can beat the crowd and have a good amount of time for the hike.

B: Sounds good to me. Should we bring any snacks or drinks with us?

A: Definitely! It would be a good idea to pack some water, energy bars, and maybe some sandwiches for a picnic afterward. And don’t forget to wear comfortable shoes and bring sunscreen.

B: Good point. I’ll look that up and let you know if there are any updates. This is going to be such a fun day!

A: I can’t wait! It’s going to be a great way to relax and enjoy the weekend. Let’s make sure to capture some photos too.

B: Absolutely! We’ll have plenty of Instagram-worthy shots. Okay, I’m in. See you on Saturday at 9:00 am!

A: See you then! Can’t wait for our hiking adventure.

Conversación 4

goalkeeper

A: Hey, did you catch the game last night?

B: Yeah, I did! What a thrilling match it was!

A: Absolutely! I couldn’t believe that last-minute goal.

B: I know, right? It completely turned the game around.

A: And the goalkeeper’s saves were incredible too. He really stepped up.

B: Definitely. He’s been in top form lately. It’s great to see him perform like that.

A: By the way, who do you think will win the championship this year?

B: It’s tough to say. There are so many strong teams this season. I’m rooting for my favorite, but anything can happen.

A: I agree. The competition is intense, and every team seems to have its strengths.

B: Absolutely. It’s going to be an exciting playoffs for sure.

A: I can’t wait to see how it all unfolds. Let’s get together for the next game and watch it live.

B: Sounds like a plan! I’ll bring some snacks. It’s always more fun to watch with friends.

Conversación 5

two people in an apocalypse

A: Hey, have you ever thought about what life would be like in a post-apocalyptic world?

B: Yeah, it’s a pretty scary thought. I mean, imagine everything we take for granted just disappearing.

A: Absolutely. No electricity, no internet, no modern conveniences. It would be a completely different way of life.

B: Yeah, we would have to rely on our survival skills. Hunting for food, finding shelter, and defending ourselves from threats.

A: And what about the lack of resources? With limited supplies, we’d have to learn to be resourceful and make do with what we have.

B: True. It might bring out the best and worst in people. Some might cooperate and form communities, while others might become more selfish and desperate.

A: It’s definitely a grim picture, but I guess it’s also an opportunity for humanity to rebuild and start anew.

B: Yeah, I can see that. We would have to come together, share knowledge, and work towards a common goal of rebuilding society.

A: And maybe, just maybe, we would learn from our past mistakes and create a more sustainable and resilient world.

B: That’s a hopeful thought. It’s fascinating to think about how different our lives would be and how we would adapt in such extreme circumstances.

A: Absolutely. It really puts things into perspective and makes us appreciate what we have now. Let’s hope we never have to experience anything like that in reality.

B: Agreed. Let’s cherish the present and hope for a brighter future.

Conversación 6

broken heart

A: Hey, how are you doing?

B: Hey, I’m okay. Just feeling a bit down lately.

A: What’s been bothering you?

B: It’s love, or rather, the lack of it. I’ve had a string of disappointments in that department.

A: I’m sorry to hear that. Want to talk about it?

B: Yeah, it would be nice to get it off my chest. I’ve been putting myself out there, going on dates, but it seems like I keep attracting the wrong people.

A: That can be really frustrating. Have you figured out why that’s been happening?

B: I’ve been reflecting on it, and I think I might be rushing into relationships without really getting to know the person first. I’ve been too focused on finding someone rather than finding the right someone.

A: That’s a common mistake. It’s important to take your time and get to know someone before jumping into something serious.

B: You’re right. I’ve also realized that I need to work on my own self-esteem and not settle for less than what I deserve.

A: Absolutely! You deserve someone who appreciates and respects you. Don’t settle for anything less than that.

B: Thank you for listening and offering your perspective. It’s nice to have someone to talk to about this.

A: Of course, anytime. Remember, love disappointments happen to everyone, but it doesn’t define your worth. Keep focusing on yourself, and the right person will come along when the time is right.

B: I appreciate your support. I’ll try to stay positive and patient.

Conversación 7

Watching series on TV

A: Hey, have you been watching any interesting TV series lately?

B: Absolutely! I’ve been hooked on this new show called Stranger Things. Have you seen it?

A: Oh, definitely! I love Stranger Things. The storyline is so captivating, and the ’80s setting adds a nostalgic touch.

B: I couldn’t agree more! The characters are fantastic, especially Eleven and Chief Hopper. Their performances are outstanding.

A: I completely agree. And the whole supernatural element mixed with coming-of-age themes really makes it unique.

B: Exactly! It’s like a perfect blend of mystery, sci-fi, and adventure. I can’t wait for the next season to come out.

A: Me too! I’m also really into Game of Thrones. The intricate plot and complex characters keep me on the edge of my seat.

B: Oh, Game of Thrones is epic! The battles, political intrigue, and unexpected twists make it so addictive. Who’s your favorite character?

A: It’s hard to choose, but I’d have to go with Tyrion Lannister. His wit and intelligence are just incredible.

B: I love Tyrion too! He always brings a sense of humor to the intense situations. But I also have a soft spot for Arya Stark and her journey.

A: Oh, Arya is amazing! Her transformation throughout the series is remarkable. The show definitely has some unforgettable moments.

B: Absolutely. It’s so much fun discussing our favorite TV shows. We should exchange recommendations for other series to watch.

A: Definitely! I’m always looking for new shows to dive into. Let’s make a list and compare notes.

B: Sounds like a plan! I can’t wait to hear your recommendations, and I’m excited to share mine as well.

A: Hey, have you ever thought about learning something new?

B: Yeah, definitely! I’ve been wanting to pick up a new skill or hobby lately. How about you?

A: Same here! I feel like I’ve been in a bit of a rut and it’s time to explore something different.

B: That’s a great mindset to have! Any specific ideas in mind?

A: Well, I’ve always been fascinated by photography. I think it would be cool to learn how to take professional-looking pictures.

B: That’s awesome! Photography can be a lot of fun. You could start by getting a basic camera and experimenting with different settings.

A: Yeah, I was thinking of investing in a decent camera and maybe taking a photography course to learn the fundamentals.

B: That’s a good plan. I’ve been considering learning to play the guitar. I’ve always loved music, and it would be great to be able to play my favorite songs.

A: That sounds amazing! You could start by finding a beginner’s guitar and maybe taking some online lessons or finding a local instructor.

B: That’s a good idea. I’ll definitely look into it. Maybe we can motivate each other and keep each other accountable in our learning journeys.

A: Absolutely! Having a learning buddy can make the process more enjoyable and help us stay committed. Let’s do it!

B: I’m in! Let’s explore our new interests and see where they take us. It’s never too late to learn something new, right?

A: Definitely! The world is full of possibilities. I can’t wait to see what we achieve.

Conversación 9

father and son

A: Hey, how’s it going?

B: Pretty good! How about you?

A: Not bad, thanks. Hey, did you see my sister at the party last night?

B: Yeah, I did! She was having a great time. She’s always the life of the party.

A: Haha, yeah, that’s true. She’s always been outgoing. Speaking of family, how’s your brother doing?

B: He’s doing well, thanks for asking. He just had a baby girl last month, so he’s been busy adjusting to fatherhood.

A: That’s amazing! Please send my congratulations to him. Does he have any other kids?

B: No, this is their first child. They’re over the moon with joy.

A: I can only imagine. Being a parent must be such a rewarding experience.

B: Definitely. It’s a lot of responsibility, but it brings so much happiness as well. By the way, how are your parents doing?

A: They’re good, thanks. They recently retired and have been enjoying their newfound free time. They’ve been traveling a lot and exploring new hobbies.

B: That sounds wonderful. It’s great to see them enjoying their well-deserved retirement.

A: Yeah, it’s been nice to see them relax and pursue their passions. Family is so important, isn’t it?

B: Absolutely. They’re always there for us, supporting and cheering us on. We’re lucky to have such a close-knit family.

A: Couldn’t agree more. Well, it was good catching up on you. Let’s grab a coffee sometime and continue this conversation.

B: Definitely! I’d love that. Take care, and let’s plan that coffee soon.

A: Sounds like a plan. Take care too, and see you soon!

Conversación 10

cute ghost

A: Hey, have you ever had any paranormal experiences?

B
: Oh, definitely! I had this one incident a few years ago. I was home alone, and I heard footsteps upstairs even though I knew no one else was there.

A
: That sounds creepy! What did you do?

B
: I was terrified, but I mustered up the courage to investigate. As I went upstairs, the footsteps suddenly stopped, and there was no one in any of the rooms.

A
: That’s so strange! Did anything else happen?

B
: Yes, actually. On another occasion, I woke up in the middle of the night and saw a shadowy figure standing at the foot of my bed. It disappeared when I turned on the lights.

A
: Wow, that would give me chills! Have you ever tried to find an explanation for these experiences?

B
: I did some research and found out that my house has a history of paranormal activity. Apparently, there have been reports of strange occurrences by previous owners as well.

A
: That’s fascinating, but also kind of unsettling. Do you still experience anything paranormal in your house?

B
: Surprisingly, things have been calm lately. I’m not sure if whatever it was has moved on or if I’ve just gotten used to it.

A
: It’s good to hear that it’s calmed down. I’ve never had any paranormal experiences myself, but hearing stories like yours always pique my curiosity about the supernatural.

B
: It’s definitely a topic that sparks curiosity and makes you question the unknown. Some experiences can be quite unnerving, but they also make you realize that there’s more to this world than meets the eye.

A
: Absolutely. It’s fascinating how many unexplained phenomena are out there. Thanks for sharing your experiences with me!

B
: No problem! It’s always interesting to talk about these things with someone who’s open-minded. Who knows, maybe someday you’ll have your own paranormal encounter!

What’s up, dude?
¿Qué hay, tío?

Zonked significa muy cansado, hecho polvo.

Man, it’s a long day. I’m zonked.
Tío, ha sido un día muy largo. Estoy reventado.

Here’s the bracelet you want. — Sweet! Thanks.
Aquí tienes la pulsera que querías.  — ¡Genial! Gracias.

2. Modismos

Take a rain check (on something): aplazar o posponer algo; dejarlo para otro día

Do you want to come over tonight for food? — I’ll have to take a rain check on that, but what’s about next week?

Give the cold shoulder: ignorar a alguien, ningunear

What’s up with Lucy? Ive been getting the cold shoulder from her for a week.
¿Qué le pasa a Lucy? Lleva ignorándome una semana.

Spill the beans: soltar información, irse de la lengua

Come on. Spill the beans. What’s the big secret?
Venga. Escupe lo que sabes. ¿Cuál es ese gran secreto?

Go Dutch: pagar a medias, ir a pachas, ir a medias.

Let’s go Dutch on the food.
Pagamos a medias la comida.

3. Phrasal verbs

Find out: descubrir

I found out about her secret too late.
Descubrí su secreto demasiado tarde.

Get away: escapar, fugarse, escabullirse

He left the door open, and one of the hamsters got away.

Well, you could be right about that, but I think there could be another way.

Tuesday? Let me think. I could do at 10 am, but I need to double check that.

He’s 89. Actually, I might have been wrong. He could be 91.
Tiene 89 años. De hecho, puede que me esté equivocando. Podría tener 91.

5. Contracciones

I’ve got two hours left. (En vez de I have)
Me quedan dos horas.

He’ll call you. (en vez de he will)
Te llamará.

I’m gonna eat the cake. (going + to)
Me voy a comer la tarta.

If you wanna go, let’s go. (want + to)
Si quieres ir, vámonos.
