Hungry for some fire chicken? Or, are you craving delicious potato dirt with gravy on the side? While teaching about Thanksgiving (感恩节) in Shenzhen, I had many students tell me turkey was “fire chicken” and that mashed potatoes were “potato dirt!” Needless to say these kids had some creativity in trying to communicate to me since they were doing literal translations.
On the flip side, to make sure you guys know your Thanksgiving phrases in Chinese so you don’t have to get creative, we’ve got some must know vocabulary words & phrases to help when gobbling up that scrumptious food! Similar to how we had you covered for top phrases for Halloween, we’ve got the top 8 Thanksgiving phrases below.
1. 火鸡 (huǒ jī): turkey
“běi jīng shǒu jiè chī huǒ jī dàsài: shèng dàn jié chī kǎo huǒ jī, néng chī nǐ jiù lái”
“Beijing’s First Turkey Eating Contest: Christmas roasted turkey, if you can eat then come.”
2. 土豆泥 (tǔ dòu ní): mashed potatoes
“zuò tǔ dòu ní hěn fāng biàn”
“Making mashed potatoes is very easy. ”
3. 馅饼 (xiàn bǐng): pie
“dà jiā cháng yòng ‘tiān shàng diào xiàn bǐng’ lái bǐ yù rén yùn qì hǎo”
“Everyone often uses ‘opportunity falls into your lap’ (literally, pie falling from the sky) to describe lucky people”
4. 红薯 (hóng shǔ): sweet potatoes
“hóng shǔ shì rén rén ài chī de měi shí”
“The food everyone loves are sweet potatoes.”
5. 传统 (chuán tǒng): tradition
“zhè jiù shì chuán tǒng chǎn yè gǎi zào shēng jí de chéng guǒ”
“This is the result of upgrading traditional industries.”
6. 宴会 (yàn huì): feast; banquet
“guǎng zhōu mǎ lā sōng sài zǔ wěi huì jǔ xíng huān yíng yàn huì“
“The Guangzhou Marathon Committee held a welcoming banquet.”
7. 欢聚一堂 (huān jù yī táng): gather
“wǒ men dà jiā yòu huān jù yī táng“
“We all gathered together again.”
8. 狼吞虎咽 (láng tūn hǔ yàn): gobble
“tā chī qǐ fàn lái láng tūn hǔ yàn”
“When he eats, he gobbles.”
Now go eat some 火鸡，土豆泥 and 红薯. Don’t forget the 馅饼 though, with a nice big fat scoop (or scoops can’t hurt) of vanilla ice cream!
